Day 390 | Closed to the Kuran Apartment and Neighbors
[Closed to Haruka]

[To be honest, Yuuki slept soundly the entire night through. Probably for the first time in a long time. The day before had something to do with it. Her emotions had been so raw, and by the evening they had worn her out, probably long before her father had felt sleep tug at him. For him, sleeping through the night had probably been strange. But hopefully, after a day of staying awake, the sands of sleep weighed down his eyelids too as he drifted off.

But it's no surprise that as the sun peaks through her drawn blinds, Yuuki's eyes pop open, and once awake, she can't go back to sleep. So instead, she studies the face of her father as he sleeps peacefully. The smooth, beautiful features, eternally young, like a flower forever in bloom even three thousand years later. His appearance is so strikingly similar to that person. To Kaname. The urge to reach out and touch him is strong, but she doesn't. It isn't her brother. It's her father, who loves and even died for her, and she will forever love him as only a daughter can.

Her patience though can barely wait for him to stir. His anklet should have fallen off during sleep, though she doesn't disturb the blankets to check. Instead, she slides off the side of the bed and onto her knees, and props her chin atop her hands upon the mattress and waits. And waits. It's only now, with the monitor off, that she knows he'll get the full confirmation that he needs and wants. That she is truly his daughter.

And so she can wait expectantly.

But if it should take too long, it's really no surprise if she just... happens to reach out and tickle his nose, before her hands disappear quickly, back beneath her chin.

Good morning...]

[Cooking Breakfast]

[The house has expanded, but it's nothing she can't handle! Apron in place, she has one hand on her hip and a mixing spoon in hand as she faces off with the stove top. Now that her father and daughter are here, plus Zero, it's a full house. And she figures that while he usually does most the cooking in the morning, she can do her part too. Especially because, whether desired or not, the two children next door are over for breakfast too. Both should definitely feel as though they're just an extension to the family.]

All right...! It'll be pancakes, eggs, and cut fruit for everyone!

[But maybe someone should help her as she burns through her second batch of pancakes.]

[Breakfast]

[Everyone is gathered to the table, and okay this is fun...!]

Everyone dig in! [Half the food has been cooked by her. And the other half is whatever someone managed to rescue from her. But she's sure everyone will enjoy the pancake shapes and faces she made. Like Ai's pancake. Everyone is free to stare uncertainly at their food (rude), make awkward small talk, or maybe suggest a game to get to know one another.]

[Wildcard

[Maybe everyone leaves to go shopping? Want to interact one-on-one with someone, or something different? Do whatever you like, it's an apartment mingle.]

[A hand comes down on his head and Mika looks over at Yuu. He's never cried so much in front of the other boy before - always so careful to hide it but he can't seem to stop. There is so much pain to feel, all the grief and sorrow of their lost family but there are good things too. Being reunited with Yuu, not being hated by Yuu, finding these nice people who are so determined to take care of them.

Even these ugly-looking pancakes. They're proof that someone cares enough about them to make them.

He sniffles and uses his right arm to wipe his face on the sleeve of his orange jumpsuit.]

Kay. [A soft respond that's more towards the second part of Yuuki's offer than the first. Then he frowns over at Yuu.] You should eat.

[He blinks at her strong reaction, almost feeling a faint urge to laugh just a little at how ridiculously worked up she is. But... well, there's barely even a twitch of one corner of his lips as he shakes his head at the last part.]

My parents were more interested in killing me than teaching me how to do anything like cook... [Those... incredibly bitter and blunt words slip out before he has a chance to realize what he's saying. He visibly flinches, promptly turning his head so he isn't looking at the woman.

Instead of arguing against Mika's demand, he nods and takes a few bites. There's a stunned look, and then he begins practically scarfing the food down like he's never tasted anything so amazing. He's quiet for the rest of the meal, not speaking until his plate's been cleaned (and he does wind up asking for seconds... ...and thirds).
] ...Thank you, Yuuki.

[Those words will be spoken after he's had a moment to really think about how he'd reacted earlier. There's a blush on his cheeks as he keeps his head lowered, refusing to look at her. Maybe he's... ...kind of ashamed of himself. A little. Kind of.]

[There isn't any small amount of shock by his words. It isn't as though she can't tell they've struggled through life. But even for all her own problems, it hardly compares. His own parents tried to kill him.

Visibly she tenses, drawing a soft breath. Her eyes lift toward Zero, and then her father, before drawing back down to him. By then he's already glanced away, as though embarrassed by his own words. Her hand lifts, and she hesitates for a moment before he drops back down. By his reaction, she doesn't think he wants to discuss that in the here and now. Not at the table.

