Day 374 | Action | Open
[The Hub]

[It's a boring dream by Torchwood standards, an interesting one of your work doesn't consist of a top secret science fiction bunker, complete with mysterious alien gadgets lying everywhere, incomprehensible computer programs running on most of the screens and a pteranodon nesting high up near the roof and occasionally squawking to herself.

As for Ianto he's not doing anything as exciting as his surroundings. He's just cleaning up at the end of the day, throwing away empty pizza boxes ordered under the name of Torchwood, washing coffee mugs, dusting off keyboards, putting away discarded firearms. Maybe he's dreaming about this because he organizes thing even in his sleep. Or maybe he just missed his old routine.]

[He's very alright with that. They can have sex any time when they're awake but this feels like a unique opportunity, a chance to see and talk about things they wouldn't normally be able to. It's not an opportunity he wants to waste.]

So what about that graveyard you promised me?

[ Ah, that makes him smile. ] Just up ahead. Promise I won't let anything eat you.

[ Hopefully they'll be left alone but honestly, he wouldn't be too bothered if some baby vamp came knocking. It's been awhile. ]

Oh that's right, I forgot what a real concern that is in this place.

[He won't go looking for trouble but it could be exciting to see some vampire skills in action. The only time he's really gotten to see Spike put those to use was with the raptor and he wasn't the most focused at the time.]

[ As far as all that is concerned it's almost a shame he doesn't get to show off the one thing he's really good at anymore. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't half-hoping to see some action. ]

Should've gone for Halloween, there's hardly anyone out causing trouble then.

Really? Do you all take the day off for it? [Grabbing his hand again as they start for the cemetery since he loves all the handholding they've been doing tonight.]

Pretty much. Like Christmas in the trenches. Doesn't mean everyone respects it. [ And the one time someone didn't, it was a human. Go figure. ]

I wouldn't know; Christmas always seems to involve some alien invasion or catastrophe for us. [At this point they all just assume they'll be working on it.]

Bloody hell, you're really overdue for a vacation, aren't you? [ Sad when the villain has more time off, isn't it? ]

What do you think this prison is? There's a beach, a spa, handsome vampires having their way with me. [A kiss to reinforce that last point.] I think that's the exact definition of a vacation.

Right. [ When you put it that way... ] So Jack's whole crusade to find a way out — you behind that?

If we find a lead on it, yes, I'd work towards it. But it's not my biggest priority working with the Defense Force. [Always the pessimist with these things. Or maybe the realist.]

Seems like a recipe for disaster, if you ask me. [ He steers them over to a mausoleum to sit down on the short set of stairs. ] Is that part of the vacation too?

The Defense Force? [He sits, looking thoughtful.] I suppose it's mostly because it feels like Torchwood. It's something familiar.

Except no aliens. [ Loads of other things, though. ] Not that I care, but it does sound like you lot are more in it for the camaraderie than to actually do something.

[ Where were they when Tyki was out maiming people? Where were they during raptors? For someone who doesn't care about the Defense Force, he has some really strong opinions about how it's run. ]

Maybe. [Probably. He's honest here in this dream.] I think I just need something to do. It may be ineffective, or not have the resources I'm used to, but it's something. It makes me feel like I might be able to help protect people. [He's well aware that he's at the top of the list it failed to protect.]

[ Not going to point that out. They both know it. ] See, that I can respect. If you're in it for the busy work, be honest about it.

It's not like any of us really make a difference, in the long run.

I suppose that may be my primary goal. [Provide coffee, file papers. That sort of thing.] I think people need to feel like they're making a difference here, and it provides that. We may not accomplish much in the long run, but it lets people feel like they're a part of something, like they might be able to help.

I've never done anything like that. [ It's more an explanation than admitting to not being a team person, but he realizes how it might come off and after all the more or less well-meaning offers to join, he feels the need to clarify. ]

And before you ask — no, I don't want to join your lit'le club. Jack's done all the recruiting anyone needs to do.

I wasn't going to ask you to. [Quickly claifying in case that sounds like he doesn't want him there.] After what we did to you I wouldn't expect you to want anything to do with us. Did Jack really suggest that to you?

Oh yeah. Rebecca did too, a while back. Pretty sure Kitty would've come around to it eventually if I didn't tell her to piss off.

[He pulls a face, sort of surprised by all that. Frankly it seems a little insensitive to him.] If you want to protect people you can manage it just fine on your own. You proved it the other day with me and those raptors. And that other thing, whatever it was.

[ That's heroes for you. He pats himself down, finding a pack of cigarettes because of course he does. ]

That's what I'm thinking. Don't need a badge to do all that. [ Notice how he doesn't actually say "help people" or "save people" or "do good things". It'd ruin it. He holds out the pack with a questioning look — want one? It's a dream after all. ]

[He'll do his best to continue to pretend Spike's such a badass who only cares about himself. This cigarette gets a shake of his head but he doesn't care if he smokes. This is a dream after all, no need to worry about it.]

There don't seem to be many dangerous inmates left outside of Sector 6. Maybe we won't need to band together quite so much in the future. I'd rather worry about the library than how we can keep people safe.

[ He lights up, leaning back against the steps of the mausoleum and out of everything this moment could've been, heart-racing excitement or sex or thrills, he might actually like this the best. It's what they do, what they've done long before they got together. ]

That's what I told Jack too — who are you even protecting against anymore? The wardens do whatever they please and after Tyki disappeared, there're no Big Bads left.

[Even without the sex Spike is still probably the best friend he's ever had, certainly the one he feels the most comfortable talking to frankly about things like this. That's never going to change, even with this new element to their relationship.]

I think even if we disbanded it people would still naturally form groups to try and meet the same sort of goals; protecting others, looking out for trouble, helping in a crisis. Having something official is good for us, it's just the problem of when we overstep ourselves like with your soul, or how we manage to form something that people from so many different worlds with different powers and expectations can be happy with.
