Day 428 - Open Action
Morning

Ice cream for breakfast was perfectly okay. Mal's not paying much attention to the ice cream though. Sure he's eating it, but mostly he's standing across from the entrance to sector 6, staring intently at the door.

Late morning - Early afternoon

Mal was a flurry of activity. He didn't plan to be gone long - only a few hours - but he did need decent supplies. Water for one. A small bag of supplies he could stash somewhere in sector 6 for later. And of course his trusty pitchfork from the stable. Once he had everything he needed, Mal walked purposefully to sector 6.

Evening

Mal emerges from Sector 6 tired and filthy. The food carts aren't giving him anything he really wants, so he makes his way wearily to Sector 4 for something good. He sat at one of the restaurants, pitchfork leaning against the wall next to his table, while he demolished a burger with relish.

Mal gives Aidan's backpack a look as he hands him the extra pitchfork.

"I ain't carryin' that for you if it gets too heavy." Mostly he's joking. Mostly.

He gives Aidan another smile before turning towards the door. "Ready?"

"This? This ain't heavy. This is nothin'."

He's a farmer boy, he can carry his own shit for sure. He does grin, hoisting the backpack up to sit properly.

"Ready. Let's head in there."

Mal walks to the door, though he stops as it opens and humid air puffs out at him. He takes a breath. Will it be what he remembers? Or was that all false? It was twenty years after all. No one can perfectly remember twenty years. Particularly when those twenty years were a false memory placed for the wardens' pleasure.

He steps forward and nods. Yes. He remembers this place.

"Thinking the forest today. Watch out for the giant pill bugs. And pay attention. It's a bit twisty turny."

"I'll follow your lead, Captain."

And he will, carefully, attention sweeping across their surroundings the way someone would if you're either a) paranoid b) has some military experience or c) all of the above. Despite the treacherous underbrush, Aidan is moving in step comfortably. He grew up close to the woods. This is practically his backyard, ignoring the huge deadly creepy crawlies of course.

Mal takes them into the forest. After a good half hour or so of climbing over roots and avoiding pill bugs, he stops, hands on his hips, and regards a tree.

"Did you ever come to my treehouse in the future?" he asks, still looking over the tree.

"Dunno." Aidan responds, truthfully, squinting at the tree in an effort to jostle a memory out.

"If I did, I sure don't remember it now."

"No? Well that's where she'll be. Good tree for it. If I ever get around to building one again. Or... you know what I mean. High enough that none of the real problem creatures can get me."

He looks at the tree again trying to remember when he'd ended up building the thing that in reality had never happened.

"'s a good place for it." He takes a moment to look at the tree, though he's not entirely sure what he's hoping will happen here. Jog his future memory?

"You gonna start buildin' it?"

He's going to be so mad when Sector 6 closes...

"Yeah... I think so. Might be good to be busy with somethin' you know? Not much else to do. An' there's somethin' to be said for the adrenaline rush you get bein' in here too."

"You want any help?"

Because he can feel that need to keep busy, to do something that isn't just hanging out and having a good time and waiting for something to happen. As much as he hates it, he too has an adrenaline itch to scratch.

Mal smiles. "Sure. Wouldn't mind a partner."

He's starting to get all sorts of ideas. "We need to start getting supplies. Tools, at last what we can find. Or make. Or maybe we could see if the kangaroo people'l talk to us..."

Mal starts talking a mile a minute as he thinks outloud about the whole thing.

He nods along but is immediately distracted when the kangaroo people is mentioned. Really hasn't spent all that much time in here, for obvious reasons, so this is all kinds of new and adventurous and exciting.

"You ever see 'em? Th' kangaroo folks?"

"Tended to stay outta their way. Wasn't sure about 'em so it felt better to just stay away." Maybe watched them from afar.

"Probably a good idea, if we can't talk to 'em. A shame, really... it'd be kind of cool to hear how they feel about this."

Different perspectives and all.

Good to fade it here?

Mal nods. "Right. So how about we look for lumber. Seems a good enough start. Pile it up here for now and we can come back when we get some tools."

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Absolutely!

"Sounds good."

He'll wrestle out of the backpack, hanging it up on a tree so creepy crawlies can't get to it, before spending a couple of back-breaking hours gathering lumber alongside his Captain.
