[390] open beach mingle;
[Welcome newbies and today-only newbies alike, while you're getting accustomed to the sights and sounds here's a few more. Rebecca opens a channel on the communicator with a bright sunny view of herself on the beach, water in the background and bright blue eyes focused on the lens. While she talks she'll swing the view around, letting snippets of the set up of a volleyball net be seen as well as a few tables worth of baked goods (thank you Chuck) and a sexy redhead boyfriend working grill.]

Hey guys. If you're looking for something to do or want some free food, come by the beach in sector one. My name's Rebecca to make introductions short and we're having a fun get together that's open ended, mostly so I can work on my tan. [She winks. There's more to it than that but she can elaborate later to the people honestly interested. And with a hopeful bite of her lip:] If you remember me from any time before, let's catch up too? We've got some drinks and when it starts to get dark I'm going to try and dig a fire pit. No wardens are around to tell me not to light things on fire so that's exactly what I'm going to do.

[OOC: Rebecca's network replies will have their own thread down below, and you're totally invited to make whatever you'd like of the post in your own comments as well. It's something of a beach party/ mingle with food (pies and the like, courtesy of Chuck), drinks, beach sports and tanning and Becca digging a fire pit later on for people interested. The beach has barbeques (also one manned by Aidan), huts and cabanas and a few harmless fish in the water as well.]

[ Is she still here? She feels like she's still here, all warm and small on his back. He really can't help but smile when she says all that stuff. ]

In that case, yeah I know your mom. She's here — we've been datin' for three months. [ Oh man what can he ask. ] You know who's idea it was to name you James? Cause that's my name too.

Yeah. [Large sigh, she loves you Papa. She leans her cheek against the back of his head and takes a breath-- a breath you'd recognize if you were her dad-- that signifies she's about to go on a long tangent again. She's prone to those. You'll realize soon.]

Well, you and mom had other kids first. But it was my sisters, they're twins, and so you didn't name them James but then my brother came along and you didn't name him James either. Because mom said that it was kind of stupid... and sexist? To reserve the name for the first boy, when you'd already had two girls, so he got to be Alex. But then finally I got to have the name James in my name because well... you guys wanted to make sure it passed along in the end. And you only had girls after him. I don't mind it though. I wouldn't have minded it if was my first name instead of Evelyn, too. Everybody's used to it. But I broke Peter Johnson's nose for making fun of it the first day of school. He was a stupid jerk. Nobody made fun of me after that.

[...] You don't know who Peter Johnson is, do you.

[ Maybe this is something that he finds annoying in the future but right now he really can't keep himself from enjoying the way she talks, the long tangent and her breath against his neck. This is his kid. He knows it in his heart and the way she talks and her weight on his back. He knows and no one can tell him anything different. ]

No, but I'm pretty sure I who his dad is. He was a jerk too. [ Asshole, more like. ] You did good. I'm real proud of you.

[ He pauses for a beat, scared to ask but when else is he going to have this opportunity? ]

How's grandma and grandpa?

[She's quiet for a beat, a little happy that Dad calls the Johnsons jerks too.] You and mom told me that already. But I still had to apologize about his nose.

Gran and Gramps are good. Gramps and me were supposed to go fishing today but instead I'm here. I'm a little worried because I have homework I was supposed to do too- do you think I'll get in trouble for not having it done tomorrow? [Steer the conversation back to your parents if you want, Aidan. She'll give better answers, promise, but the homework really is weighing on her.]

Nah. I'll write you a note. If they still give you a hard time for it, tell me, alright? I'll give 'em a real talkin' to.

[ No one messes with his kids and seriously, who needs book schoolin' anyway. He did fine. ]

So they're really okay?

[Papa you're the best.]

Yeah? Are... are they sick or something? [Why else would you keep asking? Is there something she doesn't know about Gran and Gramps?] I mean... They seem okay. Gran needs new glasses and mom made Gramps a knee brace last fall but that's about it.

No, no... 's just been a real long time since I saw 'em, that's all. A really long time. I miss 'em, y'know? I miss home.

[ Maybe shouldn't dump that on a- what, ten year old? Then again, he'd wanted to hear it when he was a kid. ]

Uh-huh. Weird, huh? [ Underwater prison, you get why they apparently didn't tell the straight truth about that one. ]

We've known each other for awhile. She taught me how to make tofu burgers.

[She wrinkles her nose a teeny tiny bit.] I don't like tofu burgers.

