Day 363 - Open Video/Action
[Video]

[The video opens on a man sitting squarely in view, his bearing better suited to someone awaiting a big job interview than a newly incarcerated prisoner.]

Hello, MarinaNova Asylum. My name is Felix Gaeta. I'd say that it's a pleasure to join your ranks, but I don't want to start off on a lie.

I've been over the information I was provided with on arrival and it left a number of things unanswered. Namely... [a pause to pick up a notepad] ...is all of this really virtual, and, if so, does anyone know where our bodies are?

Do you have a leader or any kind of civilian government?

Is everything here actually free for the taking, or are there strings attached?

[He pauses again, flips a couple of pages, and sighs.]

Maybe this is a better question: do you have an archive or some other collection of information that hasn't been provided by the wardens? No one wants me to go through all of these, including me.

[And scene.]

[Action]

[Gaeta can be found at the library—taking notes, likely—or at any of the many eateries in Marina, admiring the sheer selection available. He won't go out of his way to be friendly.]

Yes, past tense. It was a large moon. Picon and the other eleven colonies were destroyed three years ago. [It's surprisingly easy to talk about if he doesn't think about the human cost.] We're looking for Earth.

[That gets a sympathetic look.] I'm sorry.

Is Earth missing?

[He shrugs because there's really no better way to deal with the destruction of the vast majority of humanity than to try to minimize the loss.]

That depends on who you ask. According to the scrolls, it's the home of the lost Thirteenth Tribe. Honestly, I thought it was a myth until I got here.

Huh. Well, I'm from Earth, and I've never heard about any of that. But people here are also from different realities, so that doesn't really mean anything. I should be able to show you some star charts for where Earth is though.

No one else from Earth know that they're from the lost Thirteenth Tribe of Kobol, either. [Like she said, it doesn't mean anything.

He's genuinely touched by her offer to show him some star charts.]
Would you? I've taken over the project to find Earth and all I have to work off of are cryptic scriptures and my predecessor's more cryptic notes.

Not a problem. I can't promise you'll recognize anything surrounding them. No idea how far out you are, but it might help out someday.

Sounds like a pretty big project. [Considering the circumstances.] What's your position?

Anything would be more helpful than references to twelve brothers and the blinking eyes of great lions.

It would be a bigger project if we were relying on science instead of prophecy. [He shakes his head, getting frustrated and tired just thinking about what he needs to get back to.] Who knows. Just in the last month, I've been a presidential advisor, a traitor to humanity, head navigator, senior officer of the watch, and catch-all scientist. When I go back, I figure it's time to shoot for admiral.

There's a constellation named after a lion, but as far as I know stars don't do a lot of blinking.

[But these other things he lists seem more important right now. Especially with traitor to humanity in the list. Maybe it should make her wary, but instead she's curious. There may even be sympathy lurking around the edges because she doubts he's admitting an actual betrayal among his other accomplishments.]

Might as well. Hopefully it comes with a big hat. For what it's worth I'd vote science over prophecy too.

[As far as he's concerned, there was no actual betrayal, regardless of what the fleet and the wardens seem to think. Probably something he shouldn't have even mentioned, but it's a raw wound.]

No big hat. I hear the cabin's nice, though. [She gets a smile.] When you're not heading up your Defense Force and answering questions about MarinaNova in your sleep, what do you do with yourself, Kitty? Are you a scientist?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]kitty_has_claws

[That makes her smile in return. Mistaken or guessed for a scientist is a pretty good thing in her book.] Not so much. I do teach a couple of technology classes at the school, but I'm all self taught myself. I spend time with people. Read. [Not to be confused with Reid.] Train. Sometimes I work on picking up a new language.

You must be sharp if you puzzle out technology and languages on your own. [Respect. She's got to be smarter than him, anyway.] Sounds like a well-rounded collection of pastimes.

Do I sound a little full of myself? [If anything she's usually a little self conscious about it because she had to leave school so young and is now BFFs with the resident prison geniuses.]

[Oh! And look, it's a robot with a tray full of pizza slices and two extra plates and silverware for them.]

Unless that was the most humble bragging I've ever heard, no.

[The robot is largely disregarded because it is bearing a magical array of foods. Gaeta is awed. It's so beautiful.]

So, start with whatever looks good. [She'll let him have first dibs on everything. They can always get more of something or cut it in half.]

You do have to try this one though. [Pointing her fork to the Chicago-style deep dish.]

Really? You want me to just... start eating?

[If she insists. He cuts off a piece of everything because it is so much food and he can't take all of any of them, paying particular attention to the deep dish.] Is this one special?

It's a wild and crazy idea I had one day while just staring at food. [She takes some of the halves he leaves to start with.] It was a regional dish from the city I grew up in. Chicago.

[He rolls his eyes at her even though, yeah, he totally deserves her sarcasm.] It was a regional dish? Did something happen to Chicago?

[As he tries this regional dish with the air of someone who is performing a detailed analysis on a sample.]

[She just smiles back at the eye roll. All in good fun. It fades though. She doesn't mind talking about it, but it isn't really something she can smile through.]

It was culled. Destroyed. And then just to add insult to injury it got attacked again because people were trying to live in the ruins.

Yeah, well, most of home is toast anyway. [Not that it really made it matter less.]

What do you think of the pizza?

[info]didwhaticould

[He wants to ask what happened—maybe tell her how the Colonies fell, since it can be nice to know that you're not the only person who made it through an apocalypse—but they just met and there's pizza.]

It's amazing. I forgot what cheese and tomatoes tasted like, but I don't think they were this good together before. [It's all so good. He'll skip the pizza with the anchovies, but everything else? Everything else is magical.]

[Maybe he'll stick around and there'll be time for the depressing bonding. Pizza bonding is far superior. Or maybe far supreme?]

And you doubted me.

[Well punned.]

I kept my expectations reasonable so they would be either met or exceeded. It had nothing to do with you.

So calculating in your meal options. You must be a hell of a chess player.

I'm sure this will come as a shock, but I don't know what chess is. I'll just assume you meant that as a compliment.
