Day 415 - action & video - open
Action

[He hadn't been in the dome long, but Keith discovered the athletic center.

It really hadn't been hard. Having spent the last couple of years of his life attempting to learn alien technology that didn't have the luxury of instructions in his own language, learning Marina's technology had been a breeze. So finding anything in the dome that was marked on the network map was simple.

Of course, the whole reason he was there in the first place was because using physical exertion to deal with his issues was something familiar. He didn't have his Bayard. He didn't have his mother's knife. He just had him. He could work with that in this type of gym setting, as it didn't look like there were any battle drones to work against, but it was the lack of those items which gave him one of his many reasons to be down here.

Also, after using drone gladiators to practice against in a training simulator, a punching bag, he found, just wasn't as satisfying.

He did it anyway, though, the rhythmic sounds of his strikes against the punching bag allowing him to let his mind wander. It kept circling back to a few main points. He wanted his mother's knife- his knife. He missed Red's presence in his mind. He needed to get out. And every time his thoughts came back to those points, he got angrier, hitting the bag harder and faster, blindly striking out as he tried to expel and exhaust the rage out of himself.

That was fine until he heard someone enter behind him. He took a second to look, but it was just long enough for the bag to swing back fast from one of his harder hits and knock him flat on his ass.]

Oof-

[Okay, he could take a hint. It was probably time to try something else.]

=====

Video

[Keith wasn't a great conversationalist, so poking around on the network was sort of more for gathering information than actually initiating a chat with someone. He didn't know any of these people. But, still, the fatalistic attitude of "we've accepted our lives here" that a good number of them seemed to be showing sort of bothered him a little. That made his line of questions seem almost pointless. This place was on Day 400+. Surely someone had tried getting out, right?

He frowned a bit. Pidge was the hacker. She'd have better luck at seeing if hacking their way out of this simulation was even possible. Keith was definitely not a hacker. He decided to ask anyway, but he had a bad feeling on what the answers were going to be.]

Uh, hi. I'm Keith. I'm a Paladin of Voltron. [Still getting used to that, even after this long...]

I was just wondering... has anyone tried getting out, yet? I mean, I would think someone probably has, but I was wondering what happened when it was tried. Consider it research.

[If someone looked close enough, they might see the beginnings of what looked like one of those boards used by criminal investigators to source crime patterns.]

[Trowa was silent for a moment. If Keith were paying attention, he was periodically tapping a finger on the punching bag he was still holding. The gears were turning, being a mechanic himself and having helped to build his own Gundam. He'd also been around actual lions enough to know their general proportions. Finally he spoke]

That's a big lion.

[Granted without more of a scale, he could still be off]

The cockpits in a Gundam are mounted in the chest and two might be able to fit inside one of them. Five would be impossible.

The Gundams still sound larger than anything we've got on Earth. The Lions are really advanced compared to what humans have done. Altea was a highly advanced race, especially considering that the Lions and the Castle we use as a base are over ten thousand years old.

If things had been different, I wonder how advanced they'd be now.

[His voice got a little quiet for a moment. After all, after Allura and Coran were put in cryostasis and the Lions put in hiding, the Alteans had essentially been wiped out. He could only imagine what ten thousand years would have done for them technology-wise.]

That seems to be the case for a lot of worlds. There's some that are very advanced, some that aren't, and then others between.

Ten thousand years? And they are still operating?

[That seemed like it was outside normal lifespan for a robot]

[Keith shrugged.]

I mean, the Castle's parts are really hard to find when it gets damaged because of the age, but, yeah. For the most part, it all seems to work. The Castle, the Lions. And they've been sitting for most of that time. The Castle was actually already pretty old. Coran mentioned working on some of the systems with his grandfather when he was a kid.

That would make it hard to find parts for them. Too bad this place makes it impossible to actually see the machines that we use. Sounds like the castle and the lions would be interesting.

Yeah. I'd like to have Red here.

[He rubbed the back of his head.]

I got used to having her around. It's weird without her now.

Unfortunately anything considered a weapon is not allowed except for certain exceptions. But something as large as Gundam would not be allowed. A tiny version, perhaps.

