Day 389 | Video/Action
[ video ]
[Haruka’s used to Juri running off - she never has enjoyed the surveillance that he feels is necessary. It makes for a fun game of tag, but as of right now, he’s filled with more fear than he is excitement. There’s too much about this that doesn’t settle with him, and being unable to search the dome with his speed or familiars leaves him quite the unhappy puppy husband.

His gaze is calm, though, if a little distant. He’d really rather not do this, but…]

There’s no need to explain where I am or why I’m here. I listened to it already.

[The pureblood’s words are, at least, polite, if a little more curt than usual.]

I’m looking for my wife. We were together, so she might be here somewhere. [And he can’t find heeeer!] If you’ve seen a very cute, angry woman demanding to see the wardens of this place, please tell me. I don’t want her to worry.

[Patient, fond little smile.]

And, if you haven’t seen her, then… [A pause, in which that smile fades entirely and the concern in his gaze doesn’t compare to the worry he actually feels. Virtual or not... he is a very protective father.] … could you tell me if there are children brought here, too?

[ action ]
[Haruka sighs deeply, mind wandering to all the possibilities. It’s impossible to feel relaxed, no matter what he’s told. His family needs him, the things he has tried desperately to protect them from with all of his strength a very real threat now. Who is friend, who can be trusted among the number of supposed criminals wandering this dome.

If they aren’t here, he’s okay with that. Juri and Kaname will be all right. Yuuki will be fine, too, with her mother and brother with her. It’s the worry that they might be here that keeps his feet moving, long after unusual fatigue has set in. Being without even his basic speed and endurance is such a hindrance…

The lonely pureblood puppy wanders through sector 4 (Yuuki would love the ice cream shop!), content in the orange jumpsuit until he finds out, one way or another, if his family is safe.

Looking among those walking by, he frowns, unused to actually wanting to get attention, unsure of who is appropriate to approach. It’s hard to tell who is a good source of information. Well, he has to start somewhere!]

Do you mind if we talk for a few moments?

[His aura is gentle and expression soft. He doesn’t want to eat anyone, he swears! He’s just lonely and struggling to cope with this.]

[There's a moment, brief, an instant, perhaps, where he steps towards the woman beneath the shade of that grove, relief flooding him and a name on his lips--

juri

--but it's gone the next, pausing, the heart beating in his chest in happiness now beating with suspicion, worry. At a glance, maybe, but he still can't believe, even for just an instant, that he thought this girl here is the sister and wife he so yearns to hear from. He has spent every moment possible in these last three thousand years with her, has memorized even the way the light catches in her eyes at any angle, watching over her as he has. Her hair doesn't lay right, her eyes don't speak the confidence or happiness he would expect Juri to have upon seeing him again and her posture...

It washes away, the height of his emotions and the turmoil within. The only Kuran family he's aware of are those he has close ties with, and the one who he sent away before Juri could kill, so they might never be faced with his atrocities again. 'Virtual prison', he remembers, so maybe they're trying to conjure something to keep him docile.

He doesn't tear his eyes away, not for a moment.]

Who are you?

[Haruka is the last person who wants to cause trouble, but he's guarded, the circumstances before his arrival not ideal, let alone now, and he's not eager to take chances.]

[For all of how long she stands in near stunned disbelief, no amount of time could prepare her for his first words in twelve years.

'Who are you'.

A stricken look of shocked pain reads easily upon her face, and her stomach churns. He doesn't recognize her. And is it any wonder? No longer is she the little girl who could so easily sit upon her father's lap. She's grown, has fangs of her own now, and even has a daughter of her own. Even if their situation is so ironically similar to this.

Finally, Yuuki can fully grasp the pain Ai must have felt upon arrival, as she stares at the man who had died protecting her.

It takes all her effort to tame her emotions. Fingers curl tight to bunch within her skirt at her sides, and she swallows thickly.]

I'm someone close to you. [If he'll believe it. Please believe it, no matter how unbelievable it may sound. Her bangs dip over her eyes, and she draws a steadying breath. She can't just jump into things. It wont make sense, no matter what point in time he's been drawn from. She doesn't even know if he's had children yet.]

