[The Hub]

[It's a boring dream by Torchwood standards, an interesting one of your work doesn't consist of a top secret science fiction bunker, complete with mysterious alien gadgets lying everywhere, incomprehensible computer programs running on most of the screens and a pteranodon nesting high up near the roof and occasionally squawking to herself.

As for Ianto he's not doing anything as exciting as his surroundings. He's just cleaning up at the end of the day, throwing away empty pizza boxes ordered under the name of Torchwood, washing coffee mugs, dusting off keyboards, putting away discarded firearms. Maybe he's dreaming about this because he organizes thing even in his sleep. Or maybe he just missed his old routine.]

	If this were real, if I didn't know you, I wouldn't have. [It makes him feel guilty just to admit it but Spike's always been honest with him no matter how bad it is. [This just keeps getting worse.] That's what we do with the weevils. We don't usually lock them up like that. Sometimes they come above ground and attack people. When they do we intercept them, subdue them, tag them so we can monitor if they come back up and release them somewhere away from anyone they could hurt.

We would have tried to send you home if you fell through the Rift, as long as you weren't likely to hurt more people there. [But this is Torchwood so in all likelihood he would have escaped somehow, had a big messy confrontation and gotten shot. They're unfortunately predictable like that.]

This is just more of the same, the self-righteous cheating assholes that call themselves heroes and then dooms their victims to slow starvation. Dabbling with things you don't understand. If this is better, then what was Torchwood London like? ]

[He can feel the anger shaking through Spike's whole body through that contact as they step up into the main Hub. He pauses a moment, gives him time to take it all in. As large as the place is it's obvious this isn't a big operation. There are only two other people working here now and neither of them are here at the moment.

Once he's sure Spike has had time to get a good look at his new surroundings he turns, taking his other hand so he's holding both of them and facing him, looking serious and sad but, most importantly, honest.]

Then we'd try to find some sort of solution. Send you somewhere else, get in touch with your world to let them make the call, cryogenically freeze you until we can figure out a better option. Unless you're actively planning on destroying the world or attacking us. Then we'd fight back. We don't do that unless we have to, and we don't like doing it. I don't, anyway.

Spike has it in his head that he's such an idealistic hero, but if there's ever a time to realize that's not the case is now.] That's usually what ends up happening. [ Here's a thing about Spike: he hates idealistic heroes. They're the biggest liars out there, most of all to themselves. He may be a filthy murderer and he may cheat, lie and steal to get his way but he doesn't lie to himself. He doesn't play foul the way Angelus does, the way the Initiative did, the Defence Force. Some things are sacred. Death is one of them.

So maybe it'll come as a surprise when he finally relaxes, not fully but enough to be noticeable, enough to lean in and steal a kiss. Good. That's all he needed to know. ]

[It does surprise him, because no one ever reacts that way. Gwen is always the idealist, trying to find some solution where no one gets hurt. And Jack is the opposite, so convinced he has to always make the hard choice to the point where sometimes he can't see any other option. Ianto is somewhere in the middle, always hoping things will work out but rarely expecting them to.

He kisses him back, hardly the first time he's done that sort of thing here.]

We don't exist to be cruel, or to hurt anyone. We just do what we have to in order to protect people.

	Honesty has never been my strong point. [Which makes the fact that he used it here so much more important. He lets go of one hand but keeps a hold of the other as he steps back glancing around.] This is about it, really. I don't know. [He won't pretend he doesn't dream about the two of them, sometimes individually sometimes together. But right now he kind of likes having the place to the two of them. He feels like Spike is still a little volatile here and Jack might not be a good addition to that mix.]

Come on, we'll go take a look at his office so you can make comments about it.

[It's alright, Ianto is almost as nervous himself. He keeps worrying he'll have to justify Torchwood, and isn't sure that he can. He relaxes a bit in Jack's office, comforted by the familiarity of it all even if it is strange being here without him. In real life he might resist the idea of fooling around with Spike in here, in their place, but it's a dream and it doesn't feel as bad. He won't mention the bunker below their feet where Jack lives.]

Actually I'd say most of the Torchwood action happens in the SUV. We spend a lot of time driving around at high speeds. If you meant other kinds of magic, well, that happens all over the Hub, or at least in the parts we can get away with.

Perverts. [ It's half-hearted at best and he has a feeling that despite the bravado, he's about to cockblock himself in a dream. It's all good and well to talk about it, but he doesn't belong here. They'd bag and tag him here. Ianto confirmed as much. ]

Don't know what I expected. Between you and Jack and Gwen, I suppose this is exactly what it should be. [ A bit shit. ]

[Maybe they would. Maybe it's stills turn this dream will take. He hopes not. That comment gets a slightly sad smile out of him, a quick glance through the glass walls to one particular work station.]

Tosh kept things running smoothly. More than we give her credit for. Owen, too, in his own way. [They were a team and now half that team is gone. It's hard to pick up and keep going from there.]

[Its been almost a year now. It still hurts, but it will always hurt just like everything else about Torchwood. He can live with it. It still feels good to lean back in his arms, taking a long look out over the empty base he doesn't think he'll ever see again. Even if he does get sent back it's just a few more months until it's gone, along with everything else including him. Maybe it's for the best. Torchwood has always been something of a necessary evil.

He turns around in Spike's arms, draping his own around his neck and changing the subject with a practiced ease.] I can't believe you've resided sitting at Jack's desk and putting your boots up on it or something like that for so long.

Well, now you've just gone and ruined it.

[ Not really. It felt pretty ruined from the start. The association he has with places like this, the association he has with this place in particular, including what it'll do to Ianto but also what kind of people it spits out. It's not great, none of it. A proper boner killer, as nice as the idea was to bang on Jack's desk on the off chance he'd know about it.

If this is a dream, then is this really where you want to spend it? At work?

[No, there was never going to be much of a mood here. Even without the cell and the similarities to what's been done to him in his own world this has always been his and Jack's place. They were never going to have much luck with romance in this place.]

I don't really go anywhere else back home. [He admits with a sheepish laugh. His apartment and the Hub. That's the extent of it. Not much of a social life.] I know a place with a good view though. Come on.
