It looks like we're going to be penpals. I've never really had a penpal before, but it seems like kind of a cool way to get to know people. Especially when there are so many people here, and it'd be hard to meet everyone face to face.
So anyway, my name is Mako Nakarai, but my friends mostly call me Nakama. It doesn't really have any special meaning for me, it's just a play on my name: Nakarai Mako. I got it at this nature school I was at last summer, where we were all encouraged to come up with nicknames for one another as a kind of bonding thing. I don't know if it worked, but I'd never had a nickname before, so I thought it was cool. There's actually someone here who was at the same school. You know Jun Ushiro, right? We weren't close or anything, but it helped when I first showed up, to have a familiar face here. He didn't have a special nickname, though, we just called him Ushiro. He probably thought the whole thing was dumb.
I'm from [city unnamed in canon], Japan. I was in Grade 7 at school, and I also had an after-school job doing seamstress work. I don't know if you and Ushiro have talked about what else we were doing before we got here, but it's kind of a long story, so maybe I'll tell you about it another time.
I got a pet on my second day here, a sort of pigeon called Miko. She's really cool, and I'm pretty sure she's from another world, because she talks a little and seems to understand when I talk to her. I've always wanted a pet, but my mom and I both worked so much that we didn't really have time for one back home. It's nice that we can have pets here, isn't it? Do you have one? I'm going to be working with the Defense Force, too, doing civilian work. Suzaku told me about it on my first day, do you know him? He's really nice.
That's probably enough for a first letter. I hope you'll write back and tell me about yourself.
- Nakama
[Written a bit more messily, in a different colour of pen:]
ps: I wrote this before we met, so some of this you already know, but I didn't have the chance to rewrite it. Sorry about that.
