Day 374 | Action | Open
[The Hub]

[It's a boring dream by Torchwood standards, an interesting one of your work doesn't consist of a top secret science fiction bunker, complete with mysterious alien gadgets lying everywhere, incomprehensible computer programs running on most of the screens and a pteranodon nesting high up near the roof and occasionally squawking to herself.

As for Ianto he's not doing anything as exciting as his surroundings. He's just cleaning up at the end of the day, throwing away empty pizza boxes ordered under the name of Torchwood, washing coffee mugs, dusting off keyboards, putting away discarded firearms. Maybe he's dreaming about this because he organizes thing even in his sleep. Or maybe he just missed his old routine.]

Maybe. [Probably. He's honest here in this dream.] I think I just need something to do. It may be ineffective, or not have the resources I'm used to, but it's something. It makes me feel like I might be able to help protect people. [He's well aware that he's at the top of the list it failed to protect.]

[ Not going to point that out. They both know it. ] See, that I can respect. If you're in it for the busy work, be honest about it.

It's not like any of us really make a difference, in the long run.

I suppose that may be my primary goal. [Provide coffee, file papers. That sort of thing.] I think people need to feel like they're making a difference here, and it provides that. We may not accomplish much in the long run, but it lets people feel like they're a part of something, like they might be able to help.

I've never done anything like that. [ It's more an explanation than admitting to not being a team person, but he realizes how it might come off and after all the more or less well-meaning offers to join, he feels the need to clarify. ]

And before you ask — no, I don't want to join your lit'le club. Jack's done all the recruiting anyone needs to do.

I wasn't going to ask you to. [Quickly claifying in case that sounds like he doesn't want him there.] After what we did to you I wouldn't expect you to want anything to do with us. Did Jack really suggest that to you?

Oh yeah. Rebecca did too, a while back. Pretty sure Kitty would've come around to it eventually if I didn't tell her to piss off.

[He pulls a face, sort of surprised by all that. Frankly it seems a little insensitive to him.] If you want to protect people you can manage it just fine on your own. You proved it the other day with me and those raptors. And that other thing, whatever it was.

[ That's heroes for you. He pats himself down, finding a pack of cigarettes because of course he does. ]

That's what I'm thinking. Don't need a badge to do all that. [ Notice how he doesn't actually say "help people" or "save people" or "do good things". It'd ruin it. He holds out the pack with a questioning look — want one? It's a dream after all. ]

[He'll do his best to continue to pretend Spike's such a badass who only cares about himself. This cigarette gets a shake of his head but he doesn't care if he smokes. This is a dream after all, no need to worry about it.]

There don't seem to be many dangerous inmates left outside of Sector 6. Maybe we won't need to band together quite so much in the future. I'd rather worry about the library than how we can keep people safe.

[ He lights up, leaning back against the steps of the mausoleum and out of everything this moment could've been, heart-racing excitement or sex or thrills, he might actually like this the best. It's what they do, what they've done long before they got together. ]

That's what I told Jack too — who are you even protecting against anymore? The wardens do whatever they please and after Tyki disappeared, there're no Big Bads left.

[Even without the sex Spike is still probably the best friend he's ever had, certainly the one he feels the most comfortable talking to frankly about things like this. That's never going to change, even with this new element to their relationship.]

I think even if we disbanded it people would still naturally form groups to try and meet the same sort of goals; protecting others, looking out for trouble, helping in a crisis. Having something official is good for us, it's just the problem of when we overstep ourselves like with your soul, or how we manage to form something that people from so many different worlds with different powers and expectations can be happy with.

[ Funny how things happen. They haven't even known each other for all that long and Spike can say with some confidence that Ianto is one of the few people he trusts around here. Rebecca is a close second. There is no third. ]

That's the problem, isn't it? Having a name and a flag to rally around gives you authority. Who gave you that? You did. [ He's pretty casual talking about this, certainly isn't blaming Ianto for any of this. He gets why he'd join the Defense Force. It's the leaders he has an issue with. ]

[His list is hardly longer and it certainly has more people on it here than he ever did at home.] I'm fairly sure that's how authority has worked throughout most of history. Someone says they're in charge and people either accept it or they don't. I know you don't like her much but Kitty is a good leader. So is Jack. They're in charge because they know they're good at it, not because they particularly enjoy it.

[ He shrugs. Not his problem, not his leader. He'll never understand the Defence Force and what it's doing here, but as long as they stay out of his way he can't bring himself to care anymore. If they want to kid themselves that they're accomplishing anything, then go ahead. ]

You think Jack will be a problem?

[He thinks sometimes it's more important for people to feel like they're doing something to help even if they are kidding themselves.]

With the Defense Force? Or with us?

[ That's all good and proper with bake sales. Less so with eternal torture. ]

Both, I guess. Think he can keep it separate?

I don't know. [He never could seperate himself from Torchwood but that was the result of a hundred years, not a few months like this place.] He cares about protecting people, he always has. I admire that about him. He has the strength to make hard choices that hurt people or even kill them if it will keep the rest of the world safe. That's part of who he is. I know he rubs you the wrong way sometimes or you may disagree with his methods but he always tries to do the right thing. [That's so much of what he loves about him, even if he has the tact not to use those exact words just now.]

That's what I'm scared of. [ Scared. Not concerned, not worried. Scared. Dreams are weird like that. ] I don't trust him to not use this against me, given the chance.

[ Doesn't trust Jack far as he can throw him. He trusts Ianto, possibly more than he's trusted anyone before, but Jack? No. No way. Chances are that even if they would get physical soon he'll be careful not to sleep around him. ]

[He wraps an arm around his waist, pulling him against his side.] He protects the people he cares about. Sometimes he goes too far with that. I only know of one time where he had to make the choice to let someone he loves die and I don't think he'll ever recover from it. And maybe you two aren't sure where you stand yet, but he cares about me and he knows how much you matter to me. I don't think he'd do anything to hurt you.

I'm not so sure about that. [ Sometimes he thinks they have a chance but usually that only means Jack will turn around a minute later and make him regret giving away what little he had. It's not like he thinks he deserves better. That just seems like the place where this whatever-it-is will fail and break.

He leans against Ianto with a faked sigh. ]

You're more than I deserve.

I won't let him do anything to you. [He squeezes his shoulder, not sure if it's reassuring but hoping it is. They've come this far, that's got to count for something. And he really does believe what he said about Jack. The two of them might argue and push each other every chance they get but he doesn't believe Jack will really hurt him.]

I don't know about that. I think we just about deserve each other.

If that's the case, then you're a lot worse than I've been lead to believe.

[ He does appreciate it, perhaps more than Ianto realizes. That's what happens when you usually devote yourself to another person without little expectation of them devoting themselves back. It's a vulnerability he's not too keen on showing, but Ianto deserves to see it. ]

[He gets it. It's how he felt with Jack for a long time, especially at the start of their relationship. He always assumed this was just a fling for him and it took both of them a long time to let it become anything more.]

Or maybe you're not quite so bad as you think. Could be a balance of the two of course.

You take that back.

[ Yeah, he can't even make himself believe that with any sort of sincerity. He knows he's not as bad as he makes himself out to be, despite the lingering fear of hell now that he has a soul that can go there. ]
