It has been nine years since the Brotherhood of Mutants tried to kill a good portion of the world's leaders in 2000. Since that event, the world has changed. Commissioned by the United States government, the X-Men fulfill a function that many consider a paramilitary position. When a threat too big for the U.S. military rises up, the X-Men are called in to take care of the problem. The school itself went public as a mutant school in 2004.

The X-Men haven't been the only ones evolving and changing as the need for them becomes more prominent. Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., has started to gather a group of superpowered beings to form a government sponsored team, one that will hopefully replace the X-Men so the government will not have to rely on them any longer.

There are many people out there that don't want peace between humans and everyone else. While the Brotherhood has disbanded, other terrorist groups like the Morlocks, the Marauders, and the Mutant Liberation Front have risen up to take their place.
