He had planned it perfectly, right in conjunction with one of Pepper's efforts to continue her aide to mutantkind. She would be gone for at least another day or so by his calculations, which was more than enough time to meet up with Janet without her knowing about it. And really, even if she did somehow find out he was not all that concerned. It was no secret that Janet was one of his oldest friends, and besides that, they both had their own Avengers teams to run. Which meant that they could literally be meeting to talk about anything.
Though somehow he doubted anyone would ever be able to guess what the particular topic of conversation would be.
He had teased it to Janet, ever since contacting her. And on the way to the restaurant. All through the appetizer, and most of the main course. It was partially just his nature, to lead her on and let her wonder. But there was another part of him that was still considering whether or not he really wanted to share his thoughts with her and seek an opinion. Because until he did he still had an exit strategy, but once he opened his mouth all bets would be off. There would be no going back. No pretending that he had not said the words. No means with which to hide his real feelings.
In a way he almost felt like he was telling this to Pepper. Only without the whole until death do us part bit. And all the rest.
Tony took a long sip of his Johnnie Walker Black, set the glass on the table, and peered across at Janet. The words flowed out of him.
"I want to ask Pepper to marry me."
He took another drink. Longer this time.
"...But I also do not want to irrevocably screw up her life anymore than I already have, and I needed to hear your thoughts. Your counsel. Hell, I mean. You did it, right? And not that long ago we were much more alike than we are now. I just. I want to know how you did it."
