Day 399 | Open Action
Having found little to interest her in tattoos to cover up her newest scars, Martha had turned to Jack's suggestion at getting them removed. And knowing she had little to no rehabilitation points, she was willing to take whatever the wardens would give her regarding work to earn more.

Which was why she was now rolling a ginormous pumpkin through sector zero to place somewhere. It was also why she was placing hay bales in various places and hanging orange lights. None of the decorations were as impressive as she would have expected from the wardens for a big anniversary bash, but there was definitely plenty.

"Excuse me!" she called over the pumpkin.

"You don't hang around the right people then. Or maybe you do, depending on that perspective you like to see then." He gave a shrug. "They're just voices that speak to us? Some people would call that God."

Martha laughed. "Genies common where you're from then?" She tilts her head when he mentions God. "Ah, but deities rarely speak to whole groups of people at once, which ours do every day."

"They've been known to pop up here and there. Usually the bloke means well and it all gets out of hand. Not many people understand how magic trades off." John shrugs. "Well, they tend to use figure heads. Prophets and the like."

Martha shakes her head. "I would be completely lost in your world I think. I've no idea about magic trade offs."

"And as for gods and prophets, can you really trust what a prophet says? I mean, I suppose if you believe that a deity exists, sure. But they really just end up looking rather insane."

"Oh, you wouldn't be as lost as you'd think. That's the beauty of magic. Unless you know its there? People just turn their eyes and look the other way. It's easier to be in denial about how the world really works. Ignorance is bliss." John surprisingly meant that in a nice manner. Most people shouldn't have known about the deals that went on with angels, demons, and everything in between. The only brutal thing about it was those were the people who got caught in the crosshairs - the ones that died.

"That's where faith comes in, they say." He shrugged. "Not really into that stock and trade, are we?"

"Sounds like life on my world. No matter how many times aliens invade, people still manage to find ways to explain it away. The human race is excellent at turning a blind eye to things that don't fit their world view."

By now they'd reached Martha's destination and she indicated where the pumpkin was to go. Once they'd set it down, she brushed her hands off and answered his next question.

"I've traveled far enough in the universe to understand how other planets' understanding of science can seem godlike. And I've seen my own world utterly destroyed. Hard to take stock in an all powerful being after that."

"Aliens invading. The little gray ones?" That time, however, John sounded like a right ass with it. Sure, aliens probably existed. Why not? Martha obviously believed in them as much as some folks worshiped the Almighty. Fine by him, really. It made for some interesting conversation as they pushed the giant pumpkin along.

After setting the pumpkin down, John rolled his shoulders and cracked his neck. If only Chas was there for him to gloat to about how he actually did manual work.

"Only because God tends to send His soldiers out rather than do the work himself. Free will and all that." John shrugged. "Angels don't always do their work either. Instead they pick someone else to act as their ah, influence, lets say. And they're not too fond of it when you trap them in a mortal body to get their feet dirty."

Meaning, yes he did trap an angel in a human body because he was upset. John didn't regret it at all. He wondered if that somehow counted on his long extensive list of crimes that earned him a spot in MarinaNova.

Then he extended his hand. "John Constantine. If any of my business cards came along, I'd hand you one of them. Just in case you needed a bit of help in that magical belief department."

"Bipedal rhinoceroses actually." Well, they didn't actually invade. And the things that did invade were technically human, though they were so far removed from what one recognized as human to render them alien.

"Called the Judoon. Apparently they're the executive branch of the Universe. Part of the Shadow Proclamation. That was a weird day." Also, she's not going to take any of your shit John.

She listens to his explanation of God and angels and then shrugs. "Interesting world you have there. If any deities or angels exist on my world, they've not made themselves known in any tangible way. Honestly, I find it more comforting to not believe."

But to each their own. She takes his hand.

"Martha Jones. Freelance at the moment back home. Though that hardly matters here."

"Can't say I've seen that one yet." He said it slowly and his eyebrows raised. He still wasn't going to go and deny such things existed. That didn't stop him from being a bit of an ass about it. "Good to hear there are still laws in space that I'd probably go and break. This Shadow Proclamation of yours sounds a bit pretentious. Going by it's name and all that."

John gave a shrug to her answer. "Fine and dandy that is. Most people find it easier to cope by letting their reality be their reality. Just, don't be too surprised if reality here comes knocking."

Not that he didn't mind sounding egotistical, but demons generally followed wherever he went. He was counting down the days till someone got into this prison that was demanding his or the souls of everyone else present. It was just how his life worked.

"What sort of freelance? If you don't mind me asking."

Martha shook her head. "Perhaps the leaders are, but the Judoon were more... no nonsense and a bit trigger happy. Luckily we don't have to deal with them often because they don't have any jurisdiction on Earth. The moon, however, is under their jurisdiction it turns out."

When he continues on the line about angels and gods she shrugs. "Well, here's a little different isn't it? I've met all sorts of people that would not exist in my world. What exists or doesn't exist in my world doesn't apply to everyone else's world, and it certainly doesn't apply here in my experience.

"As for my freelance, I suppose you could call us alien hunters, though in reality we try to help out the being first. Half the time they really aren't hostile - just scared and disoriented. But there are those aliens whose sole existence is to take over."
