Helped a lit'le old lady across the road, too. You know me, only good deeds. [ Yeah, it's probably for the best if they don't dig too deep into what he did back then, or indeed talk about the many times he's made a break for it in broad daylight with nothing but a blanket or his coat to keep him safe from the sun.

So many times. He's pretty sure Ianto's witnessed it once or twice, back in Squall prison, even if they weren't exactly friendly back then. ]

Always the Boy Scout. [It's a good day to keep it light. And he may have observed some distant flames at Squall. Just a normal vampire day.]

I assume you remember what a menu is, even robot waiters are a bit new?

[ Oh, he quirks a brow at that - excuse you? ]

You know I've been in this fishbowl for about as long as you have, right? [ Robot waiters are not new. ] And I know how restaurants work. Bet I've been to more than you've seen in your life.

[ Whipper-snapper. He takes the menu, perusing it carefully. He never got to pick his last meal, you know. ]

If you say so. Wouldn't want you to be overwhelmed. [Complete with that innocent, helpful, hiding a smirk face hat is his speciality.]

Watch it. [ He gives Ianto a glance over the menu before turning his attention back to it, scanning for things that sound good or familiar and eventually giving up with a, for once, entirely real sigh. ]

Fine, I give up. What's good?

[That sigh is adorable and he loves it. It's also funny being in a restaurant and getting food with him. It's such a normal couple thing to do but today it feels exotic and exciting.]

Hard to go wrong with pancakes. Which I assume had not been invented last time you had breakfast.

Oi, don't start. What else would I have eaten on Shrove Tuesday? [ Pancakes are eternal, apparently. ]

Now, the American abominations... that I can't say that I've eaten.

Am I about to get a Victorian history lesson from you? [Something he actually gets very few of if they're honest. And it's a day for new experiences so he orders pancakes for both of them from the patiently waiting bot before Spike has a chance to object.]

Right. Abominations it is then.

We invented the cupcake, you know. [ Like he'd object on a day like today. Also, if there was ever a good day to lure genuine Victorian factoids out of him today is that day - he's feeling incredibly nostalgic for obvious reasons. ]

I did not know that. [Since it seems like he can get away with asking questions he's going to. It's a habit he picked up with Jack who is always so secretive. He got used to asking any questions he could in the rare moments he was clearly open to it early on.] Is there anything you miss about that time?

[ To be fair, it's not like Spike would've objected to question asking on a normal day. There's just a greater chance he'll give an honest response today. ]

No. [ He snorts. ] Whatever Jack thinks, that time never sat well with me.

You know I've never actually asked him what he thinks about you in that respect. [Sometimes he does tsk about things besides you believe it or not.] I suppose I'm curious about how much you changed after you were turned. How much of it had to do with losing your soul and how much was just you waiting for an excuse to act a different way.

[ It's been awhile, but Jack sure had a lot of fun claiming Spike was too stuck up and Victorian, too prudish just because he wasn't interested in shagging him. So much for that.

The question brings him pause but honestly, they're so past the point where he's cagey about who he was pre-siring. Why not put the cards on the table? ]

Got a feeling I was looking for a way out and losing my soul was the easiest way to do it. [ He idly plays with a sugar packet on the table, needing to keep busy. ] I was pretty well off, you know. Not wealthy, but... middle class. Had certain expectations on me.

I've always wondered how much of what we think about society back then is true and how much is just usnlooking down on it for how different things are today. [He's taking every word in, because this is about someone he loves and he wants to know everything he can, what he thinks and what shaped who he is as a person.] So all this, the attitude and everything was hiding under there somehweee and you would never have had an opportunity to let it out?

[ He's no historian but he's guessing there's something to what Ianto's saying. You only get a limited view of it, after all. Not a lot of illiterate dockers writing books, are there? ]

Don't know about that. [ He frowns a bit, thinking about things he's never really seen the point in thinking about. ] Pretty sure I would've blown up sooner or later, even if Dru hadn't come along. Dying was a mercy, to tell you the truth.

[He can believe it. Even though he knows a lot of the attitude is an act with Spike most of it is just who he is. He must have been miserable, stifling all that.] You really hated it that much?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]chipswiththat
2017-08-09 06:48 pm UTC (link)
Oh yeah. I hated it all right. [ It was torture, before he knew what torture really was. He was aching with pent up frustrations that he didn't know what to do with and then Dru introduced him to fire and bloodshed and the therapeutical qualities of railroad spikes. ]

Don't really think I had any other way out of it, either.

[Does Ianto actually know where his name comes from? He may not. Not that it's good breakfast conversation since pancakes are here.]

Do you think you would have just tried to live with it? Or would you have found some other way to escape?

[ He's mentioned it a few times but who can even tell at this point? They've been through so much, talked about so many things, it's easy to lose track. ]

...I don't know. [ He sighs, prodding the pancake thoughtfully. ] Too much of a coward to off myself, too pathetic to trick anyone into marrying me. Really don't see how that could've ever ended well.

[ Failed poet isn't really an attractive feature in a potential husband. ]

[Hey now, he got engaged to him, failed poet and all! ... Sort of.]

When Drusilla sired you, it was consentual? Not just some random vampire attack?

[ Oh, that would go over so well in the fancy parlours. Marrying a Welshman. ]

It's- more complicated than that. [ He prods the pancake again, cutting off a piece with his fork. ] Nothing random about it, she picked me and I wasn't exactly fighting it tooth and nail. But... if you'd met her, you'd understand. She's hard to say no to.

I don't regret it. That's what matters, I think.

[Oh yes good to know it's the nationality that's the problem. Don't act like your mom wouldn't love him Spike.

He takes a bite of his own food, listening curiously as he chews.]

I'm glad you don't regret it. I'd like to say I'd still love you if you were mortal but being a vampire is such a part of who you are. You'd be an entirely different person if you had turned up here before you changed and frankly I like who you are.

[ She probably would, because she's the best and it's not like she had any shot at getting grandkids either way. ]

It's the not-breathing thing, isn't it? Pervert. [ He teases, before going back to the well-trodded self-deprecating route. ] Probably as well. I don't think you would've liked me much before all that.

[Sounds about right. Also don't act like he wouldn't make an excellent housewife we all know he would.]

Oh yes, I love you entirely for your vampire sexual prowess. [It's a familiar routine and he likes it because let's face it there are a lot of sexy benefits to the vampire thing.] Let's see. Did you still enjoy poetry? I like that about you so we'd be alright on that count.

[ Finally he takes a bite out of the pancake, which tastes fine but isn't the flavor explosion he expected it to be. Huh. Must taste more things while he still can. ]

Oh yeah. [ He snorts, too worn down from all this emotional support to even worry about keeping up appearances anymore. ] That was pretty much all I did. Fancied myself a poet. I was bloody awful at it too.
