Hey uh... Obi...? Can I ask you a favor? Mind meeting me down at the Post Office for a minute?

[ action, open to all ]

[Duo was spending most of the day over at the Post Office today, receiving things, and all that. To the observant, they might notice a certain motorscooter to the side of the building that used to belong to Haruka. They might also notice a pair of crutches propped up against the wall behind the front counter where Duo was working.]

Thanks, man. I appreciate it. See you then.

[Duo was pretty much in the same spot all morning, so Obi would find him still at the front counter when he got there.]

[ Once he reaches the place via the path of the rooftops, he drops down on the street in front of the post office. He definitely notices the motorscooter but he isn't all that familiar with things like it anyway, though he has seen it before.

He definitely notices the crutches, too. ]

Hello, miste--Duo. [ He's not entirely used to calling people only by name, please forgive him. Though he doesn't look too bothered by the mistake he had to correct. ] Is something up?

Uh, yeah...

How comfortable do you feel doing the welcome basket deliveries on your own for a while?

[He leaned his elbow on the counter, resting his chin on his hand, and giving Obi a somewhat sheepish look.]

I kinda hafta stay off my feet for a while after a little accident the other day.

I mean, I could probably figure something out for the motorscooter out there at some point, but, right now, it's more geared for speed than carrying stuff. I'd need to do some work on it and that's gonna be a little hard right now, too.

[His slight embarrassment shifted a little towards exasperation over his sudden inability to do certain things that normally were second nature, complete with accompanying sigh.]

I don't mind, I'm used to delivering stuff.

[ He was both a messenger for Master and helped transporting stuff for Mistress and Little Ryuu. ]

What did you do?

[ He's curious. ]

You know how that machine works?

Heh, good. [He looked relieved.] Thanks.

A friend of mine and I were doing some uh... what's that called again... parkour, and I landed awkwardly from a jump. Sprained my ankle. [He shrugged a little.] The hospital bots want me to use the crutches for a while to rest it, and that's gonna make it hard to really do anything 'til I don't need 'em anymore. [Rest it, be able to actually move around, that sort of thing. He couldn't walk on it as the leg wasn't actually supporting him at the moment. It was painful, weak, and unstable. So, he really didn't have a choice in the matter. It was crutches, wheelchair, or stay home. Duo didn't do sitting still very well.

He nodded at the question about the scooter.]

Yeah. I've got something like it back home. It's a little beefier than this one, but the Wardens weren't too keen on a full-out motorcycle in the dome to ride around on. So, there's that.

Once I can really get around again, I'm thinking rigging it up for deliveries might not be a bad idea anyway. In case we get something big or whatnot. The person I took over this place from had a steam powered bike for the same thing. But, her bike was left behind when they moved us over to this dome.

[ If he knew what parkour was he could tell Duo that he was really good at that. ]

Ah, that can hurt. But a sprain is pretty light though, that's good. I think you should listen to them.

[ He smiles. As if it wasn't obvious that Duo was listening.

But umm... ]

...I didn't really get most of that last stuff, what's a steam powered bike?

[Hurt was one way of putting it... He just nodded with a small smirk. He was trying to listen, anyway.]

Oh, well... [He scrunched up his face for a moment as he considered his next words a little more carefully this time. It was easy to forget that not everyone knew about futuristic modern technology.] How much do you know about engines?

Re: action

Actually, nothing, we don't have transportation like that where I'm from. We use coaches and horses and ships and walk, mainly. [ In comparison, they're not very technologically advanced. But that's fine, Obi likes Clarines--though he never expected to like the royal family as much as he does these days. ]

Re: action

[He nodded.]

Gotcha.

Well, let's just say, it's a bicycle, but the engine gives it the ability to move itself. I don't hafta pedal. There's a few ways to power them. The steam one my friend had used the steam that comes off boiling water, building up pressure inside the tank, and that was released in a way that made the bike move. This one is gas powered. It uses burnable liquid to create tiny controlled explosions that make the wheels turn for ya.

Re: action

[ Bicycles he knows, through this place. ]

That sounds really practical, not to have to spend energy on pedaling. And interesting!

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Re: action
[info]devine_braid
2016-12-12 03:25 pm UTC (link)
Exactly. Plus, pedaling on a bum ankle is a bit hard right now, too, so it's better that I don't have to.

