[VIDEO]
[It's well into evening by the time Chekov, confident that he has a solid understanding of this new prison, makes use of the communication device that he was issued upon arrival. The nineteen year-old bears a striking resemblance to a current inmate. His posture is significantly better, he looks far healthier, and he has a ridiculous accent, but there may still be confusion.]

This is Lieutenant Pavel Andreievich Chekov of the starship Enterprise. I would ask anyone who is affiliated with Starfleet to respond to this message, please.

[Not the most subtle of hails, but he doesn't want to risk missing fellow officers by taking a stealthier approach. Why put effort into being subtle, anyway? Isolated prison universes are very different from, say, alien planets; Starfleet's rules regarding contact with new lifeforms hardly apply.

Business out of the way, the Russian abandons the careful diction and formal tone for something warmer and more personable.]

Is there anyone who is interested in speaking with me? I find foreign universes very lonely and boring when everyone is still a stranger.

[ACTION]
[Chekov spends the day investigating sectors one, two, and three, taking a special interest in the maintenance bots that are busy cleaning up after the storm. The food carts in sector one also capture his attention. As soon as he decides that it would be ridiculous for those in charge to poison those they wish to rehabilitate, he becomes intent on tasting everything that is both edible and unfamiliar. When imprisoned, it's always wise to take advantage of any hospitality offered.

He keeps the headset off as often as possible. It's an annoying contraption--not nearly as sleek and unobtrusive as devices at home with similar functions. Should anyone address him in a language that he doesn't understand, however, he's perfectly willing to put it back on, as is polite.]

[ she hasn't had a reason to yet and besides that, she's had a distinctly unpleasant piece of knowledge regarding one of her friends to keep under wraps. data's fate puts a damper on any kind of sharing. ]

Twenty-fourth. [ okay, color her both impressed and interested. ] What was the Nero incident?

[ she appreciates his openness and she will probably reward it with information about herself, like the fact that she's not fully human and she's an empath. her smile turns appreciative. ]

I am the counselor on board my current starship. I don't believe it is easy to overwhelm me or bypass my level of comfort.

[ so seriously, tell her aaaanything. she can handle it. ]

I thought so! I knew a Captain Janeway and a small part of her crew; they were from the latter half of the twenty-fourth century, and their uniforms were not unlike yours.

[He pauses, considering the best way to approach the Nero debacle.] A Romulan called Nero came back from the year 2387 to avenge the accidental destruction of his homeworld by destroying Federation planets. His incursion created a significantly different reality from the one that he left. This is mostly according to Ambassador Spock, who was also from that time, came as well.

[That's skipping over a lot, like the deaths of hundreds of classmates and six billion Vulcans... to say nothing of everything that happened with Khan. All of that can be shared later.]

I believe that you--and everyone else I have met from a time after my own--are from the same universe as Ambassador Spock, or at least one that bears more similarities to it than to mine. [He smiles.] Although I know very little about the specific differences between universes, other than what Nero directly affected. The version [wersion] of me that was--or still is, I hope that he might be alive still in your time--in your universe must not look like me, because everyone is slow to believe that I am Pavel Chekov.

You knew-- [ there's a definite pause there. she'd almost given that away. kathryn janeway is an admiral in deanna's time but chekov had called her captain. interesting. ] You knew Captain Janeway? Who else was with her?

[ she frowns as she listens to the rest. 2387 is not that far into the future for her at all. she takes in what he says carefully. if he's right, then the timeline he's from has already been altered enough that it might not matter what she tells him and if he's familiar with the crew of the voyager, there's no telling what they've told him already. ]

There is an Ambassador Spock in my time. [ and relations with the romulans are just now reaching a decent point, after shinzon. ugh. shinzon. ] I think this might be a conversation we should have in a more private location. We have an apartment in one of the other Sectors, where the past and present Starfleet officers have lived. You would be welcome to stay with us and there we can talk a little more freely.

[ humor her, chekov. she'll feel better. ]

Yes, I did. She was in the City with Commander Chakotay, Ensign Kim, and Lieutenant Torres--and Q, also, but he was not a member of her crew. [He hopes that he remembers everything correctly; it has been well over a year since he left the City.]

If you lead, I will follow. [Although he has no concerns about talking openly, he's willing to admit that he might be too blasé about information leakages in alternate dimensions.] I appreciate your invitation, but are you certain that I wouldn't be imposing?

Q was there?

[ excuse her incredulity, but q being anywhere never brings good things. she can't imagine what havoc he would have made. that she can ask about later, though. the other names she vaguely recognizes from passing reports, but she wasn't high enough up on the chain of command to get much more than the bare details of voyager's story after the starship returned to earth.

at his agreement, she turns to head for their apartment, giving him a warm smile as they walk. ] We like to keep our fellow Starfleet officers close by. Right now our numbers are small, but you would not be imposing even were they large.

Yes, and he was almost as unhappy about that as Captain Janeway was. They did not get along.

[Much to Chekov's dismay, as he rather liked everyone. He catches himself missing the Voyager crew and Q almost as much as he misses his own. On the bright side, there is a third crew in Marina and Deanna is very kind.]

Thank you. [And he is thankful for the offer of a place to stay, although it's strange having to rely on others for such things. In the City, he was usually the one trying to settle new arrivals.] How many of your crew have been here, if I might ask?

I can imagine so.

[ the idea of q being caught is... well, she has to admit it's a little amusing, but at the same time, if there's an entity capable of capturing and imprisoning a q, then that isn't good for any of them at all. ]

As far as I know... [ she has to think because some of them weren't around when she was. like geordi. ] Six, including myself. Seven of Nine was also here, but she was a member of Captain Janeway's crew. I am unaware of any others at this time.

[ she'll find out about morgan robbins and captain janeway in a day or so, thanks to the pods. ]

	I was never told about a Seven of Nine. [Janeway's crew wasn't ever terribly forthcoming about their backgrounds or their associates, but six crewmembers? That's quite a few people to lose. She was not Starfleet in the strictest sense, from what I could see. I did not know her personally, but others did. [ like data. there was also the one who looked like her mother. that was awkward. ] It has been difficult, but as Starfleet officers, we are nothing if not adaptable.

[ she offers a smile. ] I believe that is something you may know well, coming from a similar situation.

Having friends leave is not so hard as finding them again and realizing that you are no longer the person they expect you to be. [Even before he started hopping universes, Chekov was accustomed to leaving people behind and being left behind. The real difficulty in the City had arrived along with his crewmembers after he had had over a year away from them to change and grow. There had been a distance between them that was never overcome, even after the City.

But there's no sense in being melancholy about things that cannot be changed. He brightens.] As you said, though, Starfleet officers are adaptable. I think that we have an unfair advantage in prisons like this one.
