Hello, everyone!

[Behold, a wild Neil appears! Looking vaguely bemused, but all in all cheerful.]

It’s been ages since I had to introduce myself like this-- I’m out of practice. My name is Neil. I got here a few days ago, with my friend Todd. We came here from a place called the City, which was a little like this-- most of the people living there came from different worlds, or at least a lot of us did.

[He pauses, all too aware that this sounds a little nuts, but hey. It would've sounded crazier if they'd ended up in a proper self-contained universe, right?]

And things like yesterday-- with all those little furry things-- would happen every couple of days, too. Or other kinds of... Well, we called them curses, though I don't think you have anything exactly like it. But, I guess, we're used to strange things.

[And he smiles brightly.]

Anyway. I was speaking to the-- to one of the Wardens, yesterday morning, and she suggested I ought to get involved in some activities here.

[Because Neil wants his stuff back. His books, how is he supposed to get by without the few ones he packed?]

So I thought I'd introduce myself, and ask for some suggestions. Where should I start?

[Hey, he figures it's natural to be curious about it; it would have sounded unmaginable to him, too, once. This place is sort of a surprise to him; he wouldn't have thought there woulld be too many places like this, though he'd heard rumors now and then.]

I'm from Vermont, actually, but I did live in the City. It didn't have a real name, everyone just called it that.

	[ that answered that question - if he meant he was actually from the city. elena's silent a moment, processing this. a little shocked but not necessarily surprised at the notion there are other places like this. Well, it was big-- there were a lot more people than there are here-- and it was like this, there were people there brought in from all different times and places, all different worlds. Every few days something strange would happen, and that's what we called curses. We used to think the Deities made them-- the people in charge-- but really it seems more like the City made them, because even after the Deities left they happened. Sometimes people would turn into animals, or the City would flood and the streets would turn into canals, or it would rain candy-- almost anything you could imagine.

	I've wondered that a lot, and I still don't really know how to answer that. That's what everyone called them and what they called themselves, but were they really? They weren't the ones really in charge-- there were other beings, too, though we didn't see as much of them. But when you've been in a place like that... I'm not sure how you define a god, really. I guess you're right. Being here makes you wonder. [ elena was never religious; now she's consider herself atheist, if anything. or agnostic, maybe, without much faith. she's curious about those other beings he mentions, but she'll offer some information first. ] We have the wardens here. I'm sure they've introduced themselves. [ so wry. she's not a fan. ] Apparently this place was made by some group called the Engineers? No one's ever seen or heard from them.

	I've met them, at least briefly. They're not very much like the Deities. [Or like Anonymous, he thinks. Really, it's probably for the best. It's been a long while since Neil worried about religion; certainly no one ever worshiped the Deities.] I hadn't heard about the Engineers, though. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Any place is what you make of it. The City became home, after a while. [Being dead, back in his proper world, has a lot to do with it of course; but it seems a little awkward to bring up, and honestly since no one's asked he's getting the feeling it's less usual here to show up deceased.] And I guess this will, too. [ less usual than he'd think. elena's dead, for one. quite literally, she's undead. so is rose, and damon; and rose actually died for good.

it unsettles elena to think, though, that this place could be home. a home without jeremy, her brother. without matt or caroline or stefan. the people she loves. at one point she had them all - even the people she'd already lost. for a moment she thought she could be happy here. but maybe he's right about that first part, at least: that marinanova is what you make of it. and hasn't she made it a second chance to live? make choices that she might not have back home, for herself? she can't regret those. she can't regret being honest with herself, if nothing else.

elena smiles. it's a small, sad gesture, but there's admiration in it too. ]

I hope so. [ and she does, for him. maybe not fully for herself just yet. ] You know, thanks, Neil. That helped me to hear.