Time... doesn't work the same here in Marina. Events move forward in a linear pattern from day to day, but the people can all change.[It doesn't make sense. She knows it doesn't yet. How can she make him understand and believe her?]

Maybe it's easier to think of it like a storybook. All of us are characters within a story and Marina is a world outside of our universe. At any point you can flip the book open, to the beginning, the middle, or even the end.

[Her fingers shake, knuckles pulled white upon the skirt of her dress. He'll recognize her. She wants to believe that he'll have to. That, at the very least, once the weight upon his ankle has been released, he'll know her-- the scent of his daughter. Or has even that changed over the year?]

If you can think of it like that-- the ones responsible for this place often open up many different books, and draw people into their prison here. But sometimes, they revisit the same book. But they don't always open it up to the same page.

[She lifts a hand up to her chest. Does he understand?]

I am from your same book. But if you don't recognize who I am, it's because I must be from farther along in the story than you.

[Glancing up to him, she swallows thickly, her grip so tight just to keep from trembling.]

. . . By your point in the story... is there actually four people living beneath that manor?

[Or is it possible that he's some thousand years before that time, too...]

[The flow of time has always been an issue for the purebloods. It can be wearisome, a flow that never seems to go anywhere, stagnant, until that stagnancy wears on even the strongest soul. He's been lucky, having something to combat the monotony of a never-ending life.

The explanation is an odd one, but he supposes, in those words, it's relatively easier to understand what she means, even if it doesn't seem possible and much like a fairy tale, itself.

Haruka listens to her words as much as he watches her body language. How he knows who is trustworthy is from those who don't read as vultures, those who are genuine, and he wonders how many people actually know they give so much away from the movement of their hands and the position of their bodies as they speak. How many know that the cautious, quiet husband to the fiery Juri can tell just what they want the moment he strolls into a room? It's not perfect, no, scent helps too, but right now, all he has are his eyes that seek out every movement they can through his steady gaze and ears that try and pick up every tone of voice that is humanly possible.

If there was ever a time to want his abilities and strengths, this would be it.

Maybe it's because she does bear resemblance to Juri, or because this is how he imagined Yuuki would look, all grown. Maybe because he's alone, and it's been so long since he's ever felt that way that it's an unbearable thing that claws away at his insides and he wants to embrace something familiar before it's gone.]

If you're asking that, then you already know.

[Four people, one that should be a secret, but one he's well aware that these people likely know.

Haruka, for his part, is still calm, collected, keeping his thoughts to himself. His suspicions lie beneath the surface, and he doubts he can confirm anything at the moment, until he gets those simple, basic things back that would make this so much easier.

Whoever this is, she knows of what they hide. 'Someone close to him'...]

Tell me, then. From what point in my story do you come from?

[Her heart pounds exceedingly fast. Rather than explain, she simply wants to run to him, and crush him in a hug so tight that he can't let go from. She wants him to tell her that he loves her. That she's his little girl and always be, no matter that it's so many years later.

She wants to tell him about her life, while at the same time she's so terrified that he'll be disappointed. And all at the same time, she can't bare to tell him that from her present day and age, she's the only Kuran left, with the exception of her daughter, Ai.]

Seventeen years after the first day you realized you had a baby daughter.

[She starts out with a watery smile. Her words are careful, because she has nothing she can offer him in the way of what his future would be.] And I've grown up healthy and strong, thanks to Oniisama, Okaasama, and- [Her eyes lift again, anxiously catching his gaze.] thanks to everything you did for me too, Otousama.

[There's no denying what it is she's trying to say.]

It's really me, father. It's Yuuki.

[Haruka can't hide his surprise.

That's nonsense. Ridiculous. Yuuki doesn't possess the ability to change herself yet, such a tiny little fledgling, who needs to be shielded from the world. His small child, precious, sweet and kind, with an innocence he never wants to see tarnished.

He isn't sure what comes next. Confusion, or perhaps a surge of anger, maybe even worry and hope. They mix together and he isn't sure how to handle this, who to blame, who he wants to see. What should he feel? What should he do? What should he say?

He takes a moment to gather himself.]

I'm sorry.

