Day 390 | Closed to the Kuran Apartment and Neighbors
[Closed to Haruka]

[To be honest, Yuuki slept soundly the entire night through. Probably for the first time in a long time. The day before had something to do with it. Her emotions had been so raw, and by the evening they had worn her out, probably long before her father had felt sleep tug at him. For him, sleeping through the night had probably been strange. But hopefully, after a day of staying awake, the sands of sleep weighed down his eyelids too as he drifted off.

But it's no surprise that as the sun peaks through her drawn blinds, Yuuki's eyes pop open, and once awake, she can't go back to sleep. So instead, she studies the face of her father as he sleeps peacefully. The smooth, beautiful features, eternally young, like a flower forever in bloom even three thousand years later. His appearance is so strikingly similar to that person. To Kaname. The urge to reach out and touch him is strong, but she doesn't. It isn't her brother. It's her father, who loves and even died for her, and she will forever love him as only a daughter can.

Her patience though can barely wait for him to stir. His anklet should have fallen off during sleep, though she doesn't disturb the blankets to check. Instead, she slides off the side of the bed and onto her knees, and props her chin atop her hands upon the mattress and waits. And waits. It's only now, with the monitor off, that she knows he'll get the full confirmation that he needs and wants. That she is truly his daughter.

And so she can wait expectantly.

But if it should take too long, it's really no surprise if she just... happens to reach out and tickle his nose, before her hands disappear quickly, back beneath her chin.

Good morning...]

[Cooking Breakfast]

[The house has expanded, but it's nothing she can't handle! Apron in place, she has one hand on her hip and a mixing spoon in hand as she faces off with the stove top. Now that her father and daughter are here, plus Zero, it's a full house. And she figures that while he usually does most the cooking in the morning, she can do her part too. Especially because, whether desired or not, the two children next door are over for breakfast too. Both should definitely feel as though they're just an extension to the family.]

All right...! It'll be pancakes, eggs, and cut fruit for everyone!

[But maybe someone should help her as she burns through her second batch of pancakes.]

[Breakfast]

[Everyone is gathered to the table, and okay this is fun...!]

Everyone dig in! [Half the food has been cooked by her. And the other half is whatever someone managed to rescue from her. But she's sure everyone will enjoy the pancake shapes and faces she made. Like Ai's pancake. Everyone is free to stare uncertainly at their food (rude), make awkward small talk, or maybe suggest a game to get to know one another.]

[Maybe everyone leaves to go shopping? Want to interact one-on-one with someone, or something different? Do whatever you like, it's an apartment mingle.]

It is...? [He blinks... and then looks to the floor.] I'd never used a gun before that day... I'd never even held one. But when... [His face is now shielded by his bangs.] ...After seeing the other kids get... killed, one-by-one, and then... Mika...

[His knuckles are white from how tightly he's clenching his hands into fists.] I thought for sure Mika was about to die, too... He was... stabbed and... I saw him hit the ground, so it's like I stopped thinking. I pointed the gun at his head and fired.

[He hadn't even meant to go into that. But really, it's making it a little difficult not to open up. This is honestly the happiest he's felt since leaving the vampire city. He feels... safe here.] ...

[That thought has him looking up at Zero. After his lips draw together tightly, he moves forward and wraps his arms around the older young man's waist. It's different from when he'd hugged Guren -- for one, he isn't crying. This time, it's nothing more than a hug of gratitude. A gesture of appreciation, since he's pretty sure there's not much else he could do to repay this guy...

When he pulls away, there's a faint blush. Gestures of affection were always Mika's specialty, after all. For all he knows Zero could have found it kind of weird to receive a hug out of nowhere. It's for that reason he's firmly staring at the floor as he asks the next questions:] ...Will you teach Mika and I how to play your favorite games, too? And... will you... teach me how to bake a cake?

[He has Reasons, okay? Also, one more thing.........] We...could really use some clothes...

