Day 315 [Voice / Action]
[Voice]
A very quick question, if you have a moment to answer: where is the best place to drink and socialize in Marina?

I'm disappointed in myself for being here for twenty-two days without asking for a definitive answer to this.

[Action]
[With Korra gone, an empty Starfleet apartment, and no well-established friends to speak of, Chekov has no idea what to do with himself. There aren't math-heavy projects or engineering conundrums to provide a distraction. There isn't even a star-filled night sky to look at and map and imagine traveling. There's nothing but ocean and a growing dysphoria that is equal parts restlessness, boredom, and loneliness.

A decent bar with decent alcohol and decent company would improve Chekov's mood immensely, even with the wardens' highly prohibitive rules concerning alcohol. Since he has not found such a thing yet, he goes about his day with an uncharacteristic sullenness.

He spends several unhappy hours patrolling sectors three, four, and five. He drops by the sports complex at the warden's suggestion and, when none of the offered programs catch his interest, elects to sit on the sidelines and scribble out impossible ideas in a notepad. (Maybe he will be given rehabilitation points for being in the general vicinity of today's activities?) Chekov is careful not to look too busy, however; he doesn't want to do anything to discourage other inmates from striking up a conversation.]

If you're asking if there's blood there, you'd be right. It's a vampire bar. Not that we have that many vampires left around here.

[Oops, now he's interested.]

But there are still some vampires here? I have met wizards and demon hunters and an angel, but never a vampire. [It occurs to him that meeting a vampire may not be a good thing.] ...I would hope that no vampires here are inclined to eat other inmates.

You must be new. [ New enough. ] For the record... you're talking to one now. A vampire.

In that case, I am pleased to meet you. Have you eaten anyone here?

You really don't know? [ Ah. Guess that news story died quicker than he thought. ] And yeah... I did my rounds of the buffet table.

Should I know? [Someone should have mentioned this vampires-who-eat-people thing when he arrived. That kind of news is important.] Was this recently? As much as I dislike judging others on their past actions, I dislike dying more.

Figured the big damn heroes wouldn't let that one go so quickly. [ Surprise surprise. ] Calm down. I'm not on the hunt anymore.

That is something that people usually have long memories for.

How do you eat, if you no longer hunt? You can subsist on blood provided at this bar?

Don't have much choice. Keeps me alive, but it's like eating boiled shoe leather for the rest of your life.

How unpleasant. And even worse, you have no one to talk to but beings you would like to eat. I don't envy you, sir.

.....Are you patronizing me? You better not be.

No, sir. I would never patronize anyone who might view humans as humans view cattle.

[The tonal differences between patronizing, sarcastic, and sincere tend to be exceptionally subtle when Chekov is talking. That could be any of them.]

So I have been told. [Survival instincts rather than modesty dissuade him from sharing exactly how smart he is.]

Thank you for answering my question.

[ Good boy. So unlike other geniuses in the dome. ]

Sure. I'd give you gory details but I've been led to believe people frown on that.

Gory details about being a vampire, or about bars? Both would be informative, I think.

Whichever you want, if you can handle it. They tend to go together.

A while? How long is a while, from a vampire's perspective?

From a human perspective... I've been around for a little over a century. Not all that long, if you ask another vampire, but plenty long if you ask me.

I think that I would be bored after a century, but maybe being a vampire is more exciting than being a human.

How many people have you killed in that time, if I may ask? Thousands? I know nothing about vampire physiology, but it seems that you must either metabolize blood slowly or learn to kill very discreetly.

Thousands, yeah. Not like I've kept count but that sounds about right. I prefer eating daily when I can, but it's not like it'll kill us to go without... and you learn to make it last, if you must.

You'd be surprised how long a person can survive without enough blood in their body.

I have never had an occasion to wonder how long someone can be expected to live after experiencing significant blood loss, so yes, I think that I would be surprised. [He's wondering right now! Such wondering is kind of uncomfortable, actually.]

Maybe this is a strange question, but is the taste alone the only thing to dislike about blood that you can drink at bars? Is there anything else that would make fresh blood more preferable?

It's straight from the tap, for one. I'd be lying if I said that the hunt doesn't sweeten the meal.
