day 267 | open video & action
[ Lal's never seen an actual ocean before. Or a blue sky, an underwater dome... Almost everything in MarinaNova is totally new to her. That is why her first transmission comes some time after she's arrived. As urgent as it is that she is returned to The Enterprise, there wasn't exactly anyone around curb her curiosity, or answer the multitude of questions she's storing up for later.

But now, she finally starts her video from the shoreline of sector one. For all intents and purposes, she seems to be an ordinary young woman. Except for the odd and slightly mechanical movements of her head.
]

Father.

[ She doubts he's actually here in the asylum with her, but she has to make sure. She pauses, cocking her head to one side just a bit. Being used to the starship's communication methods, she expects an immediate answer. When none comes, she continues on. ]

Asylum. Protection from danger. A facility where care is given to the sick or insane.

I am not sick. This is not The Enterprise. This is not Galor IV. I do not know of a planet with an ocean named "Saylar". Why... was I taken from The Enterprise? Why was I charged with crimes? Captain Picard stated that I had not done anything wrong. So why am I here?

It is a mistake. Since it is a mistake, I've concluded that the logical action would be to return to the surface of this planet. I will do that now.

[ Obviously, the best way to do that would be through the ocean. She hasn't yet realized that the water before her is independent of the dark sea outside the dome, so she's going to start marching forward purposefully. She'll keep going, eventually sinking below the surface unless she's stopped. ]

[ If he doesn't have an answer for how they came to be in MarinaNova, then there is no reason to dedicate further resources to that aspect of the problem. ]

Father, I wish to help the others go back to their homes. There are humans who do not want to stay here. Helping them is our function, correct?

[ The incline of his head that he gives in response is somewhat tentative. ]

It is, and securing means for all those present to go home as they wish is a goal toward which we are working.

[ His head tilts slightly, considering. ]

The first step to providing any assistance is to gather and analyze information. The inmate population is in a vulnerable position in the facility; we must be certain that we are well-prepared to take any action.

I will assist. I would be suited to the task of gathering and analyzing information.

[ Regardless of whether or not she would actually be useful at this stage, she is at least confident in her ability. ]

[ She may not be exceptionally effective, but it is a task that would allow her to develop those abilities - and there is no real reason to not allow her to try, his general concerns aside. ]

You can begin doing so with the knowledge with which I will provide you.

[ And as he continues to lead her, their journey will take them to the apartments in sector 2, where he will guide Lal into the building and to the quarters which the members of Starfleet present currently share. ]

For the duration of our stay in the facility, this serves as our home.

[ For once she's quiet. Satisfied that many of her questions will be answered with the transfer her father will provide, she focuses on their route instead. The processes recording it and plotting possible alternatives are given the highest priority... Until the two of them are inside. ]

It's different.

[ Not that she expected a replica of their quarters from the Enterprise, but she still hasn't gotten the selective verbalization thing down. Especially when distracted, which she currently is. She finally wanders away from his side, stopping to inspect anything that catches her attention. ]

Yes. It is.

[ He stays still as he watches her, allowing her the freedom to explore for the moment. As stable as currently appears, he cannot quite shed his concerns - though there is no reason to curtail her curiosity. Watching her explore her surroundings in this manner is just as enlightening an experience as it had initially been, only underscored by the bittersweet emotional responses he is currently processing. ]

As I had mentioned, we do not have access to the level of technology available on the Enterprise, nor are our living situations the same. The common areas of this apartment are shared with the other Starfleet personnel present, in order to enable us to more easily work together as we endeavour to understand the facility more thoroughly.

[ She takes his words in, only faintly grasping what inconveniences the difference in technology will mean for them. For her, as long as he is present the living conditions are completely acceptable, despite the change. The presence of other Enterprise crewmates is also a "comfort", as she believes she still has much to learn from all of them.

She finally turns to face her father again, satisfied with her visual assessment of the room, for the time being. When she speaks again, it's with a probably familiar and oddly forceful tone, marking her eagerness to learn and be of use.
]

Will we begin the transfer soon?

[ All of that will become clear soon enough; the equipment he and Seven have been relying on for necessary maintenance is acceptable, but it's rigged from what they could find. It suffices, but it's certainly not the lab on the Enterprise. He nods. ]

Yes. Before that, Lal, there is something which we should discuss. Regarding our temporal discrepancy.

[ He moves to take one of the seats in the common area, and nods toward another, indicating she should also sit. ]

[ Being so eager to learn all she can, in the fastest way possible, she pauses for just a moment. But, she does take the seat indicated, tilting her head slightly. ]

Is there a problem, Father?

No.

[ At the moment, he truthfully doesn't think that there is. Lal is here, functioning, talking to him and understanding - there is no sign of malfunction, and he'll confirm her stability along with the completion of the transfer. But this should come first. ]

However, there is a great deal that has happened during that time, and there are developments of which you should be made aware.

[ His head shifts, tilting to one side just a bit - so much like her movement, even if it's become a bit more understated. ]

You had inquired as to the reason behind my changing facial expressions; the answer is that they are an involuntary outward manifestation of emotional responses, which I am now capable of experiencing.

How?

[ A curt question. But, by her reasoning, if her father can experience emotion, that must mean it's possible for her too. Of course, she doesn't yet know the dangers, or how it's currently not likely that anyone could duplicate the process that made it possible. Still, thanks to his guidance, it is her ultimate goal as it was once his. ]

It would seem that reports of Doctor Soong's death had been erroneous. In the years since the destruction of Omicron Theta, he had worked to create a chip which would enable me to process basic human emotion.

[ He would certainly reason that to be her goal as well - one that is more than simply a challenge, given how emotion's unintended manifestation preceded her cascade failure. It doesn't even enter into whether it would be possible to replicate his father's work; even if he did, trying to incorporate it into her matrix would risk her loss, again. Even he had just barely managed to adapt to the chip. ]

[ So it wasn't the natural progression of his existing components. That's somewhat disappointing for her. But, there's still hope! Obviously, since she doesn't know about the cascade failure, there's no reason, in her mind, that she shouldn't get an emotion ship as well. ]

Will he create another chip? Can you create one, Father?

He will not - unfortunately, he died shortly after we were reunited.

[ And there is the direct query he had anticipated - and along with it, reminders of all the reasons that it's inadvisable, apprehension and uncertainty. Hardly his favorite of the emotional responses he can now process. ]

I do not believe that I yet possess the ability to replicate his work on my own chip.

[ There is sadness, as he knows that desire more than well, and the disappointment of being unable to help her attain that goal. Of failing her, and after her loss had been his failing already. He understands fully well how difficult it is to obtain and maintain the stability of a positronic matrix, knows that even his own father has seen numerous matrices fall into similar failure, but that does not change any individual failure. ]

[ There is very nearly evidence of disappointment on her face. While it is frustrating to have the immediate possibility snatched away, his prior teachings come to mind. If the struggle is the reward, then having human emotion is not something she must have right away. Regardless of how much she wants it. ]

Then... It is possible that you will someday posses the ability. And I may progress so that I can assist you.

[ Because what better father daughter activity is there? ]

[ He purses his lips and nods, expression fading to a wistful smile as he does so. ]

Perhaps, in time, that will be possible.

[ It may be unlikely - highly, to a degree he can't stop himself from processing - but there is no reason that he should rule anything out entirely before examining her neural net thoroughly. The fact that she is here and functioning at all is already proof that he should not dismiss anything outright. ]

With that development in mind - I wish that it were possible for me to explain how happy I am to see you, Lal.