[His words are quiet, soft as if to cushion what he'll say next.]

I don't know.

[He can see her, and her eyes don't give him any reason to think she's being deceptive, but it's not so easy to think about his daughter grown, brought to him by a process he's never thought possible before. Everything about this is suspicious, but Haruka won't be hurtful, just because of this situation. If he distracts himself with this 'Yuuki', his child could be in danger and he'd never know it. Who is to say he has no enemies here? Who's to say he isn't somehow here, too?]

You'll forgive me if I ask for proof.

[Yuuki probably didn't understand, only knowing her parents worried for her, but she'd know he'd take every precaution. And if she's real, she'd know even more than that little girl he'd do anything for.]

[It hurts. Of course it hurts to be doubted by her father, and her identity questioned. Even if she knows why he does. Especially because she knows how much he had sought to protect and keep her safe.

Proof, though... ]

I wonder what would convince you. [As he is right now, she knows he can't sense her. And even were he to drink her blood, no memories would be seen or felt until the anklet falls free. Although a thought occurs to her.

Reaching down, her fingers deftly free her weapon from the secret belt upon her thigh. With a swing, the small rod spins in her fingers, expanding in a flash into that of a gigantic scythe. She holds it nonthreatening, clearly not intent on any sort of confrontation or fight.]

Mother used to own Artemis, but-- I've since inherited it. [She regards him a moment] I can hand it to you, but I don't know if it would harm you or not... [It's up to him if he wants to risk the electricity and burn. She's aware that Kaname cannot touch it. Even still, she holds it in a way that he can take it from her if he likes.]

. . . Until your anklet falls free, and you're able to taste the memories, the only thing outside of this I can think of would be for me to recount old them to you.

[Which she can provide too. But how much is enough to convince him?]

I can tell you that mother hates the rainy smell that comes with a storm. [Not hated... she has to watch her words and speak carefully.] She told me once, how father hid all of the umbrellas in the house and then showed up to school with one. [Her smile is a little watery, the memory a happy one, but still silly all the same.] She said it was a fond memory, even though it made her angry too. I always wanted to be like that with Oniisama as well. It made me really happy to think about.

[Even though its turned out so differently.]

I remember reading stories together. Otousama... you would get upset when Oniisama and myself would disappear to play without you. You came back once too, after a night out with Kaname. He said that you both saw flowers that would bloom only once every ten years. Oniisama promised that next time he would get one for me, and preserve it.

[When her memories returned, that small gift had become so much more treasured. He remembered all that time, even when her memories had been taken from her.] Eventually, he gave me one you know. A beautiful rose, encased in resin.

[It's the most precious thing she owns]

[He truly does not want to cause her any pain. Maybe it's unnecessary, to be so cautious, even now when everything has already been compromised, but he never thought his own brother would hurt he and Juri as he had, or that the vampire society would sink to the lowest depths, snakes slithering on their bellies and eager for the ambrosia that was the purebloods. He doesn't want to doubt everyone, to be suspicious about everything. He just wants a quiet, peaceful life and to remember what those days were like, so long ago, before fear and worry took residence in his heart.

Haruka's eyes focus on the scythe she summons, even while he listens to the memories she has that he can't confirm. The truth is, if they know of his 'crimes', they know of everything else, so he's not sure he could confirm without drinking her blood.

Artemis, however, cannot be replicated, as far as he knows. Nothing can match the power of an anti-vampire weapon. There's a weight on his chest as he gazes at the weapon his wife wields with precision, so beautiful, so strong. Artemis is temperamental. Though Juri can use it, he cannot, and he always suspected Yuuki, rather than Kaname, would be the one to inherit it.

This girl is not Juri. He can say that without a doubt. Haruka can name the numerous reasons why he knows, but it's unnecessary. Maybe she's not her, but she would pass as his child, if she were given time to mature.

The idea is still strange, his daughter grown into a young woman, seventeen and almost as lovely as her mother, but...

He reaches out to touch it. To confirm, as much as he can, if this is his child, if this is truly an anti-vampire weapon, he'll endure any pain he must. Though without his power, he is still a pureblood, and it should react. It wouldn't be the first time he's tried to touch it (though that time was to get Juri's attention!) and he's paid for it.

