Day 363 - Open Video/Action
[Video]

[The video opens on a man sitting squarely in view, his bearing better suited to someone awaiting a big job interview than a newly incarcerated prisoner.]

Hello, MarinaNova Asylum. My name is Felix Gaeta. I'd say that it's a pleasure to join your ranks, but I don't want to start off on a lie.

I've been over the information I was provided with on arrival and it left a number of things unanswered. Namely... [a pause to pick up a notepad] ...is all of this really virtual, and, if so, does anyone know where our bodies are?

Do you have a leader or any kind of civilian government?

Is everything here actually free for the taking, or are there strings attached?

[He pauses again, flips a couple of pages, and sighs.]

Maybe this is a better question: do you have an archive or some other collection of information that hasn't been provided by the wardens? No one wants me to go through all of these, including me.

[And scene.]

[Action]

[Gaeta can be found at the library—taking notes, likely—or at any of the many eateries in Marina, admiring the sheer selection available. He won't go out of his way to be friendly.]

I don't know if that was a test, but you definitely passed. [She might just take him for ice cream afterward. Rocky Road.]

You know what it is. Does that mean they have it here? [If not, this test was cruel.]

Hey, eye on the prize. Pizza first. If you're good I'll take you for dessert. [As in chocolate, not letting you fall in love.]

[Um, chocolate is preferable to falling in love, excuse you.]

You've known me for half an hour and you're already calling my virtuousness into question.

[Of course it is, but you don't have to call it out like that.]

Can you think of a better time to doubt someone than when you barely know them? I mean except in cases of vicious betrayal.

[Damn, Kitty. Holocausts, vicious betrayal... it's like you're trying to make him think about all the worst things that have ever happened. This time, though, he manages to keep his negative reaction limited to looking down and crossing his arms protectively.]

I don't know. I like the idea of assuming that strangers mean well until they prove otherwise. [Likes the idea. Doesn't necessarily subscribe to it.]

[She notices the shift in body language. You too, bro?]

If I'd done that at home I'd have died. [A lot faster than she actually did.] Here? Well, here I'm taking you for pizza so it can't be all bad.

The place is right there. [nodding forward.]

[Eventually they should start a support group for apocalypse survivors with trust issues and questionable taste in men.]

Well... it's better in theory than in practice. [Saying "same" would have been awkward and too revealing.] Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt.

[Now lead him to pizza.]

[Already two people feels like a lot for that particular group. Their life choices should be questioned.]

[She even opens the door for him because she's a lady and she decided not to scare him by ignoring the door.]

We can order by the slice so you can try different things.

[Ah, chivalry is not dead in this universe. Thank you for not breaking the laws of physics as he knows them just yet.]

My mind is already boggled by the options. [No, seriously. There's more than one option. That's a lot.] What do you suggest? I'm partial to anything that isn't freeze-dried or reconstituted.

You're in luck. It all tastes fresh here.

[A little bot comes up to their table, ready to take their order.] I'll just get a variety of things. We can always take the leftovers home. [Separate homes. That wasn't an invitation to move in. Looking at the bot she starts listing things off by the slice getting thin, thick, and deep dish options. A simple pepperoni, a supreme, all cheese, all veggie, hawaiian, bbq chicken, and a couple of other things just to round it out.]

Fresh food. [He can't even believe that's a thing. He's so looking forward to it, in fact, that he regards the service bot with suspicion instead of blatant fear.]

I don't know what half the things you requested are.

Then it will be new and exciting and hopefully not too much for you digestive system.

So, tell me about yourself, Felix Gaeta, who is used to freeze-dried or reconstituted food and is deeply interested in governmental bodies and suspicious of military operations and our robot overlords. [Not that she blames him for that last bit.] I'm also guessing well educated with an interest in research and information. Maybe from a space station? [It would explain the food.]

My digestive system is prepared for an adventure.

[He doesn't like knowing that he's revealed so much to her so quickly, but she seems genuinely interested. That's different. Nice.] You're wrong about the space station, but other than that, you've figured me out. What's left to tell?

[She was prison married to a FBI profiler and one of his best students. It would be sad if she learned nothing. Besides, she figures she's given a lot more answers than she's gotten. True, they were about the place more than herself, but when is she ever really shy about sharing personal details?]

Well, if not a space station then what are we talking?

[She has done her share of question-answering. It's only polite for Felix to do the same.]

I'm from a battlestar—one of the Colonial Fleet's military spaceships. [He's not being as tight-lipped about this as he should be. It hardly matters what he says in a virtual prison dome, right?] It wasn't meant to be home. Before that, I was from Picon.

Is Picon a planet? [Regardless it's not a name she's familiar with and then there's a pause.] Should I be using past tense? [There must be some reason they're using a spaceship as home.]

[info]didwhaticould
2016-02-29 06:51 am UTC (link)
Yes, past tense. It was a large moon. Picon and the other eleven colonies were destroyed three years ago. [It's surprisingly easy to talk about if he doesn't think about the human cost.] We're looking for Earth.

[He shrugs because there's really no better way to deal with the destruction of the vast majority of humanity than to try to minimize the loss.]

That depends on who you ask. According to the scrolls, it's the home of the lost Thirteenth Tribe. Honestly, I thought it was a myth until I got here.

[info]kitty_has_claws

Huh. Well, I'm from Earth, and I've never heard about any of that. But people here are also from different realities, so that doesn't really mean anything. I should be able to show you some star charts for where Earth is though.

[info]didwhaticould

No one else from Earth know that they're from the lost Thirteenth Tribe of Kobol, either. [Like she said, it doesn't mean anything.

He's genuinely touched by her offer to show him some star charts.]
Would you? I've taken over the project to find Earth and all I have to work off of are cryptic scriptures and my predecessor's more cryptic notes.

Not a problem. I can't promise you'll recognize anything surrounding them. No idea how far out you are, but it might help out someday.

Sounds like a pretty big project. [Considering the circumstances.] What's your position?

Anything would be more helpful than references to twelve brothers and the blinking eyes of great lions.

It would be a bigger project if we were relying on science instead of prophecy. [He shakes his head, getting frustrated and tired just thinking about what he needs to get back to.] Who knows. Just in the last month, I've been a presidential advisor, a traitor to humanity, head navigator, senior officer of the watch, and catch-all scientist. When I go back, I figure it's time to shoot for admiral.

[info]kitty_has_claws

There's a constellation named after a lion, but as far as I know stars don't do a lot of blinking.

[But these other things he lists seem more important right now. Especially with traitor to humanity in the list. Maybe it should make her wary, but instead she's curious. There may even be sympathy lurking around the edges because she doubts he's admitting an actual betrayal among his other accomplishments.]

Might as well. Hopefully it comes with a big hat. For what it's worth I'd vote science over prophecy too.
