Day 374 | Action | Open
[The Hub]

[It's a boring dream by Torchwood standards, an interesting one of your work doesn't consist of a top secret science fiction bunker, complete with mysterious alien gadgets lying everywhere, incomprehensible computer programs running on most of the screens and a pteranodon nesting high up near the roof and occasionally squawking to herself.

As for Ianto he's not doing anything as exciting as his surroundings. He's just cleaning up at the end of the day, throwing away empty pizza boxes ordered under the name of Torchwood, washing coffee mugs, dusting off keyboards, putting away discarded firearms. Maybe he's dreaming about this because he organizes thing even in his sleep. Or maybe he just missed his old routine.]

Let's go, then. You should see more of California while we're here. Who knows how long the home of the hell mouth will stay standing?

[ He knows. Not exactly, but a rough estimate and maybe that's another reason why he wants to take advantage of this. Someone should remember this place. He won't be around to do it.

Placing a hand on the small of Ianto's back he guides him out of the Bronze and into the warm Californian night air. They can take a walk, maybe get it on in a crypt somewhere. ]

Quite a change from Cardiff. [He's never been to California before, and while a crypt isn't exactly on his list of things to do as a tourist it feels pretty appropriate for this place.]

Funny, the Rift and your hell mouth aren't all that different in concept. But we do have very different ways of handling them, don't we?

No risk of growing gills here. [ Well. ] Don't really know if you can say a hellmouth is handled. Controlled, maybe. Never successfully.

For the record, it's not part of the sightseeing tour.

I don't think any of us have ever grown gills. Gwen got pregnant with an alien parasite once but that's the closest I can think of. [Controlled. That sounds like their own way of handling the Rift. Respond as best you can and hope not too many people die.]

I'd rather see places you like in any case. That's more interesting to me.

[ Or, as is often the case with the hellmouth, try to summon an ancient ritual to open it up and release literal hell. He's usually not on the "hoping not too many people die" side. ]

Hope you don't mind a stroll across the graveyard, in that case.

Sounds romantic. [He may be teasing but in a weird way it actually does. He wants to see the places Spike spends his time, and he's willing to bet a lot of it it here. He knows how much he likes the cemetery in the dome.]

[ It's where he belongs, with the rest of the ghouls.]

Y'know... I'm kind of glad you get to see this place. There's no one left in the dome that know what it's like and in a few years there won't be anything left but a hole in the ground.

[He nods, understanding that all too well.] The Hub gets destroyed, too. Around when I die, apparently. I'm glad we've got an opportunity to show each other places like this. I feel like describing them doesn't really do them justice, not when they're a part of our lives like this.

[ He makes a noise, amused. One more thing they have in common, then. ]

Jack told me he's taking you to see the universe, if we ever get out of that fishbowl.

That's what we tell ourselves. [Which isn't quite the same thing as a yes.] Honesly I don't know if I'd want to risk leaving. It seems like most people who leave here forget about it. I don't want that to happen.

No one comes back the same. [ Though Jack seems to have fared better than some. He pauses for a moment, mulling this over. ]

Stay with me.

[He finds his hand, laces his fingers through it.]

I can't promise that. They hardly seem to consult us before they take us away. But if we had the opportunity to leave here, all of us together, I wouldn't leave you behind. [Maybe that's too big of an admission for this early in their relationship, but this is a dream,, isn't it? He can get away with it.]

[ Of course he can. It's not like Spike would think it all that strange even outside of a dream, what with his almost comically intense committing issues. ]

Where would we go, then?

Anywhere. Well, anywhere besides home for me. I've got no reason to go back there. [If he knew his death was important, that it saved the world or protected people he might feel differently, but it doesn't. He dies because someone calls Jack's bluff. He has no reason to go back to that and nothing else ties him to Cardiff, certainly not his family.]

[ That's why he's reluctant to do the same, to be honest. On one hand he's pretty sure it'll happen whether he's there or not, people from his future told him as much, but on the other... can he risk it? End of the world just because he's too much of a chicken to face the consequences? No.

Not the discussion for tonight. Not something he wants to think about when it's not even a choice he can make. ]

Anywhere, huh... that doesn't really narrow it down. [ But, seeing as they're here. ] You don't have anywhere you want to go? Places you've always wanted to see and never did?

California might make the list. [Maybe he's just saying it, but it is a new place, one he's never been to. Experiencing it is nice.] I never really thought about it. Growing up it was more about not wanting to be where I was than having any particular destination in mind. And we travel around more than you might think with Torchwood. Plus you get a sense of how big it all is, how many worlds there are out there. Sort of puts things in perspective.

Question is, how many of those are worth visiting?

[ But California, sure. A nice walk in a surprisingly quiet Sunnydale. It's something even if it feels like nothing in comparison to what he wants to show.

He's silent for a beat and then in what is a surprising turn of events, he feels a moment of complete honesty. Not even so much towards Ianto, as to himself. This is rare. ]

It was like that for me too, before Dru came along. That's why I didn't fight it. Anything had to be better than that.

Depends on who you ask I suppose. [Jack, the Doctor, Martha, Rose when she was here. They all loved it. Hard to argue with that many people even if all he ever seems to see is the shit the falls through the cracks.

He nods silently. That's it right there. That's why he does all of this, even knowing it will kill him. Because it's better than the alternative.]
It's like that. Like knowing if I didn't take this job I'd regret it my entire life. Even if they Retconned me I think I'd still know something was missing.

[ He untangles their hands, but only so he can slide an arm across Ianto's shoulders, tugging him in close as he can without affecting their stroll. Feeling pretty protective over this guy, already. Imagine that. ]

Was it worth it?

Well I doubt shoplifting when I was a kid would have been enough to land me in this prison with you so yes, I'd say it was. [A teasing little smile, so that comment can be taken less seriously if it needs to be.]

You ever been to prison for real?

[He laughs, shaking his head.] No, I got picked up by the cops once for it when I was a kid and they yelled at me a bit, that was all. I've been trapped in those cells a few times myself but that's a bit different.

Not sure I want to know what you were doing in there. [ Don't tell him about your freaky roleplaying. ]

I was in prison for awhile... tax evasion. [ Yep. ] Not as fun as underwater fishbowls, but a lot easier to get out of. Better than the Initiative too, but what isn't.
