J.J. bent over his desk, looking down ont he dozens of newspapers and tabloids that lay there. He snarled, grinding his cigar between his teeth as his fists clenched tight. He pounded the desk with his fist and stood up, yanking the cigar from his mouth and bellowing to the pair of Daily Bugle employees cowering in a corner and Betty Brant, who flinched as he suddenly shouted.
"The Times! Globe! Reporter! People Magazine for christ sake! Those half-wit hacks got the real story and we're left splashing in the deep end!? What the hell I pay you people for!? Don't they teach fact checking in newspaper school these days!"
"Sir I-" stammered one of the men.
"Oh cram it, Hoffman!" J.J. bellowed back, throwing a copy of the New York Times at him. "We have a three page write up on how that bug-bastard Spider-Man was at the scene of the crime at a bank robbery! Eye witnesses claim he was somewhere else entirely! Tell me, Hoffman, hows that work out, huh? Are there two Spider-Mans now!? Doesn't seem like it! Now we've got Spider-Man spotted somewhere else tripping up the bad guys! We look like a damn joke! Give me three good reasons I shouldn't fire your ass right now, Hoffman, GO!"
"Uh, but sir I-"
"Tick tock, Hoffman!" J.J. snarled, tapping his watch. Hoffman quickly began to count on his fingers.
"Uh-One! You don't have a back-up features editor. Er..um-Two! You don't know your own pin number. Only Betty and I do."
"Not good enough! One more shot!"
"Uh-uh-uh! Three! The story was Brock's! He took the pictures, he wrote it up! Hell, the guy was even there at the crime scene!"
J.J. snarled, gnashing the cigar with his teeth and stroking his chin for a second. He turned sharply on his heel, causing all to flinch aside from Miss Brant. He yanked the cigar from his mouth and snatched up a copy of the Bugle proudly displaying the false story on page one. He crumpled the issue in his hand, throwing it in the garbage and pointing a finger to the gaggle of cowardly reporters.
"Get Brock's ass in here! PRONTO!"
