I will attempt to answer your question, if you don't mind --
I hear that you are more inclined towards the Judeo-Christian beliefs -- it is of course better to start with something you are familiar with. Sharing of the most popular stories then drawing an exposition as to how these teachings are reflected in the society at the time they were written would be most interesting, I find. These would enable students to draw parallels into their own cultures and share what they have lived with.
I am not aware of the religious practices of other worlds, but I find that scriptures share common themes -- Creation of worlds, the birth of Man, destruction, the promise of a savior, the end of times and guidelines on how to live a virtuous life, to mention a few.
