Mid-day

[It has been a week. Well, eight days. Carol drew up a little calendar that she keeps hanging her kitchen. No months, no year. After talking to some others, she realized it might not be relevent. So she just marks the days. Maybe it's pointless, maybe she'll tire of it after a while, but for now it helps.

Today, Carol can be found in the museum, smiling fondly, sometimes stupidly, sometimes laughing, at cats wearing clothes.]

...and then...

[Inspired, Carol finds herself at the Pet Cafe, staring down a huddle of kittens and wondering how she can leave with just one.]

[At first, she thinks World War II, but then she remembers he said he was from 1920.] World War I. We had that too.

Luckily I didn't have to join in the fry. [To his lack of being found.]

But I have heard that it was hell for those that fought.

It was. Unfortunately, I didn't learn much about it in school. It tends to be glossed over in favor of the the second World War. I'm afraid the memory of all of those conflicts will be lost now.

There is going to be another one? [ Most from his time would be freaked, the horrors of that war is still fresh.

But then Carol says that last bit.]

Why would they be lost?

[She nods sadly. Maybe it was not a good idea to tell someone from the past about a major future event, but with so many people from so many different worlds and timelines, people were bound to find out anyway. Besides, she had a look through the library.]

Most of the people on my world have been wiped out. Those of us who are left are just surviving. We're already forgetting what we were before the outbreak.

[ That's actually a lot sadder then he thought it would be and he is quite for a moment or two.]

What..What happened?

A ... disease. A virus? I'm not sure. Everyone has it. It's in everyone. Even me. [Even now? She's not sure if the overlords would have taken precautions against that, or how.] I'm not sure how far it spread. Communications went down so fast. I know North America was falling fast. That was the last I knew before we stopped getting any news, from the radio or TV.

It's dormant. You're safe while you're alive. But once you die, it ... activates. It wakes up some part of the brain and you come back. Not to life. You're not alive. You're a ... We call them walkers. They feed on the living. They roam tirelessly, seeking the living, so they can kill. If they bite you, and you survive, it's a sure bet you'll become one of them.

[ He listened in silence as she talked about it, what the world had turned into in her reality. It sounded very foreign yet very familiar.

That sounds like zombies,,,but zombies aren't something like that..[Not sure if he should go into the technicalities of it all.]

[They don't use the z-word back home. Walkers. Biters. Roamers. Anything but the z-word.

She nods her head with a bitter twist to her lips.]
Zombies. Yeah, I guess so.

But...But zombies aren't real, we make them, it's all trickery and illusions.

[She shakes her head sadly.] No. They are very real where I'm from. There are no tricks and illusions. They're a plague.

What do they look like?

Corpses. Rotting corpses. [She gives him a curious look.] What do you think they should look like?

Well... In my line of work we make it look like the person is dead, yes. But rotting...

[He looks into his hands, thinking.]

I guess we really do come from different worlds, huh?
