Day 363 - Open Video/Action
[Video]

[The video opens on a man sitting squarely in view, his bearing better suited to someone awaiting a big job interview than a newly incarcerated prisoner.]

Hello, MarinaNova Asylum. My name is Felix Gaeta. I'd say that it's a pleasure to join your ranks, but I don't want to start off on a lie.

I've been over the information I was provided with on arrival and it left a number of things unanswered. Namely... [a pause to pick up a notepad] ...is all of this really virtual, and, if so, does anyone know where our bodies are?

Do you have a leader or any kind of civilian government?

Is everything here actually free for the taking, or are there strings attached?

[He pauses again, flips a couple of pages, and sighs.]

Maybe this is a better question: do you have an archive or some other collection of information that hasn't been provided by the wardens? No one wants me to go through all of these, including me.

[And scene.]

[Action]

[Gaeta can be found at the library—taking notes, likely—or at any of the many eateries in Marina, admiring the sheer selection available. He won't go out of his way to be friendly.]

In the most delightful way, though?

Thanks, Reid. [That's the polite way to respond when someone welcomes you to prison, right? He doesn't know.]

I do have questions, actually. Can you elaborate on this... virtual reality claim?

Sure. [ Walking wikipedia, ahoy! ] How familiar are you with the concept?

Not very, unfortunately. Holobanding and other applied virtual technologies went out of fashion decades before the Fall... there wasn't much to learn. [One downside of living in a society that pulled away from technology once it realized how little it could be controlled.] Fill me in?

[ How come he's always the one explaining things, even to people who are from the far future compared to him? Some things just never change. ]

Okay so... the idea of a virtual reality is to create a facsimile of a real environment, usually through our visual perception. In my world, it's gone as far as interactive environments but it's nowhere near as advanced as what we're allegedly experiencing here. This is a full emersion, engaging all the senses and tapping into our perception of reality.

[Or is Gaeta from far in Reid's past? BSG is a mysterious universe! But no, yes Reid, that's what you get for being the resident nerd.]

Allegedly. You don't believe it's true?

[ So far back that the universe has reformed? ]

I don't know. There are some signs that point to it being true, but the problem is that the only proof we have rely on our perception and that can be fooled. I'm sure you understand the problem here.

[Well. Only, like, 150,000 years.]

I do. [And he doesn't like it.] And I'll admit that a virtual reality sounds more plausible than an actual underwater dome with unlimited resources and frequent environmental changes. More difficult to escape, too.

[ That's not how history works. ]

Yeah... yeah, there is that. [ He sighs. ] There have been instances when we've woken up in what can only be our real bodies, so maybe triggering an awakening would be a way out, but we still need to find a way back home from there.

[No. No, it is not.]

Is it possible that these awakenings take us to another, just as inescapable virtual reality?

Or maybe none of this is real--any of it. Maybe it's a dream or a hallucination, or maybe we're all dead.

That's just the thing, isn't it? We can't tell. Maybe you're right, maybe we are dead. There's enough people here taken right before their death for that to hold some credibility.

This isn't exactly how I pictured the Elysium Fields. [Sigh.] Whatever this place is, thank you for the information, Reid.

There is one other thing, if you have time. [There are a hundred other things. Most of them, unlike this one, can wait.] Are any of the machines wandering around dangerous?

It, ah... it depends. As long as you don't provoke them, they won't do anything to you. I'd advise you to not attack them or try to pick them apart. Messing with restricted areas like the kiosk seem to aggravate them too.

If they do, I've never heard any reports of it. You should be safe.

I wasn't worried about my safety [he was absolutely afraid that the trashbot would attack him] but thank you. You'll probably hear from me again.
