Day 407 / Action / Open and closed
Action – closed to Ianto

He's finishing getting dressed and bending to get his boots out of the wardrobe, when the sight of something at the back of the wardrobe, sitting innocuously right behind his boots where he'd swear it wasn't yesterday, gives him pause. A box. A box he had for decades. A box which couldn't possibly be here if this existence wasn't virtual and/or outside of time.

Hardly breathing, he scoops it up and takes it through to Ianto, who's already in the kitchen, getting coffee.

"Hey. Look what I found!"

Action – open

Jack's gift is a box of photographs of past lives and lovers, incredibly precious since it was blown up along with him and the rest of the Hub over a year ago and (in real life, at least) lost forever.

Find him sifting through the photos, or just gazing fondly at one of them, at various points through the day – at the Defence Force HQ, in a restaurant at lunchtime or dinner time, wandering along with a coffee in his hand etc. etc. etc.

((OOC: NSFW content in the thread with Ianto (surprise surprise)! ))

[He turned at the sound of his name, wakened from his reverie, and smiled at the sight of Kirk there, his eyes widening when he saw the photograph in his hand.]

Hey, thanks. That's - well, it's irreplaceable.

Can I ask who it's of?

[ He hadn't gotten a good look, but enough of a glance to know there were people in the image. That generally meant they were important to the person who owned the image, in his experience, and Jack seemed the type to keep interesting company that would come with an assortment of intriguing stories. ]

[He hesitated a moment, because this was something he hadn't shared with a lot of people - hell, he hadn't even shared it with Ianto before he died - but on the other hand, he's a different person now to who he was back then. And after their encounter the other night, he feels this might be of interest to Kirk.]

My first wedding. [Glancing down at the photo with a fond, sad smile and then holding it back out to Kirk to really look at this time, letting out a bit of a greath as he did so.]

It was a very long time ago.

[ He is visibly shocked by that announcement, looking down at the photo again and back at Jack. It wasn't that he thought Jack could never be married, only that he had not expected it from him. He had thought them more alike than that, and Kirk couldn't ever see himself married. But, well, they had only just meant. There were sides of Jack he didn't know, and maybe this marriage was what had triggered his current personality...

But then it struck him. First. As in, the first of others. ]

Is it rude to ask how long? No matter the answer, you're quite handsome in a suit.

Thanks. [He saw the flicker that went across Kirk's face, and smiled faintly. He'd never imagined himself as the marrying kind either, but it had happened, more than once. Give a man enough time, and even the most unlikely circumstance can occur.]

Over a century ago, now. [Quirking another smile, anticipating the question that inevitably followed such a revelation.]

[ A century? His eyebrows arched up, mostly because he wasn't sure if the other meant that was how long he had spent here - which he didn't think was actually possible, unless one day in here equalled one hundred for their bodies in the real world, which would be possible if there was some cyrogenics involved. If a little long on the data for their captors. So he likely meant real world.

But.. people didn't live that long, or look the same. Unless Jack was an alien of some sort. Long-lived aliens there were a plenty.

He chuckled a bit in astonishment. ]

You know what question is coming next.

[He grinned, all teeth.] I'm the man who can never die. I'm a lot older than I look.

[Tapping the photo.] I was seventy something then. And over a hundred and seventy now. And looking good, don't you think?

[ For a second he thought Jack was kidding with that nickname, but after a moment he thought that perhaps he wasn't. The photo felt and looked old enough to be from the time period he was talking about, and Jack didn't seem the type to joke about that. Not in this way. Granted he'd only really talked to him the once, but Kirk liked to think he had good people sense, and his gut usually wasn't wrong. ]

Don't tell me you've been eating an apple a day all this time.

[ He smiled to tease him, but his tone suggests the question that again goes unasked. How? ]

Heh, no, usually pizza if I can get hold of it! [Which had been sadly lacking in Edwardian Wales.

He shrugged.]
I had a little accident with the time vortex. I died, and a girl who was temporarily wielding a whole lot more power than she knew how to control brought me back. She didn't realise at the time that she'd brought me back forever.

[ Kirk's eyes widen a fraction, astonished at how casually Jack says it. But he doesn't disbelieve him either. Again, that sense in his gut that Jack wasn't lying. That he wouldn't lie about that. And god he hoped he wasn't. Otherwise he was being a dick, to say the least. ]

Wow. And I thought being brought back from the dead with Augmented super soldier blood was strange.

[He'd had a lot of time to get used to it all. He hadn't been anywhere near this casual the first few decades after it happened.

He hadn't been expecting that come-back from Kirk, though, and he raised a curious eyebrow.]
Augmented super soldier blood? Are you part augmented super soldier now?

