Day 363 - Open Video/Action
[Video]

[The video opens on a man sitting squarely in view, his bearing better suited to someone awaiting a big job interview than a newly incarcerated prisoner.]

Hello, MarinaNova Asylum. My name is Felix Gaeta. I'd say that it's a pleasure to join your ranks, but I don't want to start off on a lie.

I've been over the information I was provided with on arrival and it left a number of things unanswered. Namely... [a pause to pick up a notepad] ...is all of this really virtual, and, if so, does anyone know where our bodies are?

Do you have a leader or any kind of civilian government?

Is everything here actually free for the taking, or are there strings attached?

[He pauses again, flips a couple of pages, and sighs.]

Maybe this is a better question: do you have an archive or some other collection of information that hasn't been provided by the wardens? No one wants me to go through all of these, including me.

[And scene.]

[Action]

[Gaeta can be found at the library—taking notes, likely—or at any of the many eateries in Marina, admiring the sheer selection available. He won't go out of his way to be friendly.]

[Okay, wow. Not that he hasn't met people from versions of the far-flung future, but to hear the actual date is kind of jarring.]

Well, in 2010 it definitely exists.

What's a Cylon?

[Fun fact: Gaeta is from about 150,000 years in Sam's past. Not that either of them will ever know that.]

Either we're not from the same universe or the Fleet's going to be in for a surprise if it ever finds Earth.

Humanity's biggest mistake. [Too cryptic?] They're machines. Humanoid, sentient. They were trying to hunt us to extinction, but their priorities keep shifting.

[Things they'll never know! Wheee!]

I'm guessing you built them and then they decided to take over? [Plot of every sci fi ever?]

I wasn't involved personally, but yes, basically. [That guesswork is extremely suspicious, sir. He is going to make note of your uncanny knowledge of sci fi tropes.]

[Gaeta's wording also led him down that path, but the tropes help.]

You must love being in a prison run by AIs then.

Absolutely. [Not. There is some unshakeable low-key panic going on.] Nothing puts me at ease like being surrounded by machines in a prison that's being overseen by more intelligent machines.

Yeah. If it helps any, we've seen the engineers. I think the robots and wardens are the lowest in the chain of whatever command is going on.

That's... comforting. Do the engineers seem to be human? Organic, at least?

Organic. I'm pretty sure they're not human. I didn't see them myself, but from what I've heard one looks a little like a cross between a spider and a scorpion and the other was hooded so you couldn't see much of anything.

I suppose a spider-scorpion and a mystery in a hood are better than extremely advanced machines. [By the slimmest of margins.]

So... has anyone ever escaped?

No. Not yet. Considering the virtual reality aspect it's even more complicated than we though.

Are there ideas, at least, or do I need to make myself comfortable?

There are ideas, but you should probably get comfortable, because they're all long shots. Not that I'd blame you for being eager to get back.

["Eager" is such a strong word.]

You're pretty calm about being imprisoned. Is everyone this accepting?

I've been here for almost ten months. I had a lot of momentum for getting out those first six months or so and then it started tapering off.

The prospects are that bleak? Encouraging. [He writes something down.] Morale doesn't seem as low here as I'd expect it to be.

We're a couple of days away from the place being open for a full year and we don't have a lot to show for our efforts against it.

As far as morale goes... I think the part where there's always food and entertainment keeps a lot of people happy.

So our robot dictators want us to be too content to want to fight them. That could imply that they wouldn't be able to hold out against us if we rebelled.

That is the kind of optimistic thinking that sounds completely logical and will probably get you disappointed. [But he's thought the same thing.]

You don't think it could be true? There are a lot of ways to fight. Maybe no one's found the right way.

I wouldn't still be at it if I didn't think there was a chance. I just know it's rough when you think you'll be here hours or days and it turns into months.

[Thanks for reminding him that he could be here for months, Sam.]

What happens at home in the days or months where we're not there?

The thing we've all heard? Another version of you is there to do what you'd do, but without breaking any laws.

[No.]

I don't suppose you've heard where that version comes from or what happens to us if it gets killed, have you?

I don't. I assume it came from a warden originally. If it is true mine's already died a few times.
