day 291 » open / closed action
[ open ]

Dexter is out today, looking for a few basic items he needs for his class - some basic chemicals, such as your standard household hydrogen peroxide, the things he needs to mix his fake blood, that sort of thing.

As he's out, he's also observing those around him. It's never particularly overt, but he's always attentive to his surroundings and people near him. He takes note of their behavior and mannerisms as he does and, when they look at him, he provides his own well-rehearsed pleasant smile in response.

It's still holding together - for the time being, the game he and 'Rudy' are engaged in is providing enough to satisfy some of his predatory inclinations, the hunt, the investigation. Of course, there's no payoff to be had here, and that leaves him still a bit on edge.

[ closed ]

Eventually, he gets back to the apartment and sits himself down with his supplies. Before anything else, there is one particular task to be seen to - setting up a blood slide. It's about time his class gets some hands-on laboratory time and learns what samples look like. Of course, since he can't sate his usual methods here, he's not taking someone else's blood. That leaves him carefully taking a drop of his own... from his arm with an appropriate needle, as opposed to the usual slash down the cheek. Flattening it into place, of course, is where he stops to reflect on it.

And there I am. Pressed onto the glass like so many before me, so many who were just like me. And just like me, they've found themselves at the bottom of the sea. And why shouldn't I be here? I'm just like them, a monster that simply had the advantage of a guiding hand to survive.

At least I have the good fortune of being intact.

It's a strange new day to wake up to and despite taking time to pull himself together, Spike is feeling almost uncharacteristically dazed today. The demon rages on as ever, demanding and craving and scratching, stripping him of every ounce of tentative control he had the day before — but it's not lasting. Not today. It's not as overwhelming, as consuming as it was and that is why he's ventured out, still looking like shit warmed over but with a strange, still purpose to his gait.

Lingering in the food section, he turns over a bag of blood in his hand. Fake, with real B+ flavor. Contemplates, or perhaps gathers up his strength.

This is certainly of interest - he's intellectually aware of vampires here, he's seen them in passing, but stumbling across one presently occupied in the actual process of examining food is quite another matter altogether. Particularly when it's the one who's caused such a stir recently. He does pay no small amount of attention to those sorts of goings-on, even if he's not on the Defense Force himself.

He approaches quietly, carefully keeping his posture relaxed and non-aggressive, and stops a few paces away. When he speaks, it's soft and conversational. Curious. He's never been much of one to fear for his life, anyway.

"How does the fake stuff compare?"

Spike looks up from the blood bag at the sound of incoming conversation, brows furrowing a little as he looks the guy over. He's seen him around, but not much more than that. Just some bloke like all the others in this underwater prison.

"Like drinking piss." He holds up the bag, wriggling it enticingly. "You can always give it a try. See for yourself."

"Well, with a recommendation like that, it's not exactly a compelling proposition."

Drinking piss honestly doesn't sound great, valid survival tactic though it may be. But he's still curious, certainly, as he would be with most anything related to blood.

"I wouldn't have much of a basis for comparison anyway, at least not for flavor."

There may be a slight exaggeration as far as flavor goes, but it's honestly not that far off. Certainly doesn't compare to the real thing but at least this he might be allowed to keep down.

"No basis for comparison?" He raises a brow at that, incredulously. "And here I thought the place was swarming with hot-blooded Happy Meals on legs."

He arches his brows there, and shrugs. His interest, of course, is pure fascination with the approximation of real blood, rather than nutritional.

"Not in line with my dietary requirements."

"Dietary requirements." Spike scoffs, rolling his eyes. He may not be the bloodthirsty villain he once was, but very little seems to be changed about his personality.

"You can eat roadkill, but you can't drink blood? I'll never understand why you humans are so picky."

"In fairness, I have no intention of eating roadkill, either." There's a small smirk there, since he's not really given to be bothered by scoffing.

"Though it probably has something to do with potential pathogens, you know, biohazards and all. Most of the blood I come across probably isn't quite food-grade anyway."

"Another thing you don't have to worry about when you're dead." Honestly, why do so many see vampirism as a negative? It's pretty great, no matter how you look at it.

"You've got plenty of food-grade blood here. Nothing keeping you from trying it."

Sure, sounds fantastic. Really. "Nothing like being dead already to take the risk out of life, huh?"

He gives a light shrug, "Hardly a personal judgement, but I still think I'll take a pass. My curiosity is really based more along the lines of the viscosity, whether it clots, the way it dries, generally the manner in which it behaves. That, and the chemical composition."

