Four hundred years prior to the time I hail from, a unified world was indeed an impossible dream. But of course, change did not happen overnight: the North, Central and South Americas became one as the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations; Asia, Australia and Russia became part of the Human Reform League, and the continent you know as Europe became the Advance European Union.
The unified states saw the benefit of having more economic power and smoother political rapport. War, however, still raged and there is only so much strife and bloodshed that centuries of human history can handle. It was... almost quite "natural," and only a matter of time, I daresay, that the world rallies under one flag.