[Zero is aware enough that both Yuu and Mika have gone through hardships, to say the very, very least, all seemingly one after another, however he wasn't quite expecting to hear those details. Not yet, at least. He probably shouldn't have commented on how his own hunter's weapon is a gun. It, for lack of a better word, kind of backfired on him.

However before he can really say much of anything, Yuu is hugging him. He doesn't quite start, but he's surprised, anyway. Then after that moment, Zero can feel a tightness in his chest, as he suddenly is recalling how Ichiru used to be. Back when they were kids, back before everything; of how Ichiru, even with a fever, would lie so that he could go outside with Zero.

And then, to think of how Ichiru is here - even simply all of what he went through later on in life - only has his heart aching more so.

It doesn't particularly show, however. Instead one of his hands moves to rest upon Yuu's head.]

I can. We can do all of that.

[There's something else hanging in the air, however. Something he heard. His hand moves to Yuu's shoulder for the moment before falling back to his side once the boy steps away again.]

With Yuuki, though. . .

[He frowns, fully expecting Yuu's reaction to be as bitter and foul as it was to what Yuuki told him.]

I know it's hard, but try and forgive her. She— As I told you and Mika yesterday, those of us here in Marina are from many different worlds and places, and even times. This includes worlds which have vampires. [He's slightly hesitating, if only because he doesn't want to choose the wrong words. Even though Yuu will reply as he will all the same. ] I heard what Yuuki was telling you about when she was a child. I'm not trying to force you to believe anything— no, I don't expect you to at all - but. Where we're from, in terms of vampires. . . the divide between black and white, between good and evil, it's very blurred. There are vampires whose behavior would be familiar to you and through what you've experienced, but there also at those who want to live quietly, and to do no harm.

[He lets out a breath after that, however only briefly pauses, so Yuu can't jump back in right away.]

I guess what I'm getting at is that she wasn't trying to say that you're wrong to believe what you do, or that your experiences don't count or aren't true. She was only trying to comfort you in the way she knows how. What you and Mika have been through, and all of what your world is put through, isn't something any of us would wish upon anyone. The only thing we can hope in the here and now is that maybe you'll be able to relax a little bit. The two of you deserve to be cared for, and to find happiness.

[At first, he's tensing up, assuming that Zero's going to defend her -- they seem like they're super close, after all. But, once he relaxes again... and actually begins listening, he can't help but lower his gaze. There's something between consideration and shame resting on his face, and it's very clear that some part of him doesn't even want to respond. Not because he doesn't trust Zero (as weird as it is to some degree, he does trust him). It's because he... is very tired of crying. Tired of feeling like he can't control his own emotions.]

Look, it's nothing against her... I appreciate everything you guys have done for us, and she's only been super nice. I shouldn't have yelled at her... but...

[He frowns.] I meant what I said about wanting you to teach me how to hunt vampires. Look, I don't plan for Mika and I to be trapped here, but while we are here, I'm gonna learn everything I can! If this place is out to trap criminals, then they're more than likely gonna bring in the bloodsuckers from home, right? We have to be prepared, and I'm not about to let what happened to my family back home... happen to any of you guys.

[He can feel his face heating as he says the next part:] If Yuuki doesn't believe in hunting vampires, that's okay for her. She's a really gentle person -- like Mika... Even Akane and the other kids were like that. It's not something they can help, so I'll never expect them to change just because of what I believe. But it's because they're so gentle, it's even more important that I learn to protect them, right? It's up to us to make sure they don't have to get their hands bloody...

[Those words might have been just a bit of a slip-up -- a hint that he's starting to see Yuuki as family. Zero too. He flashes a small grin, and it doesn't quite reach his eyes. But, he's... trying incredibly hard, here. He has to be strong for the one he cares most about, as well as the ones he's... starting to. His expression will shift to a more serious one not long after that.]

Honestly, Mika's the one who went through the worst stuff... so you guys should worry more about helping him. I'll be fine, as long as I have my family. [And he honestly means that, though it's because that's what he's telling himself. He scratches the back of his head a little.] The thing is... Mika's always been so quick to ignore his own needs... He's kind of an idiot when it comes to looking out for himself, and he's always trying to carry a burden on his own. I think... he deserves a break, even if he'll probably fight us on that.

