Sorry about that. It's better than demonstrating what happens if I phase through you now. It's strange telling myself to stay solid all the time. [She reaches out to touch him. It's just an absent gesture. It drives home the point, "solid" which wasn't really so hard to get in the first place, right?
But it's suddenly more than that as a memory surfaces in her mind becoming strangely vivid for a moment.
She's younger—thirteen—and it's completely dark all around her. She had phased herself into a wall. Her heart was hammering away in her chest and she was so afraid they would find her. It scared her more than the fear she'd accidentally turn solid again in this wall. She didn't have full control yet. But she could feel herself growing weak from the effort of staying phased. She needed to turn solid again, but they might be out there.
A moment passes. Then another. She has to try. She steps out and for a second it's clear. She can get away, but it is only a second. They were watching.
A man reaches out with long, stretchy arms that coil tightly around her. "It's the mutant we picked up on the scanner. Don't worry, kid. We killed all these useless flatscans. And next time you can join us."]
