374 ♦ shared dreams
[ comrades ]

[It's only your third time to be deployed out into battle. Your Fafner to some degree still feels foreign, despite the extensive training you've completed. It'll still take awhile before you're fully acclimated to when you connect* with the mecha directly through your nervous system; it feels akin to an electric chair, but it is imperative for you and the Fafner to perfectly sync as one being. You also are psychologically and emotionally linked via Crossing with the other pilots who have been sent out.

Initially the brilliant gold of the alien enemy, maybe one hundred meters tall, if not more, leaves you in awe. Even though you've faced Festum before (granted, only a couple other times), you're practically frozen in place. You can feel yourself begin to panic as it draws nearer, close to invading your mind.

. . .That is, until, from not far behind, a powerful laser strikes. The Festum is engulfed by a massive black orb. Similar to a black hole, the alien blinks out of existence altogether.]

Are you all right?

[You turn to see a red apparition of Kazuki beside you within your cockpit. He's at ease, wanting to check up on you.]

You're doing just fine. Just remember your training, and the times you've been sent out before. You aren't alone. All of us are fighting with you.

[Kazuki's appearance fades again as the battle continues. You're able to calm down thanks to his reassurance. Even so, you continue to remain linked with both he and everyone. If you need anything, all you need to do is speak up.

Soon, you're back in the hangar and exiting the pod-shaped cockpit, along with four other pilots, and Kazuki, who then approaches you.]

How are you feeling? Let's hurry on and go for our check-up.
_______

[ peace ]

Welcome to Rakuen. Feel free to take a seat anywhere.

[Kazuki says cheerfully from behind the counter. The air is filled with the scent of food, and the ambiance of the café is warm and friendly. A number of others are seated throughout, chatting amongst each other, while enjoying their meal. This isn't the true Rakuen, back on Tatsumiya Island, Kazuki's homeland, but Watatsumi Island's version of the café isn't too bad.

A boy, no older than maybe 4, soon approaches the table. In his small hands he carefully holds a tray with a glass of ice water on it. He lifts it up to offer it to the guest before returning to Kazuki, looking quite pleased with himself and expresses as such. Kazuki chuckles and lightly ruffles the boy's sandy blonde hair.]

Good job, Soushi. You're doing very well.

[It isn't too long before Kazuki goes to take the person's order. Curry is by far the most popular, here.]

[ooc: * Going along w that gif, initially connecting can make the nerves feel like they're on fire, basically. Also, BOTH OF THESE ARE LUCID for Kazuki.]

Right.

[He speaks while removing the headgear and external sections to his flight suit.]

The longer a pilot is in their Fafner, the more vulnerable they are to the assimilation phenomenon. After every deployment we need to see Dr. Toumi so she can check our vitals and that our internal health is still well.

[The phenomenon can strike in varying ways, and be both slow or fast acting. There are small ring shapes of darkened skin around each of Kazuki's fingers, for example. That's a low scale version from having piloted for years.]

It won't take long at all. Promise.

[ He's going to follow suit since he's not entirely sure how to deal with what is going on in this scenario. It's kind of hard to grasp his head around. So this is what it's like in a place that Kazuki called home. He's not entirely sure that his guess was right either. In any case he listens to the other's explanation, taking the information in slowly. ]

I see. So there are repercussions to using these things called Fafner?

[ He muses, in a questioning tone, but he he'll play along with it for now. It's bizarre to hear and to see but other worlds have their laws. ]

Alright, I suppose I can trust you on the matter for now.

[ He's still wary despite that. ] Ne, how long have you been doing this?

[Kazuki can only imagine how outsiders must think.]

They do. Unfortunately, without them, humanity probably would have been wiped out much earlier on.

[And the Fafners have gone through so many trials. Countless pilots have perished, having been assimilated or otherwise. Plenty of his friends being among them.]

Their construct is steadily being worked on, though. It's much safer to be a pilot, now, than it was even just a couple of years ago.

[Kazuki gazes back to his own unit, Mark Sein, upon Ichiru asking. He still can remember exactly when he first received it, just as he also still distinctly remembers the first Fafner he fought in, Mark Elf.]

Around six or so years. Since I was fourteen.

[An answer behind why Kazuki didn't finish school, as Ichiru had asked before.]

[ That's understandable and Ichiru's expression doesn't change on his answer. Everything has some sort of consequence for the abilities or powers it carries. Nothing is ever free. ]

It's only natural to rely on what can be of help at a time like this. Ehh, I suppose that does sound a lot better if you talk about this in such a manner.

[ He nods in reply. He continues to attempt to wrap hi mind around a lot of the things that are being said to him. There is definitely confusion in his tone but of course it's a natural response. ]

That's quite a responsibility.

[ Yes he remembered asking that silly question when he was not himself. ]

[He's rather used to the blunt manner of reply. Although, Soushi is also different, all the same.]

I guess so. But I want to protect everyone I'm capable of. Even if it means a heavy load on my shoulders, I can take it.

[ He rather be blunt than beat around the bush to be honest. ]

What a noble goal for you to have.

