Day 389 | audio/video/action
[ Obi isn't intending to make himself known just yet. Perhaps chat to a couple people on the street, learn somethings. On the other hand, he's awfully curious about this little thing in front of his eyes.

It might be rude to sit on top of a tall big gravestone but he landed there (almost) so as he pokes at the thing that informed him that he's suddenly in prison, he stays on top of the stone, and mumbling to himself. Which is what he's still doing as he accidentally turns on the audio feed. He doesn't notice yet, though. ]

---so Master will be displeased with me again. Aaah-ah, even though I don't want to disappoint him or Mistress, they'll be so mad at me, and then Mister Mitsuhide and Miss Kiki will be mad too, how do I expla--[ suddenly the video feed is switched on ]--in this? But on the other hand Mister has a lot to explain too, I mean with that kind of message, getting himself accu---[ and the feed cuts off. ]---sed of those attacks. Wait. [ He did notice that things changed as he watched the glasses' lenses, but now he takes them off to inspect them that way, again. ] Hmmm? [ He'll figure this out sooner rather than later, no worries. ]

[Lingering in a tree above him, she watches the other as he attempts to figure out the communication device, mumbling to himself as he does so. A little amused, she lets him tinker with it a moment more, before finally speaking.]

Need a little help?

[ Since he’s not wearing the communication device right now, her words doesn’t get translated. However, he still understands her, more or less, because the language she’s speaking is similar to one he’s heard before.

More importantly, why didn’t he notice her? He should have? He blames the distraction that was the funny little item, but he can’t be entirely sure.

When he answers, it’s deliberately on the language that hers sounds similar to, but it sounds more archaic and it’s obviously not his first language, judging by the slight mistakes in pronunciation and the fact that he would choose other words normally, in some places. ]

You mean with this peculiar item? I do not know what it is so it would be helpful.

[If he were to speak normally, she thinks she'd probably be able to understand him just fine. But his deliberate attempt to speak more similarly to herself gives her pause. It seems he can still somewhat understand her, though.

Lifting a hand up, she points to her own communication device, still in place.]

It's a translator. And it also allows you to speak to people over long distances.

[ This time when he looks at the little device, he looks at it more closely, with as if he is looking for some way of telling that it is what she says that it is.

Honestly, the thing does make her look a little bit ridiculous when she's wearing it and he thinks that it probably makes him look the same, but if it's really a translation device (and some sort of ways of communication---that would put him out of a job had he still been a messenger)...

He puts it back on, and looks over to her. ]

Really? That's what it is?

[ He waits for her to say something, to see if it's really true. ]

[With a nod, she smiles at him encouragingly. Silly or not, it still makes a huge difference! Without it, she wouldn't be able to understand the majority of the dome.]

Yep! I'm not really sure how it all works, but it's programmed to make it so we hear things in our native language.

[She points to hers.] Since I've been wearing mine the whole time, I haven't really had an issue with yours. [. . . Outside of some of his odd word choices.]

You can understand me clearly now, right?

[ Well would you look at that. He can totally understand her much better now, how cool. ]

I can, yeah. It's amazing, [ He takes off the eyepiece again, once more looking at it in a whole new light. ] I have never heard of something that can do that. [ And he puts it back on. It's been a while since he spoke that language so it's rusty, it's easier to talk to her with the piece of technology on. ]

It's handy, right?

[It helps her out a lot as well, of course.]

Back home we don't have anything like it either. We have telephones, but... well those don't really translate anything. I wonder how lost we'd all be if we didn't have the communicators here.

Yeah, definitely. [ Saves a lot of trouble. ] How many speak the language you speak, anyway? With these things, is it possible to tell?

[ Because when he wears the thing, he definitely hears perfect Clarinessian (or whatever their language may be called) yet when he looks at her mouth he can also definitely see that the words that he hears and the words shaped with her mouth are different. He won't be able to do lipreading if he doesn't know what language someone actually speaks. ]

We'd probably be very lost, it's impossible to know every language ever. By the way, what are telephones?

Um... [That's a difficult question] Everyone from home. [Her home world, that is.] Zero, Ichiru-kun, Ai-chan and myself... [So that's four]

Sebastian-san and Lelouch-san can speak Japanese. [They've intentionally done so with her in the past. And Lelouch's friend Suzaku. She's not sure if Euphemia-san can as well or not. Oh. And there's Kazuki and Soushi, too.]

Maybe eight of us or so? There could be more, and those numbers could be a little off. But outside of my family and friends from home, it's not the native language of some of those who are still fluent in it. [And there are still people here she's not especially close with, so they may or may not be fluent in it as well.]

[ So assuming that Japanese is what she calls the language, that's not a lot of people. But at least there are a few that he will be able to talk to if he lost this little device, or if it broke. Who knows how fragile it is, he sure doesn't.

He nods as he memorizes the names. ]

There are always people that will learn more than their native language for one reason or other, that helps.

Such a skill...

[She lifts both hands up to her head.]

Even after taking a few courses, I'm still no better at my own attempts at foreign language.

I'm not fluent in any language besides the one used in my birth country, even after I've worked in some of the other countries. Language can be hard.

You seemed to do so well in Japanese though.

[She tilts her head]

What language do you speak?

I've travelled, it's given me opportunity to train. I speak Clarinessian. [ We'll just call it that until there's something official. ]

A-Ah... I've never heard of it before. Maybe it's something unique to your world?

[There are countries within her world that don't match up with the countries in other worlds that still house Japan, too.]

It might make things easier for you, if you know that a couple others can speak your same language.

Yeah it would, and even though I know a lot of people from being at a lot of places knowing everyone would be hard for most people. [ Plus he's... a former assassin so until around five years ago he tried to go under as many people's radar as possible. ]