Mom called me the problem child. She always had weird cravings when she was having us but I made her eat bacon a couple times.

Well. The house is really cramped but Noelle and Molly might move out soon. They're my oldest sisters an' they're twins. Molly's thinking of going to study somewhere else, I don't know where. [Too young to care about details. What is post-secondary education abroad?] But Noelle's got engaged last summer. I was going to be the flower girl but I have to share my basket with Delphie, you and mom said. She's one year older than me. Emma is two and a half years older. I'm eleven and she's gonna be fourteen.

And then there's Alex too. [Her favorite but shut up apparently she's not his.]

[ Maybe if you were less of a nerd, gawd Evie. ]

So there's... [ Hang on, math. ] Six of you? An' you're th' baby?

[ He kind of likes that. His little girl, proof that he's going to get exactly what he's always wanted. Also did they name one of their twin girls after his mom? Will he survive long enough to make these babies or will he die from happiness before then? ]

I'm not a baby. [But yes. She's the baby.]

I'm old enough that mom said I can hang around when Noelle has her baby, if I want. Delphie thinks it's gross but she didn't like helping birth calves either, but I've done that with Grandpa lots. He said real babies aren't much different. But mom also said I should make sure Alex doesn't get sick if he helps out too. [Small smile because it's cheeky but also, oh, you were hoping not to die of happiness, weren't you.]

[ Y'know, it's nice to just listen to her talk about home and siblings and birthing calves (of course she's good at that, of course she is) and then suddenly there's a scratch in his brain like a record skipping- ]

Hold up. Noelle as in your sister? She's havin' a baby?

Yeah. She'll be due soon, just after the wedding. [Doesn't that sound familiar? Oh wait, yes, you don't know about that 'tradition'.]

She's not that big yet but you can kind of tell. [Blunt shrug.] She's fatter.

[ Oh my god he's dying. He's also setting her down so he can fix her up a burger, rather than walk her around the entire dome for no reason. ]

Wow. An' is she... okay? Is it okay? [ Why are you doing this to him? ]

[She fixes her dress a little, sticks close next to Aidan as if fearful she'll get separated. It takes willpower not to reach out and hold on to the side of his pants like she used to when she was smaller.]

Yeah, the baby's good. I think. It's kicking an' everything. I got to feel it. It goes like... brmrprhm. [Hand motions to illustrate bumping.] But I hope it's a boy because I want to have a nephew. There are already too many girls in the house.

Sorry 'bout that.

[ As if he actually has any power over the amount of girls there are in the house. Feeling the need for some time to process this, Aidan decides to switch the subject over to something more mundane. ]

How do you like your burger?

Well done-- I can put the stuff on it. [She's finnicky about the order and you don't... know it anymore.

Slightly quieter, to reaffirm:]
Real meat. I don't mind veggie burgers sometimes but I mostly do that for mom.

That's my girl.

[ Real meat it is and there hasn't been a burger in this or any other world as carefully cooked as the one he's grilling now. It has to be perfect. It's the first one he'll ever cook for her, after all. ]

How's school?

[She settles down to sit, pooling her skirt and rearranging it for a moment as she talks.] Good.

[A pause; she forgets this isn't the every day 'how's school going' question, and after that second passes she thinks to add some substance to the details.] I'm pretty good at reading, I'm ahead of the class... I get to read books the kids a year ahead are reading, and do their reading questions too. But for everything else I'm normal, I guess. I don't mind math so much, it's just frustrating sometimes.

Math is the worst.

[ School was pretty awful in general for him, as far as actual school work goes. He tried his best and everything was hard and maybe somewhere along the line he just accepted that he's stupid when in reality he may have some learning disabilities. Reading is still fun though, even if he's slow. ]

Mom help you with your homework any?

Mmhm. [She plays with some nearby sand, digging down to find the damp stuff to build a little mound-castle with.]

She's good with number and measurements an' computer stuff. You guys sometimes build things together, and I like helping with that too. When I'm older I want to take a class that Molly did in trades and stuff. [She may be a bookworm but there's so much to do in the world, she wants to do it all.] I already know how to do a lot of stuff but mom says I have to be older before I can use the big tools.

We build stuff together? [ That's a surprise to him but if anyone would be able to teach him it'd be Rebecca, he's sure of it. Never met a more patient person in his life, not counting his mom. ]

You'll get old enough to do it before you know it. It goes real quick. I know I probably sound like an old man right now, but enjoy bein' a kid while you can.
