late day 276 | closed to data
[ a lot has happened lately, a lot of things distracting deanna, both good and bad. it's kept her mind of the hole she's been feeling, the emptiness that was once filled by someone very important. her anchor, her rock... she could no longer sense him. at first, she had thought he had merely spent a lot of time outside her limited range here, or that her empathic abilities had been one again dampened. but she soon realized that they were working with everyone else... just not with him.

and so she had thrown herself into her work, barely noticed much aside from trying to deal with nathan and his situation. today had marked another step with that as well and she found it all exhausting. it was god work, though, and she wanted to keep working with nathan. she wasn't yet willing to give up on him.

with all of those thoughts swirling around in her mind, it was little wonder that she was up this night, little wonder that she had a cup of tea brewing and was sitting at the kitchen table to wait for it. she was also staring at the table, as though it might hold the answers she needed, the comfort that she sought. living with two androids, she should have expected at least one of them to be up and about, to notice that she's still awake. but for once, she is too lost in thought.

she could use the distraction, though. ]

[ Data hasn't been utilizing his sleep program recently. There's too much going on for him not to make use of the fact that he doesn't require actual rest. With everything that's happened in the past several days, all the comings and goings and the various emotions associated with each of them, the business with the Defense Force has provided no shortage of ways he can keep himself occupied. Unfortunately, it's essentially impossible for an android to devote enough of his attention to anything in order to provide an effective distraction.

So of course he's up and about this late night to hear Deanna in the kitchen. He allows her a few moments to herself, though, before he appears in the doorway. ]

Counselor?

[ the tea's nearly steeped when she hears that voice. deanna looks up with a tired smile. it's always good to see him here, a pleasure and a gift she'd never thought she would have again. the same could be said of lal, though deanna hadn't known lal nearly as long as data. regardless, she's happy to see him, despite the circumstances. ]

I should have known you would be up at this hour. [ the whole not needing to sleep thing might come in handy, huh. ] Are you busy?

[ He gives a small, tight smile as he arches his brows. It's in concession; there is certainly a greater likelihood that he'd be up and about at any given hour than anyone else. ]

I am not notably occupied at the moment.

[ Of course he always keeps 'busy' to an extent, since he doesn't really do idle, but there is nothing he's so occupied by that he can't take a moment out for Deanna.

With considerable restraint, he holds himself back from asking after her own wakefulness at this hour. Conversational patterns would indicate that her inquiry after the state of his occupation is likely an opening to pursue further, purposeful conversation. ]

[ it's about then that deanna remembers her tea. it's probably done steeping by now. so she moves to finish that as she speaks again. ]

If I'm not keeping you from something, would you care to join me?

[ her smile as she settles back in her chair with tea cup in hand is still tired, but also warm and inviting. she would welcome his presence. it's hard being alone now and she would much rather have company for a while, at least until she can finally sleep. ]

[ He gives a small nod there, with a soft smile. ]

Of course. I would be happy to.

[ And he does, taking another seat at the table. It's been similarly difficult for him, at this point he's seen so many of their people come and go - from their own crew and beyond - while he's remained since the very first of them arrived. Even Lal's presence carries mixed emotions. But in the moment, he is primarily concerned for Deanna. ]

I am certain that you are fully aware of the current time, but I cannot help but feel that I would be remiss not to communicate the fact that I am concerned.

[ she'll say it later, but she has a feeling data knows that she appreciates the company. maybe tomorrow she'll go for a nice chocolate sundae to help make this a little more bearable. for right now, a good friend's presence and unbiased view and opinion are definitely what she needs.

she gives him that same tired sort of smile, but it's now tinged with sadness. normally, she might try to keep that to herself; with data, though, she feels it would be an insult to his concern and to their comrades to deny what is clearly there. ]

That's very kind of you, Data. [ she pauses to sort out the truth and what's easiest to say. ] I suppose I didn't want to be alone in that room right now. [ the time here without riker is the first since they've been married that she's slept alone. saying it's been difficult is an understatement. perhaps this time the counselor needs counseling. ]

[ It's safe to say that he's got a pretty solid idea. He gives a slow, considering nod. That Riker and Troi were together had neither escaped nor surprised him. Certainly they were from a more advanced chronological point than he, and the complexities of their relationship had not been beyond his notice in some time. ]

That is quite understandable. The abrupt and numerous departures have been quite... difficult.

[ Soft, sympathetic commiseration. As painful as it is, he's still grateful to be capable of this. ]

[ one doesn't need to be empathic to sense the sympathy and understanding in data's words and tone. he's lost seven twice now and deanna knows that has to be difficult. so she sits up a little straighter and leans over the table to examine data a little more. ]

It has been, hasn't it? How are you doing? I know it must be harder on you to see so many come and go like this.

[ she doesn't know exactly how long he's been here but she's pretty sure he's outlasted everyone by now. ]

[ Ninety-two days, the last of the first group to arrive from their world... but he gives a slight nod. ]

I believe I have been managing to retain an acceptable level of functionality. I have kept my chip active in an endeavour to actively process my emotional responses so that I may successfully integrate them and, in time, overcome the challenge that they pose.