Living with Dexter has never been particularly difficult for Brian, but since things have come to light it’s been a little easier, he thinks, on both of them. There are still a few secrets up in the air, but there’s no pressure to pretend they’re anything approaching normal. It’s refreshing, actually. Brian has always enjoyed that game-- he likes how easily most people buy his lies-- but this is different. He has never had many kindred spirits, and he hasn’t really had a brother in… well, long enough that his brother has forgotten him.

It’s why he feels comfortable enough to crack a joke, when he walks in on Dexter prepping a slide. He raises an eyebrow, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.

“Having fun without me?”

For shame, bro.

It is surprisingly comfortable, having someone around who you know is in on some of your secrets, the darkest ones that you can't possibly let anyone in your life in on. Dexter has never had the emotional presence to consider himself lonely, but having someone who knows what you are, at least in some small part, who is damaged in their own way just like you, is an experience with some... feeling attached to it.

There's still so much between them that's unknown, so many details he hasn't filled in, but this small truth has given them a connection. Which is why he smirks at the other man's comment.

"Unfortunately not."

Then he holds up the slide and arches his brows, slightly pursing his lips.

"Ironic lesson planning."

“Hmn.”

Not quite a laugh, but it’s close; warm and obviously amused. If you can’t joke about gruesome murders and thoughtlessly invading the privacy of someone’s little rosewood box of souvenirs, what can you joke about?

“Good, I was about to be disappointed.”

And with his usual casual disregard for personal space-- the truth is he doesn’t even conceive of it as potentially rude-- he pushes off the wall and leans in to take a closer look at Dexter’s work. Hey, it’s kind of interesting; he usually doesn’t see evidence from this side, after all. Brian’s more competent at covering his tracks than the average person, but a little refresher course never hurt anyone.

"Well, I wouldn't want to get myself scolded by the robots, now would I?"

Of course, no matter how startlingly comfortable Dexter may find himself with anyone, he's always valued his personal space. This is one point on which they'll just have to continually disagree. At least he can tolerate it under the circumstances, to let Rudy take a look at the forensic paraphernalia he's setting up. He barely even tenses as he leans back in his chair a bit.

"The slide will serve its manufacturer intended purpose. Whichever manufacturer it is that supplies interdimensional underwater prisons."

Yet more reasons to doubt the reality of this place.

"They'd probably make you paint a mural or something,"

he says absently, picking up a blank slide to look at it, careful to hold it by the sides and not smudge fingerprints all over it.

"I'm impressed you were able to scare all this up."

"Bad idea on their part."

Whether it's because he lacks any real artistic inclination or because the wall would end up with what certainly looks like blood spatter, who knows. He gives a small nod, though, at the things he's assembled.

"There's a certain amount of lab equipment in the education center. And a lot you can accomplish with fairly standard items."

It gets one of Brian's rare half-smiles, fleeting but surprisingly genuine.

"Resourceful," he says, not surprised by that. Dexter's always been clever.

"Are you going to make everyone prep their own? I'm not big on the idea, I've gotta say."

He has no intention ending up in that box. It's a little joke, a little goad. He's not seriously worried; Dexter enjoys the game as much as he does, he can tell.

Oh, don't worry, Brian. You won't.

"No. Just using my own sample to let everyone have a look through the microscope. The other slides will have samples of hair and skin. Enough for someone to get an idea of what basic evidence looks like under close examination."

Carol makes it her mission to get out at least once a day, to talk to at least one person - though she usually makes conversation with more. She wants to know every sector backward and forward (Sector 6 is going to be the hardest, she knows). She wants to know every face and name. Some faces have become familiar.

But there are still many that are new. Like this one. She has her own smile, warm and open and welcome, and very genuine.

Warm, open, genuine - these are traits that Dexter strives to emulate, as a vital part of surviving among others, so he knows them when he sees them in others. He knows that these are the people he should speak to, the ones it's good to earn the trust of.

So when she smiles back, he speaks up with light but deadpan levity. "Lovely simulated day, isn't it?"

Her smile grows. She had been acknowledged and given an opening. Her course changes. He now has her full attention.

"It is. Just like every other since I've arrived here." She extends a hand. "We haven't met. I'm Carol."

He nods, drawing his own hand back and crossing it over his other arm, loosely. He doesn't pause to count or consider, he knows just how long he's been here. He's been counting days.

"Fifty days today, which... seems to be considerable enough around here."
