[Early in the morning, Yen glances at the communicator before turning away again. It feels too strange to look at the thing before she even has anyone responding. Her long feline ears remain oriented toward it for a split moment longer than her eyes.]

[She is clearly in the art center, sitting at a table. On one side, a pile of sticks strong-looking sticks. On the other, a pile of rocks. Some of the sticks have the rocks wound onto the end, done inexpertly but patiently. It is clear that she has been at this for a while.]

[Yen is tapping the head of one of these "wands" rhythmically against her cheek as she surveys her work.]

Soooooooo. There's that fancy slice of wilderness beyond the 6th gate—I'm yearning to explore it, but I find myself short on. Well.

[Yen throws her hands up (along with the "wand") at the assorted mess of sticks and rocks around her. Her eyes widen.]

A focus!

[Without even bothering to explain what that is, she sighs in frustration as she shakes her head. There is a clear and brief effort to calm down, and then she's right back to venting again.]

Why is it that I can acquire a fancy console that will show me erotic moving-picture tales, yet I can't even find a basic elementally-aspected stone? This is absurd.

Can anyone inform me if there are such things beyond that gate? It matters little what element it focuses, though fire is most preferable. And what manner of favor you would require for the retrieval of one or two for me? As humiliating as it is for me to have to ask for such a favor, a bla- [Er.] A thaumaturge is naught but a glorified preacher without a proper wand or staff!

[To cap it all off, she treats everyone to a very lower-lip-driven pout.]

	Have you tried asking the wardens? [Shallan sat out of the way, wearing a dress that covers her from neck to floor, and the left sleeve covers her hand. [Yenyoji glances over at Shallan, her tail twitching slowly as she slowly comes down from her self-induced tizzy.]

I've considered it, certainly! I may yet resort to that.

[She glances down at her pile of what are essentially toy wands, then back to Shallan.]

But I can't help but harbor a slight... [She brings her fingers up and pinches them close so there's only a little space between.] ... hardly an ilm-sized bit...

... of absolute distrust of our wardens.

	From what I understand, they limit the thought processes involved in using our ah... special abilities. [Hey, she does notice you moving, and just.. keeps sketching.] I haven't tried using mine since I got back... no Stormlight to use, and the wardens are a bit roundabout about giving the items required for me to acquire said Stormlight. 	Ah! That's not too far afield from what I'm familiar with. Typically, one uses grimoires for such a thing in Eorzea. [Yenyoji's eyes drift from Shallan and fall onto Pattern. [Yenyoji goes stiff as she takes in this sight, barely hearing Shallan affirming him as her companion. She's reeling from being so caught off-guard.]

[Within her, her instinct and will to battle the darkness churns, but without any focus, she cannot channel her enormous magical will to send this "demon" away with her flames or her ice.]

[Still, the instinct to protect and fight is too well-honed within her by now, and can't be readily countered for polite company. Without her magic, she does the next best thing.]

[Yenyoji grabs a makeshift wand, jumps up, and smacks at Pattern with it.]

Voidsent, stand down!

[The swirling lines of the spren are unaffected by the wand, and in fact, he sinsk back down onto the table to disappear under the pile.] Your new friend is much like the Windrunner, quick to act.

Pattern, shh! She's trying to kill you, if you understand the concept.

Spren do not die, unless they are killed by their bonded.

[Shallan sighs and shakes her head.] He is harmless, really.

[Yenyoji tries to kick the table over, but it is—fortunately for the table and unfortunately for her foot—bolted down.]

[She hops back a bit and drops the ineffective wand, rubbing her toes. The tuft at the end of her lion tail is puffed in a very annoyed manner.]

Oof...! What good is a table if it cannot be flipped!

[She stands her ground again, though, back straight and acting as best as she can a barrier between Shallan and Pattern's general location. Yen looks over her shoulder, unsure of what to make of this situation. She isn't deaf to their conversation, but the words aren't making sense.]

Harmless?

[Yenyoji is already way ahead wearing a frown, so it just twitches indecisively as she tries to process everything. It's hard to not take her gaze off of Pattern, but if a spren is anything like, perhaps, a Carbuncle, it should be safe.]

[But she can't really dismiss the sense of unease just by taking a wild stab at what "spren" means.]

No. Not in any formal sense, at least.

[She sits back down, but this time facing Shallan. Her tail sways and she tries, briefly, to swallow down the serious feelings. They're too strong and too raw, though, so she lets it stay until it's smaller and can be packed up more neatly.]

I'm a- defender. A warrior of the people.

[Yenyoji hesitates, looking Shallan in the eyes. There's a hardness in her own where she evaluates the lady with the "Pattern" and the sketchbook. It's hard not to try to find herself, she who (with her companions) walks the darkness to protect the light.]

[At the same time, things are too different for her to try and shove everything into Eorzean rules. It's a tough thing to do, but she has long resisted the siren song of honesty, and she resists again in this moment.]

[Her face immediately lights up to hide the hardness.]

Ah! So Pattern is a Carbuncle.

	Certainly! They don't speak, but they've the advantage of being cute as a button, to the point where some arcanists treat them every bit as much a pet as a tool! [She makes a swooping gesture with her hands behind her head.] Long, long ears, and swooshing fluffy tail! Gemstone on their forehead, and warm black eyes.