Her father doesn't flinch when Artemis reacts, arcing at the hand trying to grasp it, burning the palm that seeks to take it. It's the pain of a vampire trying to claim a hunter's weapon, a weapon meant to save humans, to give them a power over even the god-like purebloods.

His eyes lift to Yuuki, guilt piling on top of the conflicting emotions already there. She's Kuran. She's Yuuki and he just voiced his doubt. Doubting his own child, who only wants her father, needs him in a time like this. He's hurt her and nothing he can say or do can fix it.

Haruka pulls away, leaves it in her hand, ignoring the burning pain in his palm. It's unbelievable, but it can't be faked, can it?

Minutes pass before his lips move, warring with the things going on in his head that need much more time to organize.]

How cruel. It's unforgivable. [More to himself than her.] To be unable to trust even my own child... to cause her pain.

[Scorched fingers curl, his eyes close. Despicable, demanding proof.]

Forgive your foolish father, Yuuki.

[Uncertainty with those words remains, but that's understandable. He doesn't have a seventeen year old daughter, but a four year old one, and this is the most bizarre thing that's happened to him. To deny what he feels, though, is beyond cruel, and eventually, he can confirm it, if he still needs reassurance. Does he really need more, though? What powers do these people have, anyway? Is it really proper to doubt anymore?]

[It shouldn't have been a surprise that he would reach for the weapon. From the start, the fact was that one of the best ways to test it's authenticity was to touch the metal. But to hear the sickening sizzle and smell the burn and charring of his skin sends a lump into the pit of her stomach. Just like him however, he gives no indication of the pain that surely must be felt, a feat that Yuuki can only assume years of practice has granted him. The long life of the pureblood surely numbs various sensations after so long. Or if not, it gives them the practice to disguise what hurts.

Even without feeling the sting of her scythe, Yuuki pulls Artemis back as though bitten by a snake, unwilling to see him hurt more.

Worried, her eyes lift to his in a panic, ready to ask if he's all right in concern. He wont heal like normal! And worse, because the monitor sits upon his ankle, there's little she can do by way of making it disappear, even should he drink some of her blood now. Her anxious gaze finds his, but the expression he wears stops the words in her throat. She can tell the moment he realizes-- as acceptance settles in over his eyes and sinks into his body. His injured hand curls, eyes closing in frustration and shame, but she barely gives him a second more to linger on it.

Maybe it's the acceptance he gives her now, that opens the dam upon her emotions. With a shake of her head, a sob is upon her tongue as she hurtles forward. Tears stain her cheeks and fall freely as she wraps her arms around him in a tight embrace, and buries her head against him. She clings tight, as though terrified he might disappear at any second, and unwilling to let him go.]

It's okay. [Even so, her voice trembles with emotion, the sound muffled against him as she cries into the ridiculous orange.] It's okay. I just- [Another sob wracks her.] I missed you so much!

[The ache of knowing she had forgotten him for over ten years.... The fact that he died to protect her. That her strong, wonderful father had sacrificed himself for her. The tears redouble, waterfalls that cascade down her cheeks endlessly as she sobs, knuckles white as she grips the jumpsuit with shaking hands. She loves him more than she can possibly say. And she had never ever wanted her happy days with him, her mother, and Kaname to have ever faded.]

I love you, and I missed you so much...!

[There are things much worse than the rejection of that metal, pain he wouldn't wish upon anyone. This, as she holds him so tight, clinging to him as if she might lose him, hurts far more than his hand. Her sobs strike too deep for comfort, his heart aches and his stomach knots too tight, holding a breath to steel himself against the wave of her emotions. It may still be difficult to grasp, this young woman taller, able to reach around him better than that small child he remembers seeing just yesterday, standing so tall beneath even her father's scrutiny.

He can't say he understands it, or if it's all right to really accept it, but in the here and now, this child needs him and he can't turn her away. Juri will find him, Juri will understand. Juri would want him to take care of her, no matter what his desires might be.

So he does the only thing he can do, right now. He wraps his arms around her and holds her tight, secure, shielding her as best he can, offering his warmth and the solid grip of his body so that she might find comfort in it, so that she might be reassured.]

