Day 293 - Video / Action
[VIDEO]
[It's well into evening by the time Chekov, confident that he has a solid understanding of this new prison, makes use of the communication device that he was issued upon arrival. The nineteen year-old bears a striking resemblance to a current inmate. His posture is significantly better, he looks far healthier, and he has a ridiculous accent, but there may still be confusion.]

This is Lieutenant Pavel Andreievich Chekov of the starship Enterprise. I would ask anyone who is affiliated with Starfleet to respond to this message, please.

[Not the most subtle of hails, but he doesn't want to risk missing fellow officers by taking a stealthier approach. Why put effort into being subtle, anyway? Isolated prison universes are very different from, say, alien planets; Starfleet's rules regarding contact with new lifeforms hardly apply.

Business out of the way, the Russian abandons the careful diction and formal tone for something warmer and more personable.]

Is there anyone who is interested in speaking with me? I find foreign universes very lonely and boring when everyone is still a stranger.

[ACTION]
[Chekov spends the day investigating sectors one, two, and three, taking a special interest in the maintenance bots that are busy cleaning up after the storm. The food carts in sector one also capture his attention. As soon as he decides that it would be ridiculous for those in charge to poison those they wish to rehabilitate, he becomes intent on tasting everything that is both edible and unfamiliar. When imprisoned, it's always wise to take advantage of any hospitality offered.

He keeps the headset off as often as possible. It's an annoying contraption--not nearly as sleek and unobtrusive as devices at home with similar functions. Should anyone address him in a language that he doesn't understand, however, he's perfectly willing to put it back on, as is polite.]

My sympathy to him.

I'm pleased to meet you as well, Euphemia, and I promise that I have given more awkward greetings than that myself. Have you been here for long? Long enough to establish a school, I understand, but maybe that can be done quickly.

He's very handsome. [Is she accidentally flirting with a third man? Oh, but he heard her announcement it seems, so she looks down for a moment, feeling self conscious.]

Ah, yes it's been some time. I arrived Day 32. [It was a little more complicated than that, but she doesn't go into it.]

He is fortunate that you think so. [There might be mutual flirting. There will not, however, be questions about personal things that Chekov doesn't think he ought to ask about.]

Then you must be knowledgeable about this place. For a prison that is overseen by artificial intelligences and recovering from environmental irregularities, it seems pleasant. [Too pleasant.] What have I missed? Are there curses? Ritual sacrifices to be made?

Curses and...ah, you're teasing. [Right?] No, nothing like that. There are odd occurrences like the weather yesterday. Ah, and some that are much odder still, but most days are nice. There are many activities and places to enjoy.

I'm teasing partly. I have been somewhere like this before, and curses were real there.

Ah--but I was teasing you about the sacrifices. Curses are reasonable, but sacrifices are ridiculous.

Oh, but we have sacrifices every day that ends in a 3. [She manages to sound serious.]

Now you are teasing. [If she isn't, he doesn't want to know.] What activities are there in a city underwater?

It sounds like you've already heard a little about the school, but there's also baseball. I cheerlead for the teams. So, that means there's cheerleading too. And there's the defense force, but that's not exactly a social activity. People keep starting book clubs. I'm not sure if there is one now though.

Baseball... which game is that? I have heard of it, but I've not seen it played.

May I also ask what the defense force defends against?

It's played with bases and bats. Oh, and a ball of course. I'm not sure I could explain it very well, but practice is held regularly if you wanted to watch or join.

[She nods.] Anything I suppose. Like yesterday when the environmental systems were acting up and it was dangerous almost everywhere, they were out trying to help people get to the safe shelters.

Do all of these things accept new members? Are there qualifications that must be met?

Please, tell me if I ask too many questions. I would rather not annoy you.

I don't think there are any qualifications for baseball, but I've heard there is an interview for the defense force. You can also take classes at any time, though if you want to teach you'd speak to me first.

You seem young to oversee a university, Euphemia, if I may say so. You must be very intelligent.

Then I would have seemed very, very young to you when I oversaw a country. Unless you think the university is harder.

[She smiles a little at the presumed compliment, but doesn't really internalize it.]

I wouldn't underestimate the difficulty of educating others, but yes, you are likely right. [He's very impressed. It may be difficult to tell since "impressed" appears to be his default setting.] In what capacity did you operate?

I was the sub-viceroy of Japan. Though I might have embellished my role by saying I oversaw it. I was only there a short time and my sister was viceroy and much more involved. I was to do things like choosing winning artwork. [And even there she was being pressured into making a particular choice by those who were to advise her.]

I have known very few people who serve aboard starships. Is it what it sounds like? A ship for outer space?

Yes! Not like an old sailing ship [which he only points out because some people, he has found, have gross misconceptions about space travel] so much as a small, self-contained city. Does your world have anything similar?

I've been in an airship before, but it didn't go so high as that. As far as I know we never explored beyond Earth. [So much conquering to do there.]

[Everywhere beyond Earth is happy to avoid being conquered!]

By what means did your airships fly? Hydrogen or helium gas? Or were they thermal airships?

It uses a float system. I'm afraid I don't know much about it. I think it works with electromagnetism.

An electromagnetic float system on a scale that large is very advanced. Your people may make it into space within your lifetime... that will be something to look forward to.

Perhaps so. I don't think something like that has been the priority. [There are still empires to conquer before taking over the whole world.]