[ that makes her smile just a little bit. she understands what it means to him to keep that chip active and she thinks it's a good idea. after all, the rest of them can't exactly turn theirs on and off when they want to. ]

I think that's a very good thing to do, Data. [ she pauses for a half second, watching him to see how he's doing. ] Would you like to talk about it? I know it isn't easy to deal with any of these emotions for any of us.

[ it's as much an offer to talk about her own feelings on the subject as it is for him. it's not easy for her, so she knows it must be doubly difficult for him. ]

[ He considers that, with a slight inclination of his head. It likely would help him, and he knows very well that she's going through much the same herself. ]

That could likely prove beneficial to assist in the processing of said emotional responses.

[ For both of them. That meaning is clearly there, and he's fairly confident it makes it across. ]

I have often had trouble reconciling my emotional and rational responses. It is disruptive to the timeline for us to be here and none of us would wish to be imprisoned, yet I have been happy to see all those who have arrived here in spite of that knowledge.

[ she nods, understanding his meaning entirely and grateful that he's willing to be there for her as she is for him. they're friends, above and beyond her role as counselor, and over the years they have taught each other numerous things. trust, loyalty, friendship... emotions. it's all there and it all plays a part now. ]

I think we all do sometimes, Data. I have enjoyed taking the time to get to know the others here, even those who are not from the Enterprise. [ like seven, for example. ] Like you, I know my duty is to Starfleet, but I can't help hoping that Commander Riker, for example, might arrive tomorrow. Or perhaps Captain Picard. Or Doctor Crusher, even though she has never been here to our knowledge.

[ she could seriously use beverly's friendship right about now. ]

I think that's a very human part of us [ says the half-betazoid to the android ], the part that doesn't want to be alone, and enjoys every moment we have with our friends.

[ He gives a nod there, understanding. ]

It has been difficult to accept that my emotional responses are not always in accordance with rational thought.

[ But there is a small, sad smile. It is human, isn't it? Hearing that always pleases him to an extent. ]

It is important to do so. Presently, I am grateful that, despite the disappearances, you are still here.

[ he really has come such a long way and she's so pleased and happy for him, also that she and his friends could be there along the way. his foray into humanity and everything he's had to learn has been... well, deanna knows she never would have viewed certain things the way he does or even come close without his insight while he's learned. he's opened her eyes while she's opened his.

and that is one reason she is not looking forward to returning to her own point in space-time. ]

They often aren't. Our emotions will make us feel one way when logically we know we should feel another way. It's a bit of a paradox and it takes time to unravel and work through. [ she shrugs a little, as though to suggest that some never do. ] Perhaps it's a work over an entire lifetime.

[ her smile matches his. it's a sad conversation, isn't it? ]

I know you should be back in your own time, but I would miss you a great deal if that were to happen while I was still here. I'm glad you're still here, too. Having a friend to speak with and go through these experiences with certainly helps ease the emotional responses.

Then it is an essential part of the human experience.

[ Though still sad, that gives a quirk to his smile. Gratitude for the challenge, for knowing what this feels like. For knowing what feeling at all feels like. ]

It does provide no small degree of comfort, to have a friend with whom to share a difficult experience. I am grateful that I am able to provide that as well.

[ they've all had to learn this at some point or another in their lives. data just has to learn it all faster than they did. ]

Unfortunately so. It does get a little less overwhelming over time, depending on the person, but that doesn't mean it's easy.

[ she manages a small, grateful smile at his last words. ]

You have always been a very good friend, Data. I am happy to call you one of mine. I would be remiss in my duties of counseling and friendship if I didn't ask if there are any of these emotions in particular that you'd like to discuss.

[ is there anything else she can help with, dealing with seven's second disappearance or any of the others, dealing with lal being here, or anything else? ]

[ He hesitates a moment before his brows arch and he gives a very slight shrug in contemplation. Then, he shakes his head. ]

I am not certain that I entirely know where to begin.

[ But he considers, for a moment, and furrows his brow - troubled because, of course, it is a troubling topic to broach. ]

Though, I have had particular concerns regarding Annika's wellbeing. She informed me that, immediately prior to her return to the facility, she had been in an extremely perilous situation which she did not expect to survive.

[ a frown crosses deanna's face. seven of nine wasn't a name that crossed her desk, as it were, so she can't be absolutely certain. ]

Do you know what it was? Did she tell you?

[ assuming he's comfortable enough to tell her that. it might help deanna figure out what to tell him. ]

She had been captured, along with Voyager's EMH. His ethical subroutines were removed, and he was being used in an attempt to forcibly extract information from her cortical array.

[ it doesn't sound particularly good and deanna can tell that he's worried about seven. who wouldn't be? what she wishes is that someone were here who could give him the reassurance he so obviously needs. she weighs her options for a few seconds. ]

While I don't know of Seven's fate in particular, I can tell you that... from what I have seen of her here, she has the strength and fortitude to make it through.

[ she does know that voyager makes it home and if seven happened to be on it, she's there now, too. deanna has no doubts that she's somewhere within starfleet's reach one way or another and whenever deanna manages to get back herself, she'll see if she can find out for sure. ]

I know it isn't much. [ but sometimes hope is all they have, especially here. ]