[ It makes him think about the extremes that he will probably go through to protect those he wants to protect as well. That's something he can understand when Kazuki said those words to him. ]

Not everyone can be as strong as you at such a young age. I suppose in its own way, it's a gift. In any case, what else should I know?

A gift. . .

[He's quiet to say. Kazuki has been the ace pilot practically since he began, no matter how little he speaks of that, himself.]

I do it because there also is no other option. We fight or we die. And we take the life around us, in our every day life, as our blessings.

[It's a mindset that one quickly is able to adopt. Especially seeing how the enemy could wipe them all out, even as early as a minute from now.

He considers Ichiru's question for a moment, although the answer is simple.]

Well. It's as I said earlier. Believe in your teammates, and that you're capable of this. It may feel like it at times when you're out there, but you're never truly alone.

[ Maybe there was a lack of better words for what he's referring to completely, but it's almost envious for him in a sense. He's not the type to have that sort of confidence in himself, but details like this are always left unsaid. ]

There isn't much one can do in that sort of situation.

[ This person is almost the exact opposite of how he is as a person. The things he doesn't believe in or care about, Kazuki did. It's a strange thing, but he can't find any reason to dislike the boy either. ]

Heh.

[ There's a soft laugh from him as he lets out a small laugh. ]

I'm afraid I'm not the type of individual that is capable of such emotions.

[And yet, in reality, Kazuki has never been the type who has a great deal of confidence. Maybe when it comes to everyone else, but certainly not very much towards himself. Even regardless of how he's changed in the six years since he began with everything.

His brows crease with Ichiru's latter reply. It's more upsetting or worrisome (and frustrating, as Kazuki is beginning to notice) than it necessarily is disturbing.]

Then you try and force yourself to pretend.

[ Ichiru doesn't look at him as he said those words. It was easier said than done. Ichiru had more or less given up a long time ago and only persisted for his own personal selfishness. He didn't understand what it meant to be how he was in the past, positive, and persistent. He was incredibly stubborn but not for the right things anymore. There's a slight shrug from him as he steps ahead of Kazuki, finally replying to his words. ]

If only that were as easy as you say, Kazuki.

[ He chuckles, almost bitterly afterwards. ]

[Now it really is agitating.]

Maybe it would be good if you weren't a pilot. Not only would you get yourself killed, but also the possibility of many others. Are you seriously saying you'd be perfectly fine with that?

[One of his hands balls into a fist. Humans should never have to fight other humans.]

I guess that it's very good in that this is just a dream, then.

Honestly, I'd rather not deal with things such as trying to play "Hero" or being "Positive" hence why I find it rather admirable that you fit that description.

[ He mused, disregarding Kazuki's agitation. He was like this to everyone and Kazuki wasn't anyone special so why bother. He's not interested in being friends with anyone to be honest. Getting along would be the most he would consider his relationship with everyone here. ]

What if I am fine with it? Does it bother you that I don't share that sort of mind set? How convenient. I would find such realities rather troublesome to deal with.

[Not even Kazuki ever tries to be a hero. Even if everyone else around him would call him that in a heartbeat. He fights because he has to— because he believes in the possibility of hope, and that true peace can be achieved. He became the apparent ace pilot even all the way back when he was still so new with this all, when he was merely fourteen years old. He's never aimed for a title; quite honestly, he doesn't like them.]

Then there really is something wrong with you.

[There's a part of him who would honestly love to knock Ichiru out right now. But he won't, because that isn't the kind of thing he does.]

Just leave, then. If you don't want to be here, then go. Imagine up somewhere else to be.

That's not the first time I've heard that statement. It doesn't change my perspective on the matter. My apologies if I have disappointed you.

[ Though the apology in itself didn't sound in the least sincere when he was replying to Kazuki. He might be making assessments here but Kazuki appeared to be that kind of person in his eyes, much like many people he's seen or known.

Ichiru would like to avoid any possible violent engagements if necessary but this was all a dream after all. Even if he got decked here it wouldn't be anything he'd feel in the real world. However, it wasn't like he was eager to start a fight. He simply just had vastly different opinions from the other. ]

I suppose since this little farce has been more than enough even if it's a dream.

[Disappointment, though also Kazuki is honestly saddened for him. Just what could he have experienced in his life to have formed such an opinion? Yet, he, himself, could have developed a feeling of being jaded. Incredibly so. However, maybe as mentioned before, he couldn't let that get to him. Rather than allow it, he turned his thoughts towards everyone else. His fellow pilots, the other members of ALVIS, every last citizen. All of them are of the utmost importance. They all do whatever they can to reach what will be a better world to live in. He's glad if he can even give them one more day of life.]

If you want to put it that way, then.

[Or not. But he's giving in with Ichiru. (Not a habit he's familiar with). A farce, is it.]

Go off and find somewhere that pleases you more.

[Whatever the hell that may be.]

Indeed.

[ He didn’t really need to grace any of those comments with answers. It’s not anyone’s fault but his own for being as jaded as he was. Of course, how he ended up in this person’s dream, he still wondered on that. However, he’s not nearly interested enough to find the answers. It’s a dream, something that isn’t real. He’ll wake up from it forgetting it if anything. For now he simply gave the other an almost graceful bow as he moves to do just as the other said, leave. ]
