Placing value in the lives of those who are younger is practical for the posterity of a civilization. If one encourages young people to fight and thus die, they will die before they can reproduce. The civilization will be nonexistent within a few short generations.
It is foolish for one to consider all lives equal when one should instead weigh the risks.
