Day 424 | Video | Action
[Video]

[He didn't think that breaking time was in the penal code, but then considering what the Dominator's had come to earth for he's not exactly surprised to find himself here. The more pressing question was the absence of the rest of the legends. If he was going to make contact with the other inmates, he might as well get that out of the way.]

Hello, people of Marina. I hope this finds you well, assuming this is a recording and not a live communication channel. I guess I'll find out in a second or two if anyone is watching.

[He's defaulting to a slightly more professional way of composing his speech, trying to be as clear as possible as he would in any board meaning or in front of his students back in the 50s. Just going for efficiency. Plus it helps mask his panic.]

I'm Ray. Ray Palmer. And I'm looking for my friends. Sara, Nate, Mick, Amaya, Martin and Jackson. Has anyone seen them? Heard those names? I mean of course I am leaving out specific details such as appearance, surnames, distinguishing characteristics, I'm assuming if they're here they'd receive this message and find me.

Otherwise I think I'm going to need more information about this place. Hopefully I can assist with an escape plan? There's one of those, right?

[His lips turn up into a genuine smile, but it fades almost immediately, seeming crestfallen. He turns the feed off with that.]

[Action]

Ray stays in Sector one for a while, processing everything that had happened. He'd been here almost immediately after he and the Legends crash landed in L.A. due to a time storm. Sure enough that was listed as one of his crimes. Others remarked on his using underhanded tactics to acquire Queen Consolidated, and his being regarded as a criminal by the Time Masters. Even the time he nearly blew up the chem lab in his undergrad, it was all stacked against him as supposed crimes. Alien law, he supposed, was maybe a little less nuanced than even the flawed justice system of western society. At east there you were innocent until proven guilty.

Here he didn't even get a trial.

He moved on to sector two, finding a clothing store and opting to change before continuing on to explore the city.

[Another flash of teeth.] No idea - I'm not much of a fantasy fan. His name's Spike, if that helps at all? You can look him up while you're here and check that thing off your list, at least!

And you're a time-traveller too? Believe it or not, that's so far been rarer than being a vampire, here!

Not off hand. [He didn't quite fall into the grasp of Joss Whedon's magnum opus given he was just climbing free from the shackles of high school to the call of early college. His vampire fiction references were sorely lacking other than the fact he was aware of both Interview with a Vampire and how notably bad Twilight was supposedly.]

That I will have to do. And yeah, me and my team are basically tasked with protecting the timeline. I can't say much to that, as far as the vampire to time traveler ratio.

[That gets his attention all right.]

Seriously? Not anything to do with the Time Agency, are you? [A beat.] Or the Time Lords, I guess?

Nope, and I wish. [Seriously, he has a scarf and a Tardis lunch box from the 80s.]

We had something called the Time Masters but they weren't exactly the good guys.

Me and the other Legends do their job now that they're gone.

So does that mean you're not exactly the good guys either? [With a faintly amused look, followed by a shrug.] I mean, not that either the Time Agency or the Time Lords were always the good guys either, so I'm not judging. Just curious. Especially since you appear to have heard of them...?

Well, seeing as multiverse theory is an established fact there may have been a chance I have intercepted some broadcasts regarding Time Lords. Specifically about one in a blue Police Box.

[He's trying to be so discrete here Jack! He's being a good boy!]

The time masters were definitely... I don't know if I would say evil but utilitarian to a fault. To the point that they were going to allow a mad man rise to power just to prevent a future disaster. Maybe that future disaster was worse than Savage, but the circumstances involved meant we had to take the Time Masters down.

And that's one of the main reasons I've been brought here.

Ah. I see. [A quick flash of a grin.] Well, you don't want to believe everything you see on the television, but it might interest you to know that that particular Time Lord has turned up here, in more than one regeneration. The last time wasn't even that long ago, actually - shame you missed him!

...And if you mean your main 'crime' was trying to protect the world, or the timeline or whatever, you'll find yourself in pretty good company here. [A wry smile.] There's a lot of us in what might be called the 'hero' trade here.

You have any idea how awesome that would be to meet even one version of him? [He is fanboying here, man. Can't even hide it. Or contain it anymore. This is a grown ass man nerding out over Dr Who here.]

I mean, heck, I met Einstein, King Arthur and President Washington and I'd still pick The Doctor out of all of them to meet.

Of course they say never meet your heroes, don't they? Probably not a good idea.

Yeah. Crime. With air quotes. Lots of air quotes. [He air quotes to emphasis the air quoting.]

Herotrade, huh? Sounds like what would happen if a bunch of superheroes went corporate.

[He grins, because hey, he's a Doctor fan too. Over a century waiting to meet him again and all that.] Well, I'm sorry you missed him. I expect he'll turn up again sooner or later, though. He's popped in three or four times since I've been here, although each time he hasn't remembered his previous - or one case, future - visits.

[And he's only a little bit jealous that Ray is fanboying the Doctor and not him. He's mostly assuming that, like Reid, Ray hasn't seen whatever portion of the show he was in.

He laughs easily at the herotrade comment.]

Yeah, perhaps trade was the wrong word. But you can't deny it, most of us here are far more of the hero variety than the super-villain type. It's almost as if someone were trying to rid the universe of all the good guys so they can take it over themselves with minimum resistance...

