Day 363 - Open Video/Action
[Video]

[The video opens on a man sitting squarely in view, his bearing better suited to someone awaiting a big job interview than a newly incarcerated prisoner.]

Hello, MarinaNova Asylum. My name is Felix Gaeta. I'd say that it's a pleasure to join your ranks, but I don't want to start off on a lie.

I've been over the information I was provided with on arrival and it left a number of things unanswered. Namely... [a pause to pick up a notepad] ...is all of this really virtual, and, if so, does anyone know where our bodies are?

Do you have a leader or any kind of civilian government?

Is everything here actually free for the taking, or are there strings attached?

[He pauses again, flips a couple of pages, and sighs.]

Maybe this is a better question: do you have an archive or some other collection of information that hasn't been provided by the wardens? No one wants me to go through all of these, including me.

[And scene.]

[Action]

[Gaeta can be found at the library—taking notes, likely—or at any of the many eateries in Marina, admiring the sheer selection available. He won't go out of his way to be friendly.]

[She tensed some at the initial statement, thinking he means Reid. Not that it wouldn't still be a fair point, but not one she'd be willing to let a stranger make lightly.] I don't know if me being cranky all the time is the right way to go back into it.

[Oops. While giving up relationships wholesale does have its pros, that isn't a recommendation he'd make to a stranger. Or to a friend. Or to himself.] No... symbolic gestures aren't worth crankiness.

I hope it goes well for you, anyway. You seem like you could use a win.

Thanks? [She looks over.] Do I seem that deep into losing? [That you could pick up in it already.]

Your home was destroyed, you said that you're as good as dead where you're from, and you've been in a prison for almost a year, so yes, you do.

Okay, when you put it that way it sounds bad. It hasn't all been bad.

Tell me about something good. [It's not a challenge. He really does want to hear about how things can go well for someone with no home and no future. You know, for a friend.]

I...turned twenty recently. People—friends—threw me a birthday party. A lot of them. [She has a lot of people who care about her here. All kinds of people. Humans too. They don't just fear her.]

You've got me; that does sound good. You have a lot of friends here?

More than I expected. [It's all kind of relative, right?]

How many did you expect?

Originally? None. [Which isn't so much her being sad for herself as she thought she'd only ever be able to be friends with other mutants.]

You're not that terrible. [By which he means Kitty's one of the best people he's met in a long while and she really needs to have higher expectations.]

[She shakes her head.] The fear and resentment of people like me back home is just...really high. [It still hurts even if you understand it.] I could save someone's life and be spit on for it. I wasn't expecting friends unless there were other mutants.

[Although she has mentioned war and the destruction of cities, she hasn't gotten into specifics. She hasn't said that she's anything other than human.]

What's a mutant? [There's a note of suspicion, but no fear. It's a little late to be afraid.]

[She doesn't appreciate the suspicion, Gaeta. That's not how you treat someone who took your pizza virginity.] People born with an X-gene in our DNA. It can mean a lot of different things, but usually it means some kind of ability manifests at puberty.

[It's an involuntary reflex!]

And you have one of these abilities? [Is he asking too many questions?]

I do. [No. Questions are fine. He'll probably need to ask another one now.]

[He instinctively brings his arms up to defend himself. It's difficult to say what surprises him more—her taking a swing at him, or her arm passing right through.] Frak! Some warning, please.

People who don't sound suspicious about it first get a warning. [She brings her hands back to herself, putting them in her pockets.]

And that's supposed to discourage me from being suspicious in the future? [He's irritated, but he makes a concentrated effort to reign in his annoyance and understand where she's coming from.] Fear and resentment... okay. I understand why you'd react poorly to suspicion when you tell someone what you are. Believe me, I get that. I'm sorry.

[She takes a deeper, cleansing breath. He's pretty good at pulling back after a slip and she can be too. That was childish of her. She nods.] And no more surprise penetration. [The sorry is on the tip of her tongue but doesn't quite make it to the land of hearing.]

Surprise penetration... you do have a way with words. [And, apologetically:] Look, between the cylons and the humans who still hate me for what they think I did, I've had to be suspicious. I know you don't deserve that.

[She really does. She has great words. The best words. She also appreciates how much he's trying here. She was nowhere close to this understanding, accepting, or trusting when she arrived so she shouldn't be hard on him. Being hard on people is just kind of an old default that likes to kick in sometimes.] You know what's going to smooth all of this over really well?