[His smile, while he doesn't even notice it himself, is kind of fond.] I think you guys will be really good for him...

[Ah. That's one thing that Zero will echo from what Yuuki said. Or something similar: ]

I'll teach you what I can. [To which there's no doubt that he knows a great deal.] But more than hunting, I'll teach you self defense, as well. Both you and Mika. Yuuki and I, we're adamant on being there for, and helping, the both of you out. A little earlier on Mika told me the very same thing about you, and you are to me about him. Neither of you are simply going to be set to the side.

[They both are cared about. While all four of them are incredibly stubborn.

He pauses when he comments about her and her preferences.]

Yuuki isn't exactly that. She agrees those vampires who hurt others need to be hunted and killed. That's how it is for our world, at least. [he (very faintly) smirks. it's hardly even there.] She's like you- were she to meet them, and knowing what we do through what you've told us, I can promise she'd want all of the vampires where you're from to die.

[She has the capability and means to be ruthless.

Regardless to this, there's something else he catches on to.]

It isn't just criminals. Anyone and everyone can be dragged into this place. The majority of us here aren't offenders. It's just that the Wardens do not take any of our "crimes" into context. Anything at all can count as one. Even something like breaking a window, or tearing a page out of a book. Although of course that's not to say that everyone here is completely innocent of some things. [briefly pausing here] One of the crimes listed for me was murder, as well as genocide ideation, all in relation to my job. I've never killed any humans.

[He lets out a breath. All of that is besides the point.]

What I'm saying, though, is if any of the vampires from your world do show up, you'd better believe we won't let them do as they please.

[He is okay with being taught how to defend himself -- even more okay with the idea of Mika being taught these things, too. Although, speaking of his friend, he finds himself frowning at the fact that the blond already said these things about him... With a faint blush, he looks to the side, lightly scratching the side of his head.] Figures he'd say that kind of thing about me...

[The mention of Yuuki being able to want anyone to die has him looking a little surprised. Man, she struck him as just... completely against killing, or something. Needless to say, hearing this about her, is kind of nice. Now he doesn't feel quite so bad about his earlier conversation with her. With a frown, he looks down.] Seriously? I'm even more confused about why she said all that to me... If she believes they should die, then what's wrong with me wanting to hunt and kill them?

[It is because of his age (not that he's entirely sure what his age even is...but)? In any case, he blinks at the crimes Zero was accused of.] These warden guys sound like they just really like locking people up... [a frown] I'm pretty sure they just made a lot of mine up... Some of my listed crimes involved a vehicle, but the last time I was in a car, I definitely wasn't driving-- [His expression darkens a little.] And the other they gave me was "attempted genocide" but... I'm pretty sure I'd remember trying to kill a whole bunch of people.

[He peers up at Zero.] Well, I'm glad you guys wouldn't do that... I just hope, if they do show up, they don't manage to hurt anyone. The one who... killed my family wouldn't hesitate to bite someone the first chance he got.

[Zero knows exactly why she said so. It's only that it probably won't make a lot of sense to Yuu. And yet, it's as he assumes- ]

It's likely because of how young you are. It saddens her to hear such words from someone so young.

[Zero faintly smiles at him.] Although I suppose I'm a little different from that. I began training when I was around five. That's not to say that I went on any missions when I was young. My lessons with my Master took up plenty of time. [Although, even while still that young of an age he was very quickly seem as a prodigy]

. . .You're right, though. In the end, we're nothing more than entertainment for the Wardens. They like to play around with us in various ways. That's odd, though. Maybe they were mixing things up for yours? I guess it could happen.

[He watches Yuu for a moment as he speaks, trying to better gauge him.]

I do hope such an unfortunate thing won't happen, but if he does, then he would be the first we'll apprehend. Us hunters back home do have our ways.
