At some point he had fallen asleep. The cold of the wooden floor beneath him within the 'apartment' as it was called, hardly compared to the cold dirt of the ground outside. And so even without sleeping in his new bedroom it was more comfortable than his many nights beneath the stars. Adventure and travel was exciting and stirred his blood, but there were definite downfalls. The lack of an inn, as well as a bed and pillows mainly. While he had adjusted out of necessity it was hardly comfortable.

His priority was the princess. And that hadn't changed simply due to a new location. With both Hak, Jae-Ha, and Shin-Ah gone, that left Kija as the primary defender. Zeno was also a dragon, but hardly a warrior and Kaya was new to the group. Her protection now rested within his hands and he was bound and determined to make sure that when they returned to the others not a single hair upon her sacred head would be disturbed.

Which was why he had insisted upon sleeping outside of her bedroom.

All of them were being held prisoner. Despite the magic and convenience of their new location, he knew better than to treat a gilded cage as anything other than a gilded cage. And so it was that after he gathered a pillow and a blanket from his own room, he set up for the night outside of her door upon the floor. A quick check for bugs revealed none- at least none that he had noticed. Back against the wall, his pillow and blanket in hand he fell asleep slumped forward like that.

That had been during the night. How he awoke was quite different.

Cheeks flushed so red that they burned, Kija felt a strangled sound barely cut off from inside his throat. To his right rested Zeno, practically sprawled upon him, mouth agap as he drooled unceremoniously upon Kija's orange suit. And against him rested Kaya, slightly more peaceful looking in appearance. To be honest, it was nothing new, waking up beside the other dragon. They all slept in tight quarters, and he was used to it by now. No. What caused his heart to beat so quickly he feared for his life was the woman pressed up against his opposite side, peacefully asleep against his shoulder; the princess.

Stiff as a board, Kija could barely breathe. When had they all joined him? And w-w-why was the princess pressed so warmly against him!? Every hair upon his body stood on end like a scared cat, and he felt completely too aware of her presence in a way that he hoped only had to do with his being her dragon. The soft weight of her warm body rested peacefully against him, oblivious to the way he felt frozen to the spot. To sleep so near her like this was wrong! She was his master, and he had no right, and couldn't believe that it wasn't until now that he had awoken. But worse was his dilemma.

He couldn't move without waking her and the others. Anguished and sure that he was going to die of the incurable disease Yoon had told him he was long suffering from, he remained ridged, breath caught within his chest. His pulse raced and his ears rang as they pounded with blood. Surely this was the power of King Hiryuu, to cause him to feel such a way. And yet she laid there so innocently, unaware of the way that she made his blood pound and his dragon claw ache. There was no hope that he would fall back to sleep by this point. All he could do was quietly wait.

Flushed, he swallowed thickly and quietly watched her. It was something that he rarely allowed himself to do for more than a moment. As she was right now, she seemed so defenseless. Not for the first time, he couldn't help but to wonder where all her strength came from. She was so small, her body petite. Looking at her like this, she seemed almost fragile, as though one touch would cause her to shatter within his hand. Softly, he curled his fingers and stared at his dragon claw. He was a weapon, meant to keep her safe. He was both happy and content with that. But he wondered why it made him ache sometimes, too. It wasn't like with Jae-Ha. Kija was proud to be a dragon warrior, and beyond honored to be able to serve beneath her.

'Don't you want to hug her with that arm of yours with all your might?' The words came back to him with horrifying clarity.

O-Of course not...! He internally sputtered. The image of Jae-Ha smirking appeared within his mind's eye and he clawed the image to pieces until it disappeared. Curse you, Jae-Ha! Saying such impure things! Now it was in his mind! That man always said whatever he wanted, no matter how inappropriate it was! But then, stuck here in the moment his mouth felt terribly dry. Outside of his village, most people acted repulsed by his dragon claw. A 'monster' they said, more often than not. It didn't really bother him. He was glad to possess the power to protect his master. He wondered, though, what she thought of it. Of its appearance, or if she would find the feel of his scales distasteful. Did she realize how important she was to all of them?

Her lips, gently parted within her sleep, looked so soft.

Even were my blood not strongly attached, I would never betray you, he thought as he silently watched her. Regardless of if she was or was not the reincarnation of King Hiryuu, which she claimed not to be true. He would still follow her. Even if his blood claimed otherwise. She was... someone precious. Someone who deserved only happiness in all things. And that had to be enough for him. His incredible, and beautiful master. Claw lifting, he gently reached out, and with the tenderest of touches softly brushed a scaled finger against her cheek.