So in the end, she tries to let him know that they can all still enjoy their breakfast, and the outburst hasn't changed the mood.]

It's all right. It's never too late to learn.

[Gently spoken, but she lets allows that vein of conversation to die. Instead, when he's finished and compliments the food, she beams.]

You're welcome! Ai-chan did most of the mixing, so it was a team effort. I'm glad you liked it.

[Mika had already known about Yuu's parents - all of the orphan's parents had been like that. So as he's reaching for more pancakes, his only contribution to that part of the conversation is a nod of his head. Normally he'd have no problem cheerfully explaining how his own parents had abused him and then thrown him out a moving car but he doesn't particularly feel like going into that story right now.

Once his plate has three more pancakes, he covers them with syrup too but doesn't eat them until Yuu takes a bite of his first. As soon as he's satisfied that his friend is going to eat, is when he digs in.

He does add his own comment to the conversation after Yuuki speaks up about learning.]
The caretaker at the orphanage would let us help out in the kitchen. It was always fun.

[Really, it makes him happy to know that Mika and the others got to experience a time of happiness with that woman... She'd seemed really nice, and some tiny part of him has wondered what it would have been like living with them all in that place of... color, laughter, and proper meals.

Yuuki's acceptance of his thanks does nothing to dim the blush on his cheeks. Shyly, he glances over at her, catching sight of the way she's outright beaming -- something about it reminds him of Akane... and honestly, that makes his chest hurt a little. When will he finally be able to think about them and not feel like crying? How long is this gonna go on...?

Still, though... a twinge of fondness is there. Along with the sadness comes a realization: the other kids would be... happy... knowing that he and Mika managed to find such good people to take care of them, regardless of the place they are. Regardless of Mika being a vampire. Really, he... knows the other kids would have accepted Mika just as quickly as he had. They cared just as much as he does -- if not, more so, considering they'd known him longer.

It's with that thought, the corner of his lips that's opposite of Mika and Yuuki lifts. And trembles just a tiny bit. They deserved to be able to sit here like this, sharing the amazing-tasting pancakes that were made with such kind hands. They deserved to be able to meet such caring people, like this. People who would have hugged them and...
]

... [It's when his vision goes blurry, that he's suddenly standing and grabbing for his plate and empty glass. While clearing his throat and doing everything to keep his face towards the floor, he makes his way into the kitchen to wash his dirty dishes. When he's out of view of the others, he finally lets go. Back pressed against the wall so that nobody can see, he slides to the floor and hides his face inside the jumpsuit. In spite of the urge to scream, he manages to keep it quiet, the shake of his shoulder being the only evidence right now.

He'll be fine; he just... needs a moment.

[Yuuki knows somewhat of what it's like not to have parents, but she had been adopted immediately by Kaien Kurosu. She can relate, in a way due to that, but only so much. Because her childhood with Kaien had been carefree and full of love. Her fears and life have never been so tragic as this.

She just smiles gently at Mika.]

Maybe you can help us next time, then. [Softly spoken. She'd like if the both of them would. Overall, she wants them to feel comfortable with her family, and free to visit when they like. It seems to her that these two especially shouldn't simply be left alone. They deserve to feel loved and taken care of. Any child would want that.

It's Yuu's reaction that tugs her heart strings painfully. Try as he may to hide his tears, their scent fill the room, his quick exit too obvious and abrupt. Eyes shifting to the others at the table, they linger knowingly for a moment upon Zero, before she stands.]

Excuse me... [She'll go check on him. With an apologetic smile, she moves through the room and rounds the corner. There's a small clink, and she looks down curiously to find the empty plate at her feet. The floor...? But before she can wonder over it more, she spots him. Back pressed to the wall, his body shakes, head buried as he sits upon the cool floor.

Pain creases her eyes. Moving to him, she wordlessly kneels at his side. He doesn't have to hide it, or keep the pain all bottled up within himself. It will only fester and grow then. Reaching out, her arms wrap gently around his neck in a comforting embrace. When she speaks again, it's in a quiet, gentle whisper.]

Shh... [Fingers within his hair, they softly stroke the dark stands, offering comfort and a gentle touch as she draws him to her.] It's okay. [Softly, softly] It's okay. You're safe here, and it's okay to cry.

[He doesn't really say anything in response to that. Maybe next time he won't feel up to helping make breakfast - it is a reminder of all the things he no longer has. Mika might remember how he wasn't there to help make curry their last night together and he's not sure he's ready for that yet. Or maybe it'll be fine. All he can do is find out by trying.

