[ Deciding that makeup will probably draw more attention than the bruise itself, a freshly punched Reid hits the prison streets. He needs coffee and a bagel, so he stops by Bean Crushers, lingering in a corner booth for a while with a stack of books that are due at the library. While in Sector 2 he also takes a moment to stop by the school - he hasn't held classes in forever and he probably won't now that his teacher's aide is missing in action but he can stop by the music room and play piano for a bit. It's been weeks, if not months.

He can, of course, also be encountered on the way between places, sporting a beautiful and fresh shiner. Thanks Leia. ]

Wanting to protect people is what I do. It's who I am. It's not meant as an insult, Reid. It just means I care. [But she's had time to reflect on that from their history and she does get why it bothers him and how she has treated him differently at times. She meets his eyes.] I'm sorry for the things I've done that made you feel like you couldn't protect yourself.

And I'm sorry I didn't call afterward, but I wasn't ready to talk to you about it. [Just saying this as clearly as she can here. She has feelings too.]

I didn't know that it was slave related. Probably should have guessed from the leash. [Softer] And I really never thought about it being another person. [Of course she was still "just fictional" in Reid's world at that point. It's not like Leia had been to the dome or Kitty would have any way of knowing about her except for vague coaxing from Rebecca.]

We're friends - if she ever forgives me for this. You're the profiler. [But she's pretty sure you don't react like that unless you're feeling betrayed and why feel that if you didn't care? It's a weird thing for them to talk about though so she won't push it further.

She looks at him again, not wanting this to set their progress back. After all, the one thing she wanted more than anything before she felt a suitcase full of bad, conflicting feelings over Leia was just to have him back in her life at all. They can't get anywhere without that and they—she—might find out that really is all she wants anymore.]

[ It's a frustrating situation to be in. He wishes he could find his way back to what their friendship used to be but back in the day, before they got together, she wasn't nearly this overprotective or at least not perpetually so. There were times and he appreciated them and now he just feels like she doesn't think he's capable of walking down a set of stairs, let alone handle a punch to the face. It's insulting, quite frankly.

The thing with Leia complicates it even further. He had a nice time dancing with her, flirting with her, kissing her... but that was it. Maybe he hadn't been entirely clear about that with Leia but he did explain the situation and she seemed to understand that he's romantically fragile right now. Not ready for any kind of relationship. Just... enjoying the few moments he's allowed to feel something other than gutwrenching grief and loneliness. ]

You're wrong. [ So serious, he can't possibly be serious. ] You're not going to beat me.

[ He's coming. Maybe he's feeling self-destructive or just tired of being alone in the apartment. ]

[For awhile now she's been feeling like everything she does around him is wrong. It gets him angry or pushes him away when she wants anything but that. And she knows he's hurting and she doesn't know how to make it stop and it hurts to think she's making it worse. She trusts him more with his physical capabilities more now than she did at the beginning, but she also doesn't know what to be for him and how and protection is such a default state for her. Something that it feels like she shouldn't be able to mess up.

And yet... Her parents. Her students. Maybe not the best track record even if there's nothing she could have done to save them.

She wishes she could explain more and maybe he could see where she's coming from and cut her a little slack. And she could find out more about how he's doing and know better what he needs from her. It just seems like she's on egg shells when they talk. Like she's always apologizing and waiting to be let out of the dog house.

She can't be angry at him, so she directs it inward and makes things harder on herself. And things were already pretty hard.

There's some relief at his joke though. Maybe they didn't take one step forward just to move two back this time. Maybe they held some ground.]

I don't know. I'm pretty good. It's not like you're from Vegas or anything.
