Day 399 | Open Action
Having found little to interest her in tattoos to cover up her newest scars, Martha had turned to Jack's suggestion at getting them removed. And knowing she had little to no rehabilitation points, she was willing to take whatever the wardens would give her regarding work to earn more.

Which was why she was now rolling a ginormous pumpkin through sector zero to place somewhere. It was also why she was placing hay bales in various places and hanging orange lights. None of the decorations were as impressive as she would have expected from the wardens for a big anniversary bash, but there was definitely plenty.

"Excuse me!" she called over the pumpkin.

"I'm sure I'd be even more impressed if I knew who Shakespeare was." He's pretty impressed anyway. Flirting across time and space is something to aspire to.

Martha laughed. "Famous playwright and poet from hundreds of years before my time. School children study his sonnets and there's plenty of guesses as to who his Dark Lady is. I just happen to know she's me."

"That is impressive. Congratulations on your literary immortality." There was no sarcasm in his tone. "Can you recite any of those sonnets?"

Martha grinned. "I can recite most of them. But this one's my favorite."

She pauses a moment to find her recitation voice then begins:

"In the old age black was not counted fair,
Or if it were, it bore not beauty's name;
But now is black beauty's successive heir,
And beauty slandered with a bastard shame:
For since each hand hath put on Nature's power,
Fairing the foul with Art's false borrowed face,
Sweet beauty hath no name, no holy bower,
But is profaned, if not lives in disgrace.
Therefore my mistress' eyes are raven black,
Her eyes so suited, and they mourners seem
At such who, not born fair, no beauty lack,
Sland'ring creation with a false esteem:
Yet so they mourn becoming of their woe,
That every tongue says beauty should look so."

She holds her position after the last word a moment then looks to him for his reaction.

He enjoys the recitation, listening intently, obviously appreciating the poetry even if poetry is one of the few things he has never bothered learning about. This appreciation doesn't quite come through in his verbal response which is, as most of his responses are, wry. "That's beautiful, but it's a lot to live up to for anyone else who wants to give you a compliment."

Martha laughed. "Few people are wordsmiths the way he was. He invented words that are now part of our language. But I appreciate all compliments no matter who gives them. And anyway, as romantic as the words were, his hygiene had a lot to answer for."