So he merely nods and continues to eat his food while Yuuki leaves the table. Even though he can guess what Yuu's doing, Mika also knows his presence won't help. If Yuu needs to cry, he won't do it so easily with him around.

Which is why he keeps his seat and suddenly swallowing his food is extremely difficult, so he just keeps chewing on the bite he has while pushing around bits of pancake around on his plate. Whatever appetite he'd suddenly had is gone just as quickly.]

[He had... hoped that he wouldn't be followed. That nobody would have noticed the strange way he was acting before coming into the kitchen. But... he can't say he isn't kind of glad she did. As much as he wants to be able to shove these people out of his life and only focus on the one family he has left, he can't help feeling like they've already managed to worm their ways into his heart somehow. Maybe... just maybe... he's thinking that this is how real parents should act. Should... treat their kids...

The second those arms find their way around him, he reacts quickly -- all without thinking. He's clutching onto the front of her shirt and pressing his face into her shoulder. Heh... two sobbing, clingy hugs in two days? He really needs to pull himself together. She's really nice, but he can't be so reliant on her after he's only just met her. What if she's just really good at acting? What if she winds up trying to kill him, just like his mother had? She's too good to be true... and, in spite of the fact that he can't stop himself from sobbing into her shoulder, even harder than he had when they'd first met...

...He's waiting for the catch.
] It's not... okay... It'll... never be okay, will it?

[Those words shake with the sobs, probably making them sound even more pathetic... And he's already trying to reel it all in. To not completely lose it, when she's been nothing but nice to them. Ugh, he's so confused right now... and he just wants to be able to... stop feeling like outright screaming. He doesn't want to be angry, anymore. He doesn't want to miss his family so much that it's like a part of his own heart is missing. He doesn't want to hate vampires anymore. He just... he wants to... know what NORMAL feels like! To know what it's like to have lived a HAPPY life! To just...

He clenches his teeth... hard; it's the only way he manages to stop himself from yelling out some of the things going through his head at this moment.

[What can she say or do in the moment to assuage the pain in his heart? The answer, she suspects, is very little. Time can't be rewound, and those painful experiences he's suffered through will always be with him. The only thing they can do is to work to heal. Scars remain, but whether or not they allow them to rule their lives can only be left up to them.

And... due tot he experiences and people they meet after.

Her arms tighten around him, gentle but firm, letting him know that she's there. Tangiably, and emotionally, she's there for him. His tears stain her shirt, but she doesn't pull back. She lets him hold her, and the pain and tears flow. A hand gently strokes his back, comforting. She has to swallow to simply keep the emotion from within her own voice.]

Some day. [Maybe not right now. Maybe not tomorrow either. It will always linger with him, like a tattoo upon the heart. But that doesn't mean things can't get better.] What happened can't be erased. But some day you'll be able to look back on it without letting these painful experiences dictate your life.

[Stroking his hair, she rocks him within her embrace.]

You wont be able to forget these things. But some day, you'll be able to overcome them. I promise. [She knows they can fight past it all.] I'm so sorry these terrible things happened to you. It's not okay that they happened. But you're safe now. I'm going to protect you here, and you'll be okay.

[He's quiet after she speaks. It's not because he ignored her, of course; he's... trying to believe in them. Believe that she's right, and that everything will eventually be okay. Hell, it's... like Guren said, right? He just has to keep living, right? To keep pushing forward, and to know that everything will eventually work out, so long as he doesn't give up on life itself. Besides, he... he has to be strong for Mika's sake. He can't keep letting this pain control him.

Even though it feels almost impossible to properly take in a breath, he forces himself to inhale.

Inhale. Exhale. Deep breath... Eventually, the tears stop. It's after he pulls back, he wipes at his face and nose, trying so hard to look as close to normal as possible. Not that he can do a single thing about the redness or puffiness of his eyes. Sadly, he'll just have to accept that literally everyone in this apartment will know he's been crying like a baby...
]

... Didn't mean to interrupt your breakfast. [He's looking away from her, clearly embarrassed by this whole thing. After a short pause, he's asking in a quiet voice.] Hey, uh... Where's the bathroom...?

[While he does what he can to compose himself, she smiles gently. Of course she'll give him the time he needs to gather his emotions back together. None of this is easy, but she expects that.]

You didn't interrupt at all. Don't apologize.

[She wraps her arms around him warmly one last time in a quick, reassuring hug, before pulling back. With a nod, she lifts a hand and points down the hall.]

It should be down the hall on your right. Take as much time as you need, okay?