[He also had to lean a little every time he stopped so that the Vespa's weight landed on his good leg, but that was easy enough since it didn't weight much. He was used to motorcycles and other two-wheeled vehicles already, too, so controlling it enough to do that without falling wasn't hard for him.]

So how do you wanna handle the deliveries? Stuff for people in the dome already is the easy part because most people are pretty good at maintaining their addresses with us unless they really don't wanna be found. It's the new arrivals that can be tricky.

You feel up to calling them up and finding them? Or you want me to do that and tell you where they are so you can bring the baskets to them?

Yeah, resting it will help to make it heal faster.

[ You have no idea how much he has heard about how to treat injuries of various kinds. ]

Carrying things is easy, but I still don't know much about these things, [ he taps the little device that lets them understand each other. ] I don't really know what I'd be saying or stuff like that. Back home I just carry messages, I don't have any other part in things. Though I'm good at finding people. [ He winks. ]

Re: action

[He nodded.]

Well, if anything, I can contact them and then set up the meetings, and you can go meet 'em? If that's better for ya until you get the hang of the communicator.

[Obi could at least answer an incoming message, as Duo had already discovered, so there was that. It was hard for him to think that people might not be able to pick this stuff up, but he was getting used to the idea of people coming from less technologically advanced places and times... slowly.]

Alright. We'll do that, then.

[Yay for office chairs with wheels! Duo pushed himself over to the door to the backroom.]

We've got a decent number of them in there right now. If we don't get some massive sudden flood of like 20 or more people we should be okay. Lelouch and Kitty... the younger one... they've taken over for Euphie and have been setting them up for us and bringing them over.

Yeah. [ Sounds good to him. ]

I did see some people bringing them sometimes when I've been around. [ Not necessarily visibly around. He does like to wander around on rooftops and other high places. ]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Re: action

[He nodded.]

They're pretty good at keeping up with the regular drop-offs, though Lelouch, I think, is new to it. He only took over after Euphie was gone. Kitty's been helping him, though. She used to work with Euphie on them before.

The only thing we add here at the last minute are the food stuff... like the cookies and whatnot. We don't wan'em to go bad before we give 'em out.

Re: action
[info]devine_braid
2016-12-21 11:20 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, sure. I can let them know you're working here, too. I know Kitty'll wanna meet you. Lelouch... I dunno if he's the social type, really. He's kinda weird like that. But, he'll probably at least want to meet you just to see who you are.

[He nodded a bit.]

Thanks, man. I know it's a lot to dump on you so soon after signing up. I woulda given you more time if I'd had a choice in the matter.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Re: action

I can manage antisocial types too, no worries. We'll see how it goes once we meet. If anything, meeting people is fun.

[ There are few people he can't handle; there's Lord Haruka because that guy hired Obi from some illegal activity once upon a time, and Mihaya because Mihaya was an enemy of Master and Mistress. Otherwise...otherwise, he tended to get along well with most people, even when they're supposedly unapproachable. ]

I don't mind, I've always had a lot of work to do back in Clarines so I've been feeling restless anyway, having something else to do is great.

Good.

So, day after next newbie day, I'll be in touch? We don't have any deliveries for today, so it's pretty much sitting here waiting for someone to drop something off.

[He rolled himself back over to the counter.]

I can show you about that, too, if you want.

[He wouldn't mind having Obi take a few days for that, too, since he was probably not supposed to be 'working' at the moment. He imagined his foot and ankle were going to be pretty swollen up by the time he got back to Trowa's apartment from sitting up all day without it elevated.]

Alright, cool.

[It wasn't hard, and there wasn't any major computer system or anything.

Duo poked around and took out some of the records to show as examples, since it was a slow day today.

Packages being delivered anonymously needed to be accounted for in their records, but the sender would not be disclosed to the recipient.

People were responsible for keeping their addresses updated on their own. There was a master list for that.

The prison itself was helpful in keeping them supplied with things like tape, greeting cards, post cards, envelopes, boxes of different sizes, anything they'd need to help someone wrap a package up.

And they had some weight limits... mainly based on what could be easily carried by Duo without problems, but, if he got the scooter adapted with a trailer, that would eventually be a moot point anyway.]

We don't guarantee same day delivery, but it's possible if the person stops by early enough. [Probably even more so now that there was a second person around to help out again.]

I can deliver things pretty quickly if it helps in increasing the same-day deliveries.

Re: action

We'll see. It's not the speed of getting it to someone so much as it's just easier not to have to do more than one or two trips a day. Otherwise, you'll be running around constantly with single packages, and that can get to be a pain.