The lions talk to you?

Kind of. It's not really actual words or speech. It's more like feelings or ideas... impressions that are just kind of fed right into our brains. There's like a presence there. It was weird at first, but I guess I got used to it enough that now it's weird not having it.

[Not that it was a constant thing, but knowing that, when he was close enough to her, he could just reach out and get a response had gotten comforting. It was also nice to know she'd come for him when he needed her, but he didn't have that here, either. It was a sobering thought.]

Interesting... sounds similar in concept to how I can understand animals if I had to describe it.

[Keith looked a little surprised.]

You can understand animals?

I can. I worked with the animals at the circus and I was able to understand the animals there. One of the circus's lions was a friend of mine.

[Irony~]

Is that something a lot of people where you're from can do?

I'm the only one as far as I am aware. There may be someone else out there in my world who can do that, but I've never met them.

Yeah. That kind of thing isn't really standard for humans were I'm from, either. But I did meet a race that can communicate with a planetoid being. They're like living rocks. They place their hand on the surface, and the living planet they're on can communicate with them.

Actually, I think the Altean princess can do it, too, but, for her, it seems to be something special, since Coran can't do it. I think it has to do with the rejuvenation ceremony that Alteans do when they take crystals from the planetoid.

Living rock... that sounds interesting. So it was a giant creature that was planet? Your princess could talk to it too? I wonder how two different species could talk to the same planetoid the same way. Were the two races similar at all?

[info]tempredmental

Yeah. We're not really sure about that, either, but apparently, certain Alteans were capable of connecting to the Balmera to replenish the quintessence used when it gives up a crystal. Several races use the Balmera crystals to power their equipment, but the Galra Empire was just taking the crystals, and we actually had to save one of them from dying. Allura was able to do that somehow. I think she's part of the special bloodline or something because she's royalty.

As for the other race, they're kind of like rock people, too? And they support the Balmera? It's kind of like they help the Balmera and it helps them.

Huh... sounds like you've met some very interesting races. So the... Balmera was it? Communicates with a modified version of telepathy?

And the Balmera grows the crystals?

[info]tempredmental

I think so. Though, I think one of the Balmerans, the people who live on the Balmera, said it was more like a vibration through the rock. I mean, it's living rock, but it is still pretty much like rock.

[He nodded.]

They come in different sizes, and the Castle uses it for power because they give off a lot of energy. There's a whole process to extracting one, and it actually costs the Balmera energy to give one up. That's why the Alteans developed a rejuvenation process to replenish that energy. Taking too much of the crystal without replenishing the energy will eventually kill the Balmera.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]sendin_theclown

Vibrations through the rock? So whatever they are thinking travels through the rock?

[Wow... mind... blown!]

It's a shame that something like that would hurt the Balmera. Though... if it requires its own energy to make it then it is essentially an energy store and to pull it means it has to make more.

[He's trying way too hard to figure rationalize that... Might be better to put a stop to him doing that]

[info]tempredmental

Yeah. I think that's how it works. Apparently, Allura's able to do it, too. I think it has to do with her quintessence or something. [Keith shrugged a little. He didn't understand it more than that.]

Exactly. That's why the Alteans developed a way to help replenish the energy when they would take a crystal. However, the Galra didn't do that, and they almost killed one off as a result. There might be others that they did actually kill off that we didn't know about, but we were able to save one from them before it died.

[Nope... he was just... going to keep explaining until Trowa seemed satisfied with understanding.]

[Well, that's good because Trowa does actually understand it now and nods]

I think I understand.

I have never seen anything like that what time we were in space fighting so the most I can definitively say is that they are not near Earth in my world, but based one what you've said, we'd probably know it was there. We just mine for materials on satellites.

Yeah. We hadn't seen one before, either. I don't think they get close to Earth's sector back home for me, either.

Yeah. I think it was pretty far from other stuff, but it did orbit a star. It supports a whole race of rock people, after all. So, it seems to keep itself where life can be sustained for them.

Well, that part would seem true if it wants to help them, but avoiding areas with asteroids would seem likely as well. Less it has to deal with in the long run.
