[Day 367 | Video]

[Max, given his choice about things, would leave well-enough alone, avoid the network and the other inmates entirely, and keep himself from getting dragged into anything at all, because he knows it's bound to happen. Always does.

Of course, if Max had his way about things, he wouldn't be here at all, despite his profound conviction that it's probably what he deserves. A cop-turned-vigilante? It's been a long time since there's been anything resembling real civilization in the wasteland, but he can remember clear enough what it was like, before everything.

Regardless, he doesn't have his way of things, and he can begrudgingly move along to get along, and can even (he hopes) keep himself out of everything by limiting contact as much as possible. And this - this network - it's impersonal. It keeps him separated even while seeking an answer to a question, so that's better than nothing.

But it takes him a long while after arriving to get around to using it. He's still in prison-orange (he's got nothing else), and he's still dirty from the desert; oil and blood and dirt smeared on his face, a half-healed crossbow bolt wound on his forehead, and numerous scars visible through his badly shorn hair. His leathers are missing. His supplies are missing, right down to his canteen. It's not the lowest he's been in recent memory, though it comes pretty close. Most importantly, however:]

Where can I find a leg brace.

[His voice is low, rough, accent declaring he is, indeed, from Australia - or what's left of it, though softened over time as borders have blurred. The kind of voice that says it's not used very often. And that's all he offers in way of greeting. He's not giving his name, and he doesn't want to know anyone else's.]

[ Her grumpy-guy senses are tingling hard enough that she'd be halfway through baking a welcome pie if answering the call wasn't that much more important. She has a soft spot for bothering them, it seems, and he might just be the neediest grumpy guy she's seen during the six months she's been here.

Clean, bright mood, well-dressed, Chuck might just be his complete opposite. Hi. ]

They might be able to help you at the clinic, unless you want to go to the hospital — it's full of bots, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you're into the cold, metallic touch.

Are you hurt?

[Things that have already startled him completely: The absolute ease with which he gets an answer. He's used to having to barter, or wheedle, or downright threaten, to get any sort of answer for anything at all, because common basic decency just isn't a thing and information is just as valuable as scrap and guzzoline. If he looks surprised at that...Well. That's why.

The second is how clean she is. Baths stopped being popular right around the time the sea withdrew from shore and people went to war with each other just to have enough to keep from dying.]

I just need the brace. No doctors.

[Doctors. There's a word he's neither heard nor used in ages. The second question he simply ignores, and leaves it at that.]

[ Congratulations for getting in touch with the most overbearingly helpful and positive person in the dome, in that case. Good job. ]

Well... I can't say I've seen anything like that in the stores, so I still think the clinic is your best bet. My husband works there — he can be a character, but if you want I can tell him to play nice. Unless you want to deal with the wardens and ask for a brace at the kiosk but I'd highly recommend against it. They're jerks.

Or ask for Alex Karev. He might be more your speed.

[That famous Max luck strikes again.]

And why's that.

[Color him stupidly curious, alright. He's fairly sure 'his speed' and whatever anyone thinks it might be are probably two painfully different things.]

[Kitty looks him over curiously before turning on the feed. He reminds her a little of home. Conditions weren't good for anyone except some of Apocalypse's elite, but they weren't the worst for her as an X-Man, but the refugees they were saving? They had less than nothing most of the time. Just trying to feed themselves and stay clothed. Hygiene and health fell to the wayside. Then again maybe this guy just had a rough night in Vegas.]

The hospital would have them. [Her accent is American. Chicago specifically.] They'd be able to treat anything else too. Clinic can do the treating. I don't know if they have things like braces in stock there, but it's inmate run.

Can you walk?

[And...Already he's having entirely more contact than he's absolutely wanted already, not ten minutes into this.

For a time, he considers simply not responding. He hasn't survived as long as he has by answering questions that could most definitely compromise himself, and he's not about to start now just because there's plenty of water and no one seems to be killing each other over a few bullets that may or may not be duds.]

I'm just looking for the brace; I'm fine. [Fine, of course, being relative in this situation.]