The princess rested against Kija, her breathing even and undisturbed even by his touch. The night before they had decided on their living arrangements for now, come to this apartment and seeing how it had so many rooms split up: Zeno and Kaya moving to one room, while Yona and Kija moved into two of the others.

It had been alright at first, a sensible choice, yet Yona had found that she wasn't able to fall asleep like that. The bed was soft and warm, but she just couldn't feel comfortable, not like she had back in the days when she slept alone every night at the palace. During their travels she had grown much too used to having someone at her side, to listen to someone's breathing, the comfort of someone's company putting her at ease. At first that someone had been Hak, then Yoon and even though neither of them were with her right now she had found it hard to go back to sleeping by herself and left her room, seeking out the others. Maybe, she had thought, one of them is still awake and willing to talk for a bit, just long enough for her to get too tired to stay awake.

However, that was not necessary, as it had turned out, since her eyes fell on Kija the instance she carefully opened her door and stepped outside. The sight had brought a smile to her face, as she watched Kija breathe, already in deep slumber. Her personal watchdog, who stubbornly refused to leave her side. Knowing him, she understood that he wanted to make up for Hak, Shin-Ah and Jae-Ha's absence, by watching her even more closely and making sure that no potential threats this place might hold would be able to hurt her. A slant of light illuminated Kija's silver hair as his chest rose and fell with every breath. Yona couldn't help but think he was beautiful. Her fingers touched his hair, brushing it aside without disturbing his sleep. He was precious to her, just like each and every one of the others and a warmth spread inside of her at the sight of her comrade, her friend. Smiling at him once more, she changed her plans, heading back into her room to retrieve her own pillow and blanket and settled down next to him. In no time at all, soothed by the sound of Kija's breathing, Yona was fast asleep, her head resting on the White Dragon's shoulder.

And hours later now, she still slept peacefully, oblivious to Kija watching her and thinking about her like this.

Zeno found that he could fall asleep anywhere. Sometimes he had to. Sometimes he had nothing but the clothes on his back and he'd been forced to sleep on the ground without a blanket or pillow or a sleep roll to make himself comfortable. Or there were times when things were good and he could afford a room at an inn somewhere with soft beds and warmth to share. Very rare were the times when he found someone to sleep next to. Friends or random strangers or whatever.

Recently he's found himself in the company of the other dragons and others. It was nice being able to settle himself right in the middle of the group no matter what their situation had been at the time.

Things have changed once again. There's less of them here but more space than they've had in a long while. While Zeno is all for sharing a bed with Kaya, he also knows that his two friends will be sleeping alone. As he settled down for the first time in a very long with his wife, Zeno couldn't help but look at the door separating him from the others.

Really, it hadn't been hard to convince Kaya to come out and join the sleeping party that had formed in the hallway. A strange new place with strange new things and strange new people was not anywhere anyone should have to be alone - especially on the first night. So he'd led the way out of their room only to discover that the princess had joined Kija on the floor.

Which had caused him to really smile before setting his pillow down on the other side of the tall man and therefore acting as a barrier between Kija and Kaya. Really, there's nothing he can do about how Kija will react to the princess being so close. And well, eventually his sleeping habits kick in and he does end up half lying on top of Kija and effectively pinning him down. Though his dragon brethren can certainly pick him up if so desired.

Try not to mind the drool of this sleeping companion.

One of them has to be alert even when they're sleeping and since Kija obviously slept through three different people settling down around him, it clearly isn't him. So despite the drool, Zeno is sleeping lightly and sensed movement from one of the two next to him.

His eyes shoot open only to watch Kija gently touch the Princess' cheek. After that he simply stared at the other dragon for a long minute.

"What is Hakuryuu doing?" A quiet whisper so as to not wake the girls.

It was only a light, simple touch. Pure but strangely brave for Kija considering who it was that rested against him. But the moment he heard the whispered voice beside him his claw retracted as though burned.

The color within his cheeks intensified as his heart exploded and he all but sputtered.

"I--I-I wasn't doing anything, I just-!" He just thought she looked peaceful in her sleep but he couldn't say that either! He flustered more as he stumbled over an explanation and whispered frantically. "I w-was only checking on her!" Why couldn't he speak without feeling more warm by the moment?

"More importantly what is everyone doing out here!?"

Had this been anyone but Kija and Shin-Ah - Zeno would have worried more about them sleeping next to the princess. But since it was, he just has the desire to tease the flustered dragon a little. As expected Kija pulled away pretty much instantly and has dissolved into stuttering.