I'm sorry you had to wait.

[It seems like such a long time for her, since she last saw him, and he can imagine that loneliness, the same loneliness he's only felt for just a few hours, at most. What's happened here, what is her life like, why would these people think his dear, sweet daughter would belong here?]

I'm here, now. It'll be okay.

[He works to soothe her, hand rubbing her back, not telling her to stop, but letting her get out the overflow of emotions that run deeper than he knows. How hard it must be, to be faced with a man who should embrace without question, only to need to watch as he comes to grips with something outlandish, hoping he won't turn away in denial. It's okay, though. Whatever questions he has, whatever lingering feelings that are there, he'll squash just for now, so that he might take care of her. It's clear to him that she needs him.]

[The warmth and comfort is as tangible as it is unbelievable, a ghost from her past comforting her in a way she never imagined possible again. Squeezing her eyes shut against him, she soaks in his presence. His scent, touch and embrace, all of it. Every single part of this moment is important, and she wants to ingrain the memory of it into her very soul.

It's funny. Since she arrived back to this place she's done everything in her power to grow up. Even if she is only seventeen, she has a daughter. That person, while mature and so grown up as she is, still looks to her as a mother.

In this moment, however, she wants very much to be that little girl from long ago, and take comfort in the love and protection that only a parent can provide. And she stays there, for as long as he will allow. When she thinks she can find her voice again, she speaks.]

I'm sorry. You must think I'm ridiculous. [So emotional like this as a 'grown adult'.] I'm just so happy to see you again.

[It's odd, holding her, but he does, squeezing gently in reassurance, trying to tell her, without the use of words, that he's really here, that he will take care of her. Whatever has happened, she seems to truly believe that she is his daughter and this is a meeting she's waited for, for much too long. If there is even the slightest chance that she might be, that the story of differing timelines is true, he can't turn her away. His daughter is what he fights for, every day, to keep safe, hidden from anyone and everyone who might want to prey on her. His precious child, so kind and sweet, needs him and he wants to be there.

The lingering doubts, the questions that rise as quickly as he stomps them down are left for another time. Her tears already hurt, the look on her face as he stated his doubt an unbearable one. A father should always know his child, no matter the age. It's shameful, but there's no time to dwell on that shame.]

Not at all. [It's not ridiculous. That she's clinging to him means she's already forgiven his words, his disbelief, and that's more than all right with him.

Besides, he always has preferred it when his family has relied on him. He loves it, because there will be a time when they're independent, when his children don't need him anymore and it's not a time he's looking forward to.]

I should apologize. I never want to make my dear daughter cry. [His hold on her loosens, fingers of a hand gently running through her hair. Haruka looks down at her, corners of his lips lifting, a small smile of regret, an apology, but also a welcome, a warm ray to fight against her sadness.] I'm glad to see you're well and safe. The thought they might have brought a child here...

[It's sickening, and there would be very little stopping him from finding his family, if it turned out they were here.]

Have you seen your mother or Kaname?

[It hasn't changed. Not even a little bit. The gentle, comforting patience that he's always exemplified is present now. The way he gently strokes her hair... how similar, she thinks. Did Kaname get the habit from him?

In response to his smile she gives him a watery one of her own, but it falters briefly after. Forcing it back into place she shakes her head, before frowning.]

No. Neither of them is here. In the past they were here once upon a time, but-- [It's complicated. She lifts a hand up to her head and frowns apologetically.] I can't remember it. Sometimes memories can be lost here, and for some reason... even though the people here remember that I was here in the past, and that they were here as well, I can't recall that time at all.

I've heard... that memories aren't something reliable here. A lot of things aren't. [Like the two of them, here and now. Of course he wants to believe, and it's near impossible to deny Artemis, or the story she tells (Juri that story...) but if memories...

If he agonizes over it any longer, he'll upset her again. Maybe he isn't sure what is right, but he does know he does not want to see the look of anguish in her eyes again.]

But we'll deal with that as we need to. If they're not here, it means they're safe. Do you have a place to stay? I'll take you there for now.
