Day 382 - Closed Action
[Euphie is loving their new location even if she wishes the wardens had communicated better about the situation. But there they are and it seems that everyone is safe and this dome is even more beautiful than the one they left. She smiles over at Lelouch and Suzaku, happy to have them in one room.]

What are your plans for today? [She asks as she lightly touches the necklace that seemed to arrive with her even though she'd never seen it before.]

[ He shouldn't be this relaxed. And he will regret it! But it's... so, so easy, and they're all safely inside their apparently-still-shared living quarters, and...

There's no need to be on guard around Euphie, who already knows anything he might accidentally let slip. And while Suzaku's presence is a complicating factor to be sure, Lelouch is... still, on some level, accustomed to the rapport they had a few days ago, before he came here. It's so, so easy to fall back into that.

So he smiles, easing back in a plush chair, and says lightly, ]

My schedule is open. I'd certainly like to see what this place has to offer, but I'm in no rush. [ With a slightly teasing edge: ] It's probably difficult to be "in a rush" here.

I think you can run pretty successfully here.

[ Oh, so innocent. Despite the default icon, Suzaku's expression is relaxed, smiling, as he leans against the wall. ]

The food in this place tastes really nice. I'd like to try as much of it as I can. [ He says, not paying attention to how funny that sounds from the boy who's been skimping on meals even while pushing himself physically. ]

How about you, Euphie?

I want to see all of the gardens which might take a very long time from the looks of it. [She giggles, because there is a hilarious number of flowers. Yes, at a certain volume, flowers make their own humor. But she also feels very happy about it because gardens still remind her of a happier, simpler time in her life. Of course that time didn't include Suzaku and it should have. They should have always been together like this without any of... Any of the things she'd rather not think about now.]

But we should do all of it. Food sounds good too. And did you see this? [She taps the yellow rose necklace draped around her neck.] I just woke up with it on. It's so pretty, but I wonder why. Did they give you anything like it?

[ Shooting Suzaku a look, you're not funny. ] [ To Euphie, serenely: ] The gardens sound lovely.

And not a necklace, no... [ He brushes back a few strands of hair, to better show off the small earring cuff. ] I didn't even have a piercing here. At least, [ Droll, ] not that I remember.

[ His eyes flick back to Suzaku, up to his hair... ]

As far as prisoner ornamentation goes, I prefer this to polyester jumpsuits.

[ He is a little funny.

Or at least a little smiling, looking at Euphie's smile and knowing that, yes, it would be a thing she will love, with all the flowers and all the things to see.

And then, eyebrow at Leluoch for the comparison, and the ear stud looks pretty nice on him, honestly. ]

Hmm. Each of us ditched the jumpsuits as soon as we learned that we had an option, did we not? But I have not had any wish to try to take this off. [ He touches the ornament in his hair. ] Not even when I went to shower, and it's pretty steady, too, ever if I would not have thought something like this could be.

[ Honestly, the key here is that he hasn't wished to take it off.

Then again, it's not like he has had time to go un-used to wearing parts of uniforms that he would not have expected. ]

It looks nice on you, Suzaku. [She smiles fondly at her knight. If she's honest she can't imagine what wouldn't look nice on him.

She turns her gaze back to her brother, eyes sparkling a bit.] I wonder if the wardens here decided you'd be too picky to let someone else choose for you. [Where is the lie?]

[Her fingers brush over the necklace again and while she also has had no desire to take it off up until now, she finds herself curious since He mentioned it and it would be nice to get a better look at it. She reaches back to unclasp the sparkly arrangement and the moment it comes apart in her hands it goes crashing to the floor—unbroken, but also no longer effective in its mission. Euphie's eyes are on Suzaku and they immediately begin to fill with tears.]

No, no, no, no... [It's pained and hoarse before a louder protest is ripped from her lungs.] NO! I can't. I won't. I... [She drops to the ground and it's suddenly so familiar in a way that turns her stomach. She feels the command trying to take control. It's overwhelming her, but she has more experience fighting it now. She's not going to stop trying. She won't!]

[ He was smiling; he had a teasing rejoinder at the ready -- maybe something about how he doesn't have to stand for this sort of treatment, you know with laughing eyes...

And then.

And then.

For an instant Lelouch is frozen, just standing there, just staring at her, while his thoughts riot. Botani's implacable serenity shattered effortlessly.

Because this can't be but it clearly is, and he's half-blind by visions of her falling to her knees, shaking with the effort of resisting his command, streaked with blood and so confused -- so betrayed -- by the bullet through her lungs.

It's only an instant of inaction but still he curses himself for not being faster, for not saving her, and his voice sounds so far away, so little like itself, as he says ]

Euphie-- [ Reaching for her shoulders, the air is molasses, why can't he move faster, ] Euphie, look at me, don't--

[ Her eyes. There is that look in her eyes, the look that is her but not her, her will directed against her will...

