[ it's almost four a.m. before he's really worried, is the sad part. but he knows Lelouch doesn't get much sleep on the best of days, so two a.m. -- three a.m. -- those were passable. it's only four a.m. that crosses over the line. even Lelouch's scanty three hours of sleep is threatened at that point.
so he finally tries to raise Lelouch on the communicator, bracing himself for a verbal lashing (what are you still doing up, you idiot or I thought you said you'd see me in the morning!), and... gets no response.
at first he's just exasperated. too much to promise after all? ...but then he realizes that the channel is open -- Lelouch's communicator isn't off. there's just... no response.
and that provokes a different reaction. switching channels tersely, tensely ]