[Oh no, he has. It's just it doesn't quite look the same.]

So...Did the future Doctor wear a bowtie or go more with the stage magician look?

[Jack, he knows everything. Every episode. Still haven't seen Sarah Jane adventures.]

You're aware that Doctor Who is a TV show in certain alternate realities?

[He chuckles softly.] Is that the case?

Well they just added the ATOM to their roster. Without my suit, unfortunately.

Bowtie. [Dark eyebrows arch curiously.] Stage magician? Really? That's a bit of a departure from the norm! Although I suppose his third incarnation wasn't that far off it. [He grins.] And yeah, I'm aware. Seems that quite a few of us are on TV in various realities.

So what's the ATOM? That's a new one to me!

It's an interesting aesthetic. And really? Statistically that means we're all fictional in some world. Wonder how that works? Are you the product of fiction or is the fiction the product of you?

I really like to think it's the latter. [So facinated. His bright eyes and easy smile show how invested he is in this conversation.]

So uh, has anyone spoiled anything for you? Like big life events or future happenings?

And the ATOM is my exo-suit. I made it out of a dwarf star alloy, and incidentally, it allows me to shrink to the size of an atom. Theoretically anyway. I haven't tried smaller than an insect-- a small insect sure, but. Not really interested in blowing myself up again.

Well, clearly, we came first and lived such wonderful stories that someone somewhere had to write them down! [He considers, head on one side.] Perhaps a story that big kind of echoes between dimensions, and people pick up on it and re-enact it?

[He's heard stranger things.]

No spoilers so far for me - unless I really do turn out to be this Malcolm Merlyn guy. But to be fair, there aren't many people here from later than the time I came from myself - and no-one so far has recognised me from TV. The Doctor, sure, but not me. Perhaps I just haven't made as much impact as he has, yet!

And shrinking to the size of an atom sounds completely impossible, but then so did being able to come back from death until it happened. I'd love to see it!

That's entirely possible, and probably the more likely of the two. You'd have to ask which fictions count towards that theory.

And I suppose you'd prefer to be spoiler free as well? [Because there was the big one.]

That might be because Doctor Who is a lot more main stream then the show you ended up on. Oh my god this is surreal. Can you even imagine?

And I'd be happy to show you. And yes, I remember when that happened. Was even more interesting when you showed up again. And now you know how I spent my college years.

You mean I did get own show, at least in your reality? [Ridiculously excited, for a grown man.

And then, as his brain works through it:]
So how come you didn't recognise me as myself then?

[Leaving the spoilers question for a moment, though he'll come back to it. The last time he woke up here, it was after spilling his blood into the Miracle and fearing it was going to be his last death. He'd love to know if there was any more after that.]

Yeah, Torchwood. Which is a clever anagram of Dr Who.

[That's a puzzler right there, because why wouldn't Jack look the same?]

Well they did have to find an actor to portray you. You look similar, but I just see a younger Malcolm. It might take a while to unsee that.

Doctor Who? What's that? The name of the Doctor's show? Shouldn't it be that that's an anagram of Torchwood? Torchwood's been around since 1879, after all!

And yeah, I guess that kind of makes sense. Is he as pretty me, though? [With a wink]

That's right. Except that Doctor Who was on the air since the 60s and the Torchwood story was first mentioned in a 2006 episode. Werewolves in England, second series of the reboot. Maybe not the best episode but hey its Doctor Who, theres really no terrible episode. [Okay there might be alot of bad episodes but he's just talking up his show.]

Oooh, well, he likes to think so. He has about the same face shape but the features are all wrong.

[He blinks a bit. Sure, he's used to time-travel, but this is even more mind-boggling.] Wow. There is so much I would love to ask you, because this is so fascinating, but right now I've just gotta ask: I got a memory update a while ago, and woke up right after having died from spilling all my blood into the Blessing. On your show, did that actually happen?

[A beat.] And did I wake up again?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[He winces.]You're gonna hate this... But I didn't actually finish watching Torchwood.

[Talk about awkward. He sorta got busy between his phds and building a billion dollar tech company.]

I'm sorry I can't give you an answer to that. Because that sounds important.

[Jack's face is something of a picture as his brief hopes of finding out if his memory update was real and he really is dead now are dashed. Only to be resurrected again, as he himself is so good at doing. He lets out a breath.]

Well, that's something, I guess. A good something. [He swallows, as it settles in. He's not finally dead. At least as long as a television show in an alternative reality can be relied upon as evidence.]

Thanks. That's pretty good to hear.

[He's going to ommit the details regarding the true nature of 'the face of Boe', but suffice to say Jack did go on to do man interesting things if that story wasn't just an abandoned plot thread.]

I'm getting the sense you're disappointed. Or, relieved? I can't tell, this head set screen is depressingly small.

[Yeah, he's probably not quite ready to hear that he might end up as a giant head in a jar. Martha's been very good at keeping that quiet so far too.]

It's a relief to know that I'm not dead. A massive relief! It's just... there's been a lot of speculation as to whether the new memories they upload us with are actually real or just fiction. For a moment there I hoped I might find out one way or the other.

[Yeah, there's just strong implications that Jack Harkness moves on to greatness.]

Sorry I couldn't help you. I'm still trying to figure it out myself now. I could be be on TV right now. Or steaming on the internet.

Maybe even a cartoon.