Fine like your leg is just a little stiff or fine like it's been gnawed off by a kangaroo [they totally do that] but you're kind of a loner so it's not okay for some random girl to help you?

[Kangaroos really did not do that. Ate good, though; until they were all gone, anyway.]

Fine as in fine.

[Follow up question. This is probably the most he's talked in weeks.]

What about anything like a scrap yard. Somewhere that might have hinges.

[She's not going to scour the place looking for him to see if he needs crutches or something in the meantime so she accepts the "fine" this time around.]

To make your own or something else? [She doesn't really wait for an answer.] There are various stores in the sectors. You'll probably have to repurpose something, but I'm sure there are hinges. Other things too. Everything's free.

Among other things.

[But the real kicker is the word free. Nothing's free. Ever.]

So what's the catch.

[Because there clearly has to be one. Okay, sure they're in a prison, he's fairly clear on that part. But last he could remember before the world burned, prisons didn't disguise themselves as five star resorts where things were free.]

Games.

[He actually doesn't even think he has to ask, because given the situation he's got a good idea of what that means, and yet here he goes anyway.

Truthfully, he probably should have just left thing network alone, because hadn't he said he'll get dragged into things? He did, and here's that red flag.]

All sorts.

Sometimes it's physically threatening—a flood, dinosaurs, [Yes, she really just said dinosaurs] or limited resources. A lot of times it's mental though. Changing memories around, making it impossible to lie, adjusting emotions. Or the more random ones like being forced to kiss people or waking up in someone else's body or as an animal.

Which probably makes it sound like I've lost my mind, but give it a few days. Actually, probably tomorrow or the next day. [There isn't a solid pattern, but it usually times out to having two to three days off so she's going with that.]

And you just let it happen.

[There's no judgement in that. Sometimes people fought back, sometimes they didn't, and it's none of his business nor his place to judge all the way around.

So dinosaurs are new, he'll give it that, but it's not the first time he's seem manipulation on a wide-scale - more than once, actually - and sooner or later, people eventually crack, or they fight back.

He's just curious as to where this place stands in that.]

[Dryly.] That's flattering that you just met me and you already think I'm extremely powerful, but also a psychopath. I'll take the bad with the good I guess.

[She takes out a cigarette for this conversation. Newbies. If she reads a bit too much into his words it's because she's come across quite a few people who show up and act like what's been done before them isn't enough and that they would have done it better. They're still here too now.]

All of you, not you specifically.

[Tactfully keeping his own opinion out that, thank you. Not that he's really formed much of one, except that everyone here likes to talk entirely too much, and that he hasn't seen so much...Cheerfulness isn't the right word, but it's the best he's got - in a very long time.

But it at least says they're at the make or break point, which means he should probably shut this fairly one-sided conversation down.]

Easy fixes don't exist. But that's a start.

Our clinic offers a wide variety in many fashionable styles and color choices. For you I'm thinking sequins, or maybe something in blue. [His voice and tone is the kind that is deliberately trying to be obnoxious while at the same time pretending he's not doing that but also being helpful and maybe not wanting to be too terrible to the dirty bleeding new person. Or maybe that's reading too much into it and he's just being annoying. He pans the camera around his current clinic surroundings and makes a ta-da! sort of gesture. Look at all our amazing available medical equipment, come on down for great savings!]

[There's always that one guy.

But, smartass or not, that view of the clinic is very helpful. He's not going to step one foot into it, of course - especially not right now - but it's helpful. For future reference.

Either way, how do you get under the skin of someone who couldn't care less about sequins or color, as long as it'll shore up a wobbly knee? That is the question.]

What have you got in leather.

[But there's something to be said for the absolute ease with the way he's even being shown things, so he simply...Plays along, though his tone is fairly flat.

Worse comes to worse, there has to be some sort of scrap around here somewhere.]

So she sets up her own video call. There's nothing much to note about her though the vampire bite scar on her neck is noticeable. She quit trying to hide it.]

I think a lot of us would rather do things by ourselves, but Phanan and Karev are good at their profession. However, if you'd really rather not work with them [Because she can see how they might leave a bad taste in someone's mouth,] I can see what I can do get you the brace.
