Day 407 / Action / Open and closed
Action – closed to Ianto

He's finishing getting dressed and bending to get his boots out of the wardrobe, when the sight of something at the back of the wardrobe, sitting innocuously right behind his boots where he'd swear it wasn't yesterday, gives him pause. A box. A box he had for decades. A box which couldn't possibly be here if this existence wasn't virtual and/or outside of time.

Hardly breathing, he scoops it up and takes it through to Ianto, who's already in the kitchen, getting coffee.

"Hey. Look what I found!"

Action – open

Jack's gift is a box of photographs of past lives and lovers, incredibly precious since it was blown up along with him and the rest of the Hub over a year ago and (in real life, at least) lost forever.

Find him sifting through the photos, or just gazing fondly at one of them, at various points through the day – at the Defence Force HQ, in a restaurant at lunchtime or dinner time, wandering along with a coffee in his hand etc. etc. etc.

((OOC: NSFW content in the thread with Ianto (surprise surprise)! ))

He looked up, smiling and not trying the hide the photos. Martha was definitely one of the people he was happy sharing them with.

"Of course," he said easily, offering her the chair beside him. "Did you get a gift from the wardens this morning, too?" Gesturing at the box of photos to indicate that they had been his.

"Nothing quite as impressive as this," she replied as she sat next to him. It was a lie, but Martha hadn't fully examined her feelings about her gift yet; she wasn't sure she really wanted to analyze them with Jack.

"How many armies were you in, Jack?" She saw at least two pictures of him in uniform.

He lifted an eyebrow but didn't ask further, assuming she'd share with him if she wanted to and not wanting to push if she didn't.

He chuckles instead at her question. "Oh, god, I don't think I could even count all the different people I've fought for over the years! But those--" using the tip of his forefinger to single out the two pictures of him in uniform here "--those are both me volunteering in the RAF during the Second World War. It's... it's what the real Captain Jack Harkness had done, before he died and I took his name to try and scam the Doctor and Rose." He shrugged a shoulder, a slightly self-conscious smile on his lips. "It seemed appropriate to do it properly, the second time around."

"You mean you weren't always Jack Harkness?" she asked. For all she knew about his future (and that was precious little other than she was with him when he died), Martha didn't know much about his past, other than he always came back from death.

"I never knew you took your name from someone else." Okay, she was just reiterating the question she had asked, but she was still processing.

He looks at her in surprise. How has this never come up in conversation before?

"No, no I wasn't," he says wryly. "I went through a lot of names in the days after I left the Time Agency, a new one for each con. This one..." He gestures down at himself, at the coat and the generally 1940s look of his usual outfit, because that came with the name too. "This is just the one I was wearing when I met the Doctor. After he restored my faith in humanity, I just kept it."

How indeed? Something about spending most of their time together saving the world and then not seeing each other again until the next crisis.

Martha reached out for one of the photos so she could examine it more closely. "It occurs to me I don't know you as well as I thought I did." She slides a hand over to reach for his. "But I'm glad you met the Doctor. I can't imagine my life without you in it. And it sounds like you wouldn't have been in it at all had it not been for the Doctor."

Sorry, lost this one somewhere!

"Eh, well, it would be boring if everyone knew all my little secrets!" he grinned, and he wasn't completely joking by any means. There were a lot of things he'd always kept private. It was only in very recent times, really, that he'd begun to open up to those he really cared about.

And then he smiles dryly. "If I hadn't met the Doctor, you probably wouldn't even exist. The first time I met him, I'd probably have eliminated the entire human race in 1941 if he hadn't been there to sort it out!"

Martha grinned. "Oy! We all have our own little secrets, don't we? But you have the advantage over me. Living for so long and catching me in some of my more disadvantaged moments."

She shrugs then. "He sure does have remarkable timing in that respect. There's so many moments in time that would forever alter the timeline were it ot for him. I think th'TARDIS has a lot to do with it."

"I think the TARDIS has a hell of a lot to do with it," he nods, smiling fondly. He misses the TARDIS. "She looks after him. He never knows where he's going, but I'm pretty sure she does."

He smiles wryly. "Like all that rot about her heading all the way to the end of the universe just to get away from me. She never had much of a problem with me. She was just trying to take the Doctor to the Master.

"Not that that turned out very well, but I'm sure she had good intentions!"

Martha nodded. "She'd been warning us about the Master for a while. My second trip with him actually when we met The F... when he took me to New Earth." Whoops. She shouldn't go telling him everything that happened. "He met an old friend who was dying and he told the Doctor that he was not alone. That phrase followed us for a long time. We'd no idea what it meant."

"Really? I never knew that." A faint lift of an eyebrow at that slip, but since he had no idea what she might have been going to say, he didn't get anything from it. Sure, she'd mentioned that the Face of Boe had said that in front of him back on Malcassairo, but there'd been a hell of a lot going on right then and he'd never given it much thought afterwards.

Besides, he was still more focussed on the TARDIS.

"She's a wiley old thing, isn't she?" He cocked his head as a thought occurred to him. "I wonder if she was actually responsible for him meeting me, too? I always just thought of it as luck, but..." He smiles. It's a nice thought.

"Yes, well when has the Doctor ever been transparent about anything? Between you and him, I have to resort to every trick in my book to get any information about anything!"

She nudged him with her shoulder to let him know she wasn't actually upset about it.

"Wiley for sure. I don't know enough about how she works to be able to tell you anything else. But she did try. At the very least I'm certain she realized he'd never like me the way I liked him. Kept throwing us places where, not only were there problems, but there were men. Men who really enjoyed flirting with me."