[ No, he didn't suppose you would be. Kirk usually wasn't this casual about his own experience, but when you had someone else basically admitting that they shared it, to some degree, well... it made it easier. And he didn't want to admit it, but it felt suddenly nice to have someone who did. That experience had been a major isolating factor between him and others - others that knew, anyways.

Jim Kirk dying and coming back was not a secret Star Fleet wanted getting out, after all, so it was hush hush and came with official stories. Near death. Not actual. ]

Technically, I suppose - I did receive a blood transfusion.

[ You have no idea how many nights that exact question kept him up, especially considering whom it came from. ]

What about you? Yours sounds like it has more complicated side-effects.

[ What with the you being quite a bit older than he thought. ]

[That made Jack look him over curiously, as if he'd be able to see evidence of super-soldierness about him somehow.]

Do you feel any different in the aftermath? Stronger, faster, quicker to heal?

Me, I just can't stay dead. Apparently, I'm a fixed point in time and the universe won't let me not exist. In practical terms, you kill me, I come back; you wound me, I heal fast; and I'm ageing really, really slowly.

[ He made a tight sort of laugh. ]

I healed from what should have been irreparable and debilitating damage inside of year with intensive therapy. By all rights I should need machines to function. Colossal damage from radiation poisoning. Every organ practically destroyed and my brain oxygen starved well beyond the miracle minutes.

[ He motioned to them walking. ]

And yet, here I am. As for the rest, I... think I am a bit hardier, though it did nothing for my allergies. I have noticed an increase in my stamina.

[ He winked and waggled his brows at Jack with that one. ]

That must be hard. I can't imagine just being... stuck like that.

[He whistled softly under his breath at the details of exactly what Kirk had survived, and then laughed at the eyebrow waggle, because it was so exactly the way he would deflect from the awfulness of what he'd been through, too.]

Impressive!

[And then he tilted his head thoughtfully, because Kirk was coming at his immortality from a different angle than most people did, and that was new and interesting.]

It's not so bad on a day to day basis. Being able to survive anything is useful in my line of work, and being forever young and pretty is a bonus to anything! [See? Deflecting. Because of course there are sides to this that are not at all wonderful, too.]

Hmm, you can tell that to Leonard McCoy if he ever comes here. He's the one who did it. He was quick enough to realize they needed to put me on ice to stop any more degeneration, otherwise I doubt even the transfusion could have saved me. As it is, the actual details of my return are a sealed secret within Star Fleet.

Resurrection of the dead wouldn't sit to well with a lot of the species we have relations with. But at least they didn't classify me as a zombie.

[ To say the least. Not like he didn't have problems with it on his own. Not that he wasn't grateful to be alive, but there was and still is survivor's guilt. How could there not be? ]

Must save you a fortune in beauty treatments.

[ He recognizes the deflection for what it was, choosing to run with it instead of probe deeper. It seemed inappropriate in such a public setting. ]

[He chuckled at the zombie comment, and smiled warmly at the description of McCoy.] Sounds like your doctor might be worth his weight in gold! [He of all people understood just how much a doctor like that was worth. Not only in the matter of sorting out the many injuries he himself tended to sustain when he put himself in harm's way and didn't die, but also for saving those he loved so he didn't have to live on without them quite so often.]

And hey, I'm just grateful I'm not ageing at a normal rate. Can you imagine what I'd look like by now? Let alone in a millenium or two!

Oh, he is. He came to me with nothing but his bones, and now he's worth an entire galaxy.

[ To Kirk at any rate. His dearest friend aboard the Enterprise and he could say he only shared a deeper relationship with Spock because they had mind-melded. Hard not to feel more intimately attached to someone who had shared a mind-space with, after all. Still, he would give his kingdom for his Bones, make no mistake. ]

I don't know, I think you'd pull off silver fox just fine.

I'm glad you've got someone like that. [An incline of his head.] Except not here, of course. Though if such things ever become an issue, we do have some pretty talented doctors here with us.

[And then he grinned.] Mmm, for a while, maybe. But old and wrinkly is not such a hot look, and after a few millenia... I'd just be a sack of skin bones!

[...Or a big giant head in a jar, but he doesn't know about that potential future yet.]

Hopefully it doesn't become one. Dying once was more than enough thank you.

[ Didn't mean he wouldn't lean far enough forward to take a peck from Death's cheek though. You couldn't live life in space with a fear of such things, after all, and close calls were simply part of the job. ]

Oh, I'm sure you'd find a way around it. I am sure the future will have more than enough advances to keep you looking both silver and foxy for ages to come.