"Hmmm? Is that all Hakuryuu was doing?" He moved to prop his head up on Kija's other shoulder with a hand beneath his chin to prevent the other from being poked. "Cause to Zeno it looked like Hakuryuu was poking her."

Well, that's not what it looked like but he'll spare Kija any words that might seriously give him a heart attack.

At that question, Zeno can't help but grin hugely. "Zeno thought the others might get lonely sleeping alone! So here's Zeno. And Kaya came too. Miss must have had the same idea too because she was already here when Zeno and Kaya came out."

"I was not-!" He couldn't say what he was doing, but he only meant it innocently! He would never do anything inappropriate to the princess. In fact that he was asleep here with her against him was so inappropriate and disrespectful to her.

. . . Except that she had been the one to come out and rest against him. He tried to move on from that.

"I am not lonely." Maybe it was different after so long, but it wasn't as though he hadn't slept alone every night back within Hakuryuu Village.

". . . But perhaps the princess was." But next to him? S-Surely with Miss Kaya it would have been better. Except that she was Zeno's wife...

He frowned. For her, this was her first time without her longest friend. Although it pained him to admit, he spoke quietly. "This is her first time separated from Hak. While I do not think she would show it to us, she probably... is pained without him here."

The murmurs Kija and Zeno exchanged were quiet, but still the continued noise slowly had Yona emerge from the world of fitful slumber and dreams. Her head was still half-leaning on Kija, half-held aloft by the pillow she pressed to her chest like a much too large teddy bear.

While her eyes were still sealed shut, heavy with sleep, her ears had come to quicker and she was thus able to follow some of their conversation. Kija's words about loneliness and missing Hak rang true in her ears. She hadn't thought about it before going to sleep, not really, maybe unconsciously pushed it to the back of her mind, but she still knew that it had been a part of why she had wanted to be closer to everyone who still was here. With her body feeling Kija's warmth, there had been a constant reassurance of his continued presence and it had calmed her. It still did now.

The fact that Zeno and Kaya had joined them as well warmed her, made her feel even closer to everyone than she already had. As unexpected as it may have been to learn that Zeno was married, Yona knew that she could trust the shy girl just as much as Zeno and she looked forward to getting to know her better during their time here, no matter how long it would be.

And as for Hak ... "I am not pained, Kija", she said, her voice still tired and quiet. As she spoke her eyes opened and she moved to rub the sleep from them, while looking at the boys with a small smile on her face. It was to reassure her just as much as them, but still it wasn't a lie.

"I miss Hak, just like I miss Yoon and Shin-Ah, Jae-Ha and Ao. But I know that we will see them again, if we are just patient and don't give up." She could feel it in her heart, without any uncertainty. Her dearest friends, she would be with them shortly, she just knew it. This made it a lot easier to brush any thought of missing Hak in particular aside.

Her smile widened a little as she looked at both of her dragons again, truly happy to be able to wake up next to them like this. "Good morning."

The soft, melodic sound of her voice took Kija by surprise. Both blue eyes widened and he felt himself straighten further as his breath caught somewhere within the back of his throat. Sleepy and dazed, she looked breathless even with her cheeks gently flushed as she rubbed her eyes and blinked up at him. The strength and conviction behind her words was so innocently stated, but didn't waver.

She was incredible.

And also close. Really very truly incredibly close. He could feel the warmth of her against him, and as she glanced up to him with a tired smile and a good morning, he felt himself practically freeze.

"P-P-Princess. Good morning...."

He meant to articulate more, but could barely form a sentence. He was dizzy and here he was only sitting upon the ground. It was heart palpitations all over again.

Yona wasn't affected by the closeness of Kija's body and face at all, having grown much to used to wake up next to someone, though it was mostly Yoon. His stuttering wasn't anything too out of the ordinary either, but he too looked flushed and seemed to swoon slightly even when partially propped up against the wall.

"Are you okay, Kija?" she asked, looking at him even more closely. If only Yoon was there to check any illnesses. "Maybe you aren't feeling well because we are so far away from Kouka." And with that Hiryuu Castle. Maybe that was the reason he didn't look too good? Zeno had not been affected like the others before, so there wasn't exactly any way to prove her theory but ...

Then her stomach decided on that exact moment to make some noise, which left her own cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "M-Maybe we should wake Kaya and have some breakfast?" Yoon wasn't there to feed them and Yona honestly had no idea where they would get food from, but she was sure they could figure out something together. Maybe the device they called communicator would be able to help? They had all taken them off as they didn't need them to speak among themselves anyway, but its map was bound to come in handy.
