374 - open dreams
[ Cabin in the woods ]

[ It's quiet out here. Not silent, but quiet. Peaceful is the word, perhaps, for the stillness that permeates every inch of the landscape. Wide stretched fields, deep dark woods with a heavy scent of pine and damp moss, the lingering sweetness of manure that follows along on the breeze. It's late summer, with the chirp of crickets and berries ripening in the outskirts of the woods.

You approach a cabin. It's small, two tiny rooms and a tinier kitchen, a rickety porch and a roof that may not survive another winter. Across the yard, an old barn that houses nothing but a rusted over tractor and a handful of chickens, happily cooing and roosting in the hay. This hasn't been a farm in a long time but someone is living here. Vegetables grow behind the house, a clothing line is stretched out between two gnarly old apple trees in the yard, the clothes still damp and smelling of soap. No electricity, no running water, if you need the bathroom you'll have to settle for the outhouse.

Care to explore? ]

Where is here?

[Through the magic of dream logic, it doesn't seem odd to Chekov that he has no idea what the answer will be.]

Yes, but it would be rude of me to expect you to feed me. [It might also be rude of him to poke around the cabin. Is there anything else strange and old in here?]

My home planet. Not where I grew up, but it ain't too different from it. [ Does he need to know more? This is fine, right? ]

Hey, you're my guest here. It'd be rude of me to not feed you... my mom would kill me if I let you go hungry.

[ He can poke around. There's a ratty old couch and a coffee table that wobbles and if he finds his way into the bedroom, an old iron cast bed with a suspicious bag underneath it. Oh, and a shotgun. Of course there's a shotgun. ]

It reminds me of the southern Tyumen region in Russia. Warmer, maybe. More chickens.

[The shotgun is remarkable, but Chekov doesn't touch it. That's probably for the best since he knows just this side of nothing about old-fashioned weaponry.]

Your mother must place a great deal of importance on hospitality.

[ Yeah, please don't blast your head off. That'd be an awful way to end this dream. ]

Oh yeah... it's th' most important thing in th' world, y'know. Makin' people feel comfortable when they're in a strange place. [ Does that explain a lot about him? ] I can make you an omelet or somethin', I got some eggs left over an' I found some wild garlic earlier.

[He will do his best to avoid any surprise dark turns.]

That wasn't sarcasm? [He can't tell anymore. Most of his friends lately have been incurably sarcastic.] If you insist, yes, I would like an omelet. Can I see the wild garlic? Is it very different from domesticated garlic?

Sure thing. You can help me chop it, if you wanna. [ He hands over a small bundle of garlic. ]

You know how to use a knife?

Of course I do. [He used one once, and how hard can it be? He takes the garlic and immediately runs into a problem.] The white part is the part to eat?

[ Don't chop off your hands. ] Nah, you can eat th' whole thing. Just cut away a little bit off th' ends.