[It was more efficient to do one or two trips a day with more packages than a separate trip every single time they got something new in.]

Re: action

Nah, it's easier than having to transport a message from the north of a kingdom to the south in only a few days, sometimes while people are trying to steal it from you. And Clarines is a pretty big kingdom. It won't be a problem if it's urgent.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Re: action

It's something to keep in mind if we do get something urgent. We haven't had much need for it, yet.

[He shrugged.]

Usually, people use the communicators for urgent stuff.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Re: action

Re: action

[Duo shrugged.]

It's different, definitely. We have stuff similar to this back home... not the same, but close. It's a nice convenience. But, there are still plenty of things to deliver and move around.

[He didn't seem concerned.]

Plus, that doesn't really matter here. There's no real currency.

Re: action

Aren't they an excuse not to see people face to face though? Doesn't that defeat the point of talking to people.

[ Obi enjoys meeting people. ]

Yeah, here work's more, a way to pass the time?

[ He could totally sleep every day away but he'd eventually get bored of that. ]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Re: action
[info]devine_braid
2017-01-08 07:37 pm UTC (link)
It makes it easier to talk to people who are really far away, though. I dunno what you have in the way of transportation back home, but I'm talking about people who it would take longer than a day or two to meet up with. This way, you can talk to them without having to travel, and whenever you want.

[He shrugged.]

It's not face-to-face, but it's better than not talking to them at all, right?

[He nodded about the other comment.]

More like that, yeah. Otherwise, we'd all be sitting around doing nothing at all... or just finding more ways to break this place in attempts to get out.

[Not that he wasn't adverse to finding a way out, but a lot of the attempts had done nothing but cause problems so far, so he was wary to just go jumping into another plan until it was more thoroughly thought out.]

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Re: action
[info]noraneko
2017-01-10 01:31 pm UTC (link)
We don't have any of the kind of transportation that's here, only carts, carriages and horses and walking. It's probably an old-fashioned world in comparison to most others. So it's like a double edged sword--no, that's not it... Hmm, It's both good and bad?

Mm, Master is terrible at writing letters, he needs to talk more with Mistress while he's in Wistal and she's in Lyrias.

[ Getting out, huh. He wants to get out as soon as possible, Mister Mitsuhide was in an awful lot of trouble after all, and that meant Master was in trouble too. ]

Yeah... I wonder how long we'll be stuck here...

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Re: action
[info]devine_braid
2017-01-10 02:04 pm UTC (link)
[He nodded.]

I guess so. It does make things more convenient, though. Like... your Master back home could talk to his Mistress more often without writing letters or traveling to meet her. He could just contact her instantly with this if you had 'em.

[He pointed at the communicator.]

Also, here, not everyone speaks the same language, so these things help translate so we understand each other.

Aaand it comes in handy when you're stuck not being able to move around too much... [Like in Duo's current condition...

He shrugged at Obi's comment about being stuck in the prison.]

No clue. I'd like to get home, too.

[Plus, seeing the same place for too long got him restless. He was something of a wanderer, and rarely stayed put for long. It was nice to have something of a home base to come back to when needed, like what he had with the junkyard, but he was definitely better when he didn't have to settled permanently.]

Re: action

He has barely been visiting her at all... And she's got her work too.

[ He's barely seen Master either but it was more important for Mistress. ]

I did notice that, I wasn't wearing it when I met Miss Yuuki so it was a little tricky to understand but at least I understood a bit.

Hopefully your leg heals before you go home so people won't wonder what you did!

[ Staying in the same place for long wasn't his style either. And despite that, he had ended up with a Master by his own choice. Sure he had intended to leave after only a little while but it's been about three years now. ]

See? Useful.

[He chuckled a bit and then shrugged.]

I'm not worried about that. I'll here there like I would here, so no biggie.

[He shrugged.]

So, any other questions about things?

[He'd been upright for a while now, and could feel the ankle starting to swell up again. He wanted to get back to the apartment and get it iced and elevated.]

Yeah, seems like it.

Alright.

[Oh, god, no... that would be totally embarrassing.

He rolled the chair back over to where he'd left his crutches and then eased himself up. Still being a little new to using them, it took a bit for him to figure out how to get up without the chair rolling out from under him, but he got it pressed back against the desk, and that worked fine.]

I'm gonna head out. I'll check in on you, or you can just reach out if you need anything.
