Ah, you know how I like to feel special.

[She leans forward against the kiosk, chewing her lip.] I had a few questions. Since, y'know - Aidan and I got blue banned the other day.

What's the point of the bands, again? Refresh me.

So you can have sex. Were you trying to do something else with him?

No, no. I mean - the bands. What's the point of them?

You can monitor our lifesigns closer, right? But if we're all sitting in pods right now hooked up to a shared computer program - what's the point? More so, why did you even bother with the sterilization bit? For theatrics?

[There is actually an extended pause before an answer comes.] Your rehabilitation is one of our most important concerns. Restricting certain behaviors is in your best interests for overall health and well being. In some cases those restrictions are somewhat symbolic and given tangible form to promote a realistic experience.

[She actually snorts, but raises her brows.] Uhuh.

So am I or am I not 'sterilized', Veri? Was that symbolic too, in the form of an unnecessary medical procedure?

Your physical body has not been sterilized. However, you will be unable to become pregnant within this prison.

[No, VR babies for you.]

That makes sense to me. I just don't understand all these arbitrary rules around sex if we're not even technically having it. It's all a simulation.

I give you points for being more open minded then say Acumen, but sex isn't a bad thing. I just personally don't get the concept of restricting it past the charade of this being a real place. But you just said yourself I'm not at risk of getting pregnant, yet you totally punished me for sex without a band with another inmate who previously I had done your little tap dance of rule abiding with.

The rules are not arbitrary. They have been developed for your rehabilitation. There are restrictions on many activities that can pose harm or potentially lead to abuse like the consumption of alcohol and drugs. We also allow a certain amount of usage and participation in such consumables and activities for both the positive qualities they can bring and to give you the opportunity to show your personal growth or lack there of by doing so responsibly.

You were punished because you broke an existing rule. The rules don't only apply if you agree with them or understand them.

But what was the rule? No sex because I could reproduce, right? But I can't. And even if I could, I'd already agreed to your sterilization at that point - [she scoffs] so it wouldn't have worked out that way either. I understand I said fuck the rules in that situation, but the rules - and this entire place were misleading.

And just how is sex on the same tier as alcohol and drugs? It's not going to damage your liver or screw with your brain functions. Again not that it can here, either, but I digress. Sex is about positive connections, relationships or simple release that can be beneficial to both parties. You're barring people from something in their nature because you think it can lead to 'abuse'?

What, are you afraid we're just gonna fuck like rabbits all day and every day? [Jeez.] You may be an AI but don't make the assumptions that the right to sex is going to turn us all into sex addicts at the drop of a hat.

You are only partially correct in your abbreviated version of the the rule as you were capable of retaining it.

This facility has two primary reasons for limiting your access to carnal activities. The first is procreation: this is absolutely forbidden. Criminals may not create innocent civilians with lifetime prison sentences.

The second is that this facility seeks to help you foster healthy relationships as part of your rehabilitation. We understand those acts are a part of the way organic lifeforms frequently pair bond, however we feel unrestricted access to the act is more harmful than beneficial to these goals. For this reason, pairings seeking to enter into a full range of sexual relationships must receive a license from this facility. You may also request a red band monitor for activities that require less commitment or simply see to your personal urges privately. All monitors required for engaging in sexual activities with a partner are readily available on request and as such there are no excuses in engaging in sexual relations illegally.

These rules include consensual and non-consensual sex.

Even if you find that some of the reasons presented behind the rules were given as a means of presenting you with a more realistic environment it does not invalidate the rules themselves. You are expected to obey all existing rules and if you do not there will be consequences. I can say it a few more times while juggling if that will help you understand that point.

Sex can be about many things and we do not dispute that some of those attributes are positive. However, it is our belief that not all connections are positive. It can lead to abuse, jealousy and self esteem issues. Sexual sadism can result in great bodily harm and death. There are also some potential medical concerns with sexually-transmitted diseases, yeast infections, tearing, etc. You understand these are just a few examples of course. Many, if not all, of which you are likely already perfectly aware of and ignoring because you are trying to make a point without making it.

Is there something you actually want?

If I got an STD in your coded world, I'd consider that bad programming on behalf of your creator, Veri. [She tips her head to the side and clicks her tongue.]

There are ways to work around negative issues surrounding sex rather than block the act off entirely. Obeying the rules and the reasons the rules there are two separate things right now and let's just split them up. Okay, I get it - I broke your rules, that's a different argument all together. Let's toss that out the window. But the reason your rules are there in the first place? That's getting flimsier and flimsier since the reason they were there - for us to believe in the realism of this dome? That's starting to shatter now that some of us understand and realize we're not actually conscious right now. We're in a goddamn computer program, Veri.

You want to promote rehabilitation. Why? Why is this so important, when in the grand scheme of things - our sentences won't end? It's a good and great thing to work towards, versus being asshole inmates, I'll give you that. But are you ever going to let us out? If not, why do you really, honestly care who we're boning or how often - or with how many people we're doing it? This is different than getting drunk or high, those are proven to be negative influences in and outside of simulated worlds. [Drier, because she really got irked by that comparison.]

If someone's too self conscious or jealous about another inmate's sexlife, that means they're not a good match for one another. And that's up to the people having sex together to figure out and deal with and manage on their own. I'd say letting people do that themselves is more rehabilitating when it comes to interpersonal relationships than barring them from them entirely, making people pretty much get married and swear fidelity to one another in order to dip their sticks. What if they're not a good match? They have to break up and do it all over again versus just working things out on their own. Sex isn't - forever. Not everyone bonds together forever.

Sexual sadism is also up to people to look out for, same with assault and injury - those are crimes and can be dealt with accordingly. That can happen in any relationship, regardless, it's not something you blanket over us saying you're protecting us from it when really you're just making excuses to keep your rules in check.

I want you to look at your sex band policies and any possible revisions that might be made in the future. Fair?

Sterilization process and the restriction of partners.

I can understand the need to have a process to evaluate inmates and their suitability, maybe in the wake of their records in and outside of the dome but perhaps you could consider it a one step process - if you'll take a suggestion. That the bands enable you to have sex with other banded inmates, or something to that effect. You could still restrict sex for unbanded inmates at your discretion.