But Suzaku always moved fast, and by the time she is on her knees, he is by her side, reaching to support her, his throat exposed, his entire body exposed.

When his throat dries with the realization what is happening, he doesn't shy away. He doesn't try to protect himself, not until she actually attacks, so he will know how to restrain her without hurting her.

Instead of trying to directly protect himself, however, he leans across her to take hold of the necklace. He holds it up, without looking at the other boy.

In case his throat is not restrained, he also says, his voice so tightly controlled that it's practically emotionless, ]

Lelouch.

[ Fix this. Not in an impossible way, that is. Simply by returning the trinket to do what it is supposed to do.

Hopefully. ]

[She'd clenched reflexively, not wanting to see Suzaku. Not wanting his gentle eyes and worried gaze to be the thing that triggers her. But they open again and there he is just as she imagined.

Her hand lifts up with obvious effort. Part of her wants so badly to kill him in any way she can and there are no soldiers now. No knightmare frames. No weapons. She only has herself and the thought of choking someone's life away or beating them to death is not only abhorrent it also sounds impossible. But it doesn't mean she can do any less than try her best.

But she isn't entirely lost to the overwhelming power of the geass yet. Her hand shakes as she fights it. Drops of sweat bead up on her forehead from the struggle. The strain is clearly visible in her eyes as she slips every further from simple, plain old Euphie to the massacre princess.

It's both harder and easier to fight with Suzaku here. He's the catalyst—the Japanese she must eradicate. But she's also her beloved knight who she must fight for. And Lelouch too. She doesn't want him to see her this way. She doesn't want the guilt and possible reprisal it will bring.]

[But the thread of control finally slips. The geass won't be denied and everything that was a struggle in her eyes is gone—replaced by the calm of clarity. Of knowing there is only one way this can end. A small, unsettling smile settles on her lips and her voice is self-assured, commanding.]

Suzaku, I order you to kill all of the Japanese people here. You should probably wait until the end to kill yourself.

[ He flinches a little at that tone, gives Suzaku a single wild look -- you think he can fix this? he couldn't do anything, couldn't save her -- and for a long moment the necklace doesn't mean anything to him, because in his mind's eye they're all back in that stadium and Suzaku is unconscious, can't do anything, but is not, thankfully, dead at his feet-- ]

[ he needs to snap out of this, needs to find the present again, but Euphie's order is the opposite of helpful on this score and it takes him a moment to say ]

Yes-- Yes, he'll go do that, right away. We -- can just wait here, and everything will be taken care of.

[ weapons? nothing in this room unless she breaks down the furniture. keep her out of the kitchen ]

Suzaku -- is very efficient. [ Soft. He reaches out to take one of Euphie's hands, and he'll just -- hold onto her, keep talking, keep it cheerful, until he can think again. ]

[ Suzaku is so sorely tempted to glare up at Lelouch, or to punch him in the thigh, or something to make him shut up. Instead, he keeps on holding up the necklace, his hand shaking just once. With the other one in front of his heart, he bows, even as he is crouching in front of Euphie.

Then he raises his head partway, the way he has seen Guilbert do it. ]

Your Highness, it is my duty as your Knight to bring up to you situations in which I believe you should reconsider your decisions. This is one of them.

[ Stalling, stalling, stalling... She overcame it once, when her body was failing but her mind was so, so clear. And maybe Lelouch will snap out of whatever state he is in.

Stalling. ]

[Suzaku's reluctance spurs her on. It makes her want to act directly in the moment. If he won't kill them then he must die now. Her hand reaches for him, fingers curling under as the struggle returns if only very briefly, as some part of her tries once more to fight the compulsion driving her.]

I must kill all the Japanese!

[ Lelouch makes an awkward, desperate lunge for her from behind, trying to grab her waist to hold Euphie back. He's still kind of wild-eyed when he lifts his head. ]

Suzaku, this isn't really the time! [ Don't you understand, she can't be reasoned with, she can't be talked down-- ] [ Blurting, senselessly: ] It isn't that easy to control!

[ He might, possibly, have forgotten for a split second that he's not talking to the Suzaku who learned to control it. And this might be the worst plan he's ever come up with, but this scenario combines putting Suzaku in danger with the ugly, brutal reminder of his worst personal failure, and it is not doing his ability to think clearly any favors. ]

[ The thing is, he has got it. Euphemia is strong and determined and fast, but he is stronger and faster.

His hold on her wrists is immediate and firm and gentle, and he spins her around, so her back is pressed to his chest. But don't get it wrong, careful as he is, he's taking no chances. She is not getting out of his hold to cause harm to anyone.

To cause harm to herself. ]

Perhaps, Your Highness. But you were doing well to consider that in perspective, and I would advise you to return to that.

