Day 374 | Action | Open
[The Hub]

[It's a boring dream by Torchwood standards, an interesting one of your work doesn't consist of a top secret science fiction bunker, complete with mysterious alien gadgets lying everywhere, incomprehensible computer programs running on most of the screens and a pteranodon nesting high up near the roof and occasionally squawking to herself.

As for Ianto he's not doing anything as exciting as his surroundings. He's just cleaning up at the end of the day, throwing away empty pizza boxes ordered under the name of Torchwood, washing coffee mugs, dusting off keyboards, putting away discarded firearms. Maybe he's dreaming about this because he organizes thing even in his sleep. Or maybe he just missed his old routine.]

[ That's why he's reluctant to do the same, to be honest. On one hand he's pretty sure it'll happen whether he's there or not, people from his future told him as much, but on the other... can he risk it? End of the world just because he's too much of a chicken to face the consequences? No.

Not the discussion for tonight. Not something he wants to think about when it's not even a choice he can make. ]

Anywhere, huh... that doesn't really narrow it down. [ But, seeing as they're here. ] You don't have anywhere you want to go? Places you've always wanted to see and never did?

California might make the list. [Maybe he's just saying it, but it is a new place, one he's never been to. Experiencing it is nice.] I never really thought about it. Growing up it was more about not wanting to be where I was than having any particular destination in mind. And we travel around more than you might think with Torchwood. Plus you get a sense of how big it all is, how many worlds there are out there. Sort of puts things in perspective.

Question is, how many of those are worth visiting?

[ But California, sure. A nice walk in a surprisingly quiet Sunnydale. It's something even if it feels like nothing in comparison to what he wants to show.

He's silent for a beat and then in what is a surprising turn of events, he feels a moment of complete honesty. Not even so much towards Ianto, as to himself. This is rare. ]

It was like that for me too, before Dru came along. That's why I didn't fight it. Anything had to be better than that.

Depends on who you ask I suppose. [Jack, the Doctor, Martha, Rose when she was here. They all loved it. Hard to argue with that many people even if all he ever seems to see is the shit the falls through the cracks.

He nods silently. That's it right there. That's why he does all of this, even knowing it will kill him. Because it's better than the alternative.]
It's like that. Like knowing if I didn't take this job I'd regret it my entire life. Even if they Retconned me I think I'd still know something was missing.

[ He untangles their hands, but only so he can slide an arm across Ianto's shoulders, tugging him in close as he can without affecting their stroll. Feeling pretty protective over this guy, already. Imagine that. ]

Was it worth it?

Well I doubt shoplifting when I was a kid would have been enough to land me in this prison with you so yes, I'd say it was. [A teasing little smile, so that comment can be taken less seriously if it needs to be.]

[ Oh my god what a sweet nerd you are. He actually has to stop to give Ianto A Look at that comment, not taking it all that seriously but still rewarding it with a kiss against his head. ]

You ever been to prison for real?

[He laughs, shaking his head.] No, I got picked up by the cops once for it when I was a kid and they yelled at me a bit, that was all. I've been trapped in those cells a few times myself but that's a bit different.

Not sure I want to know what you were doing in there. [ Don't tell him about your freaky roleplaying. ]

I was in prison for awhile... tax evasion. [ Yep. ] Not as fun as underwater fishbowls, but a lot easier to get out of. Better than the Initiative too, but what isn't.

Sorry, just to clarify, vampires pay taxes? [Visibly fighting back laughter. Let's be honest, that was not what he was expecting.]

Of course we don't. Don't ask me how they nabbed me on it, but they did. [ No no it's absurd, go ahead. ]

There's this wanker called the Immortal. Old rival of me and Angelus, complete tosser. Don't know how he did it, but he did.

Has anyone ever mentioned to you vampires how absurd all your name choices are? Admittedly yours has grown on me but they're all a bit melodramatic. [In a weirdly endearing sort of way.]

[Vampire Bill is basically the stupidest vampire let's be honest.] I heard about that, when we were trying to learn about you before the soul thing. [No comment on it really one way or another. Torchwood would have killed him for it, but he can't find it in himself to hate him for it or pass much judgement at this point.]

Yeah? What else did you find out? [ Curious, but also a little apprehensive. It's weird, feeling like he should be ashamed of the very same things he was bursting with pride over not too long ago. ]

That was it, really. And that you killed two Slayers. Your past wasn't as much of a priority at the time. [He wraps his own arm around his waist comfortably.] It is now because I like knowing about you, not because I care what you did.

[ What are you doing to him, why are you so adorable. Another strange thing. He's always been bragging about what he does but most of the time, anyone who matters didn't care. Ianto matters and he cares without being impressed and how do you even deal with that sort of thing? Ugh. ]

You know I've lost count, right? Over how many I've killed? You should care about that.

[These are the things that matter to him. The things no one else seems to want to notice about people. Maybe because he's too used to being unnoticed himself.]

Jack's lost count of how many times he's died. I lost count of how many people died at Torchwood London while I survived. I care about it, but from everything I've seen I don't think there are many people out there who don't have something terrible about them or what they've done.

[ That's the thing, isn't it? Why he's so hung up on Ianto — they're the bloody same. Sure, he hasn't been unnoticed for well over a century but that was why he didn't protest when Dru turned him. No one noticed him. No one bloody cared so why shouldn't he die and rise a vampire? Even after he's paid attention when no one else does, perceptive to a bloody fault.

It's a realization he might come to fully later, one that might force him to sit down with a bottle of whiskey and examine his choices, but so far he hasn't put the pieces together. It's still sweet, achingly so. He pulls them into a halt and Ianto into an embrace, tucking him in against his chest. Not even a kiss, just this and he probably doesn't have to say it out loud for the message to come through. ]

[Dreams are like that, a world where they can make these realizations and say these things without the consequences they would have in the real world. It's easier to feel things here, to see them. It might get more complicated when they wake up but right now none of that matters. He tucks himself in against Spike's chest, so calm and perfect in the warm California night.]

I'm going to fall in love with you if you aren't careful. [And they both know he promised not to do that, a long time ago. It's the sort of warning he can give in a dream that would take years to admit in reality.]

[ He gives a soft snort in amusement. Ianto did promise that, didn't he? Just like he said he'd never kiss him by his own free will and now here they are. ]

Would that be so terrible?
