Day 293 - Video / Action
[VIDEO]
[It's well into evening by the time Chekov, confident that he has a solid understanding of this new prison, makes use of the communication device that he was issued upon arrival. The nineteen year-old bears a striking resemblance to a current inmate. His posture is significantly better, he looks far healthier, and he has a ridiculous accent, but there may still be confusion.]

This is Lieutenant Pavel Andreievich Chekov of the starship Enterprise. I would ask anyone who is affiliated with Starfleet to respond to this message, please.

[Not the most subtle of hails, but he doesn't want to risk missing fellow officers by taking a stealthier approach. Why put effort into being subtle, anyway? Isolated prison universes are very different from, say, alien planets; Starfleet's rules regarding contact with new lifeforms hardly apply.

Business out of the way, the Russian abandons the careful diction and formal tone for something warmer and more personable.]

Is there anyone who is interested in speaking with me? I find foreign universes very lonely and boring when everyone is still a stranger.

[ACTION]
[Chekov spends the day investigating sectors one, two, and three, taking a special interest in the maintenance bots that are busy cleaning up after the storm. The food carts in sector one also capture his attention. As soon as he decides that it would be ridiculous for those in charge to poison those they wish to rehabilitate, he becomes intent on tasting everything that is both edible and unfamiliar. When imprisoned, it's always wise to take advantage of any hospitality offered.

He keeps the headset off as often as possible. It's an annoying contraption--not nearly as sleek and unobtrusive as devices at home with similar functions. Should anyone address him in a language that he doesn't understand, however, he's perfectly willing to put it back on, as is polite.]

It is, yeah. I don't know, they're different-- it's hard to explain how. The Wardens aren't much like the Deities at all, either, I don't think.

I'm not sure I'd call it home, but we're getting used to it, I guess. Today would be April 1st-- I've been keeping count-- so it's been just a month, I guess.

They seem far less approachable. Perhaps they are friendlier than their initial message makes them seem?

Only a month. [He's almost used to these time travel shenanigans, but that's still... you know, one month instead of ten.] Not so long, and maybe next time you will find New York.

It depends what you're asking for, I guess. Some things they've been helpful about, others less so.

New York would be nice, as long as it's the right New York, at the right time. [He smiles, a little sadly.] It's not all bad. Todd and I were just trying to leave together, at least we managed that.

Are they very willing to return the belongings that they confiscated? There are things that I would like back.

You have been together for years, correct? [He doesn't specify what he means by together. He can't know the nature of their relationship, of course.] I'm glad that you have been able to stay with each other. Most people are not so fortunate in that way.

When I asked, they told me I needed to make progress in my rehabilitation. [Needless to say Neil doesn't think he needs to be rehabilitated.] I should try it again, it's been a while since I spoke to them about my books and everything.

[There was a time when he wouldn't have managed not to startle visibly at the potential implication there, but Neil has settled down considerably.]

We knew each other at home. Not for as long as in the City, but. [He shrugs, with a small smile.] I'm glad, too. I'd be a lot more upset if it was just me, here.

Rehabilitation, yes. I don't fully understand what they hope to accomplish when few, if any, of us are criminals.

I was not in the City for as long as you, but I knew the friends that I made there longer than most of those I had at home. In a way, I'm pleased to be someplace like that again.

I have no idea. At least the Deities were... well, they never said why, that seems more honest somehow.

I kind of like that, too-- and I'll admit the chance that people from there might find there way here to visit is nice, though I wouldn't want anyone to get stuck here who'd rather not stay. It hasn't been so bad.

[The worst of it is that he's homesick, after all. That's not the Asylum's fault.]

It was difficult for them to lie because they provided no information. I liked that about them.

Is there anything to be concerned about here that is not mentioned in the information provided by the wardens? Weather-related malfunctions aside, of course.

I won't defend the Deities but I have to admit they were pretty fair, every time I dealt with them.

Coming from the City? I can't think of anything you wouldn't be able to handle. Nothing I've seen, anyway.

I would say the same.

[But the wardens? Jury's still out on them.]

This is reassuring, Neil--thank you.