[ Green eyes meet purple around her hair. ]

And, Your Highness, would it not have been nice [ his tone is even and absolutely frosty ] if we had something that we know is dampening the effects of it so she would not have to fight it?

Let me go! [She thrashes, first against Lelouch and then against Suzaku. But Suzaku's hold is careful and well-trained. He knows how to keep her from having adequate give to be able to gain any traction. It doesn't stop her. She struggles because she must, but she's held tight.]

Suzaku, I order you to release me.

Lelouch, kill him. It's what you wanted!

[Their conversation isn't registering. Not over the weight of the mantra in her head compelling her over and over to kill.]

Just in time for that icy Your Highness to register, just in time for it's what you wanted to sucker punch him. ]

[ eyes flit away, down to the rug. the necklace there, where suzaku dropped it. seems to take a very long time to stoop down (down on his knees, the last desperate effort), a long time to pick up the delicate chain.

then somehow he's on his feet again. bringing it to her throat. it takes him three tries to do up the clasp, fingers numb and useless.

so simple, here. so easy to fix his greatest mistake. naturally he'd still find a way to struggle with it, right? ]

[ Suzaku meant a lot of a lot of things by those two words that he has never before addressed Lelouch with. Most immediately, hoping to get Lelouch angry so he would snap out of it and stop --

Stop torturing Euphie.

And then, finally, the necklace is back to its place and he closes his eyes as he waits for his princess to stop struggling.

He can feel the calm of Botani trying to settle into him right away, but this. This is too much.

His arms loosen around Euphie, but even if his mind is screaming to let go, he is not worthy of touching the tips of her fingers, the dirt at her feet, let alone holding her, he cannot let go immediately, not unless she pulls herself away.

And he's far, far beyond words. ]

[She meant that Lelouch wanted all of the Japanese dead of course. Suzaku is Japanese, so of course Lelouch wants Suzaku dead. It's basic math! Of course one moment he desperately needs to be subtracted and the next one struggle ends just as another begins.

The necklace is clasped around her neck and the geass is no longer overpowering every thought she has with the clear and terrible command.

Euphie is no longer attempting to thrash against the firm hold. She isn't ordering anyone to do anything. She isn't saying a word. She's barely breathing. She doesn't dare make a single move or impact that might cause some kind of harm. She can't even cry. She doesn't deserve to cry even as tears burn at her eyes trying to fight for release. She's not the one hurt here. She's not the one who was accused or threatened. She doesn't have the right.]

Su...zaku... [Her apology is already off to a rough start with her voice low and hoarse and horrified.]

[ Suzaku is no longer gripping her hands, just holding her, and for long moments all that he can hear is his own rushing heartbeat, his heavy breaths, gulping for air tinged with the taste of his flat-out refusal to comply with her orders...

More guilt. He knows that it was the necessary decision and right, but the guilt is there. So few things that he had left to hold on to, from the person he'd once wanted to be.

One fewer, now. He buries his face in her hair for a moment, trying to forget himself.

Just for a moment.

Then that voice wrenches itself out of her throat, and Lelouch's words and...

Suzaku knows that he has to pull himself together, because they are both falling apart.

Carefully, he places a kiss on Euphie's temple, then, holding on to her shoulders, he moves around until he's in front of her, so she can see both him and Lelouch.

Oh so gently, ]

Lelouch is right, you know. You were not in control of wanting that, it is not your fault. He was not in control of making you do it, so not his fault, either.

We may all three have plenty of things to be blamed for, choices made in full responsibility and full awareness.

This is not one of them. Do you hear me, both of you?

[ They can't all break at the same time.

So he'll hold on a little longer. Not much to it, right? ]

[She nods slowly, not wanting to worry either of them, but of all the people in the world to hurt why did it have to be her brother and her knight?

She wants to crawl into their arms. Either of them. Both of them. But if Suzaku is being strong for them can she do any less?]

I hear you. [Whether or not she really feels it may be different. After all, she chose to meet with Lelouch before speaking to the assembly at the SAZ. She chose that of her own free will. She couldn't have known, but that feels like it matters less and less.]

[ He was -- actually avoiding looking at Suzaku, coward that he is. Being addressed now... in this way--... He's not sure if it's better or worse than open hatred.

Muted headshake for Euphie's gratitude, the closest he can get to saying you're welcome. If he speaks, he might be sick.

But already he can feel Botani pulling at the edges of that, the beginnings of what numbed his ability to be properly alarmed this morning. It's hard not to welcome it, as much as he doesn't want to.

He does, after a beat, manage a flickered glance up at Suzaku's face. You held things together. You still are. Catching him again when he would have fallen; catching Euphie. He is pretty sure all of her gratitude should be for you, really. ]
